Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

It's hilarious, leaf fans knew he was junk and dead weight. Just a few days ago. Now they know he is the savior lol. Blues fans told him he was the guy they needed....guess they were right.

Yes he will resign with blues.
A ton of Leafs fans were happy with the move. He was the guy I've wanted the most as he allows us to either run 3 strong lines, or really stack the top 6 as Matthews, ROR and Tavares can all play LW if needed, and the Leafs biggest issue in the top 6 was LW. He's an amazing chess piece in that he now allows us to stack the top 6, or shift the top 3 lines depending on match-ups and needs for the opponent.

I mean, Leafs fans probably are the largest fanbase on this site. If you only pick out the negatives you might have some who will tell you the sky is pink and grass is yellow.

Haters gonna.... Where did they go?

Really liking the versatility this gives the Leafs. Should free up AM34 and Nylander more as well.

Man we look good.

Yeah, but it's the same subforum though. A month ago, 2/3rds of the Leafs fans replying fell into some category of: didn't want to trade their 1st, were referencing the +/- or points, comparing him to Nick Foligno, saying he was old and washed up, only any good on defense, etc. But now they come out of the woodwork to dunk on how amazing of a trade this is like they've been on the ROR bandwagon for longer than a week.

He's a beast come the playoffs, but the percentages of Leafs fans is wildly off between pre- and post-trade.

That's human nature. People will argue for and against an argument. What's your point ?

In respose to 1st + Knies demands for just O'Rielly without double retention sure. Paying our two top assets for a guy who hadn't come back from his injury yet and would eat up all of our available cap space would be a bad idea, why wouldn't people be against that. Having him play a few good games for the Blues, getting double retention and leaving space for an additional move, and getting Acciari with him without trading Knies is a different situation.

That's misrepresenting what I'm saying though. The ROR threads weren't people saying he was great but the ask was too high. Damaged goods, Nick Foligno, washed up, etc. Where was this cavalry of belief in him then? You know what I mean.

And that's human nature; people will point out hypocrisies. What's your point?
My point is that we don't know whether this trade will work out for Leafs. You will have fans argue both that O'Rielly is washed up and that he's exactly what Leafs need. The point is we don't know the truth until after the fact (playoffs). Still, some people will try to pretend to know the truth ahead of time.

I don't know that the Nick Foligno comparison was that insulting. ROR is obviously a better player overall but we got Foligno coming off a mild injury and it threw his timing off enough that he got seriously injured with us 3 games in. Now that he's healthy again he looks good with Boston, if we got the guy they're getting now and extended him I don't think anyone would complain about that trade. We just had the same thing with Muzzin where a back injury threw off his timing enough that he was suddenly a lot more vulnerable to regular hits hurting him way more than they should and likely ending his career.

ROR could be a good player while still being a risk to invest a lot in until you see him come back at 100% and able to play at his usual pace. It's fair that there's some level of guesswork of where he was going forward between his Conn Smythe self and whatever he was at the start of the year. The Conn Smythe guy you could actually get 1st + Knies for, start of the year ROR would get you a 2nd, he got somewhere in between and the crazies on both sides were wrong like usual.

Fans will always complain about the price paid for a “rental”.

Reading the Leafs home board (not the trade board) , I would say the “damaged goods, Foligno and washed up” comments are a vocal minority.

Which is completely different than what I was talking about.

I mean, there's always one or two posters in any fanbase that have ridiculously high/low asks. Which is why I'm more speaking to the stuff that was critical of him and not the return.

I agree with the first part of your post, but with the 2nd part that's why I prefaced it by saying just the same subforum.
