Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

You guys can flame away at me for the suggestion, as I know most everyone OUTside of STL hates him. However, if you got Dubas to convince Army to swap Binnington for Murray (and QUITE a sweetener), I would bet good money he’ll win you a cup. He’s been fantastic this year, the team in front of him has been hot garbage on the back check all year (except for the 3 games post Tarasenko trade). He’s from Toronto, and is just a different animal in the playoffs.

Only reason STL does it, is we want to hit rock bottom for that dude from North Vancouver.

Just looked at O'Reilly's stats for the season...

What in the actual f*** is Dubas doing giving up all those picks on an underperforming rental?

This reminds me of the Foligno trade from 2 years ago

Throw in an extra 1st, that's the kind of package that gets close to landing Meier - which is the type of player (entering his prime, not a pending UFA) the Leafs should've been targeting

In carreer foligno in playoff in a 82 game pace, its 12 goal, 32 pts

Ror 28 goal, 72 points.

If we removing their rookie season its 31 goal, 77 points For ror and 13 goal and 33 pts for foligno... its 233% over foligno production

In carreer foligno had 2 season over 55 points pace... last 12 years, its the first time this seqson than ror is under 55 pts pace

We just dont talk about the same quality of player...

O’Reilly missed 14 games this season with a broken foot. Broken bones tend to heal and that’s it. It’s not like a muscle injury that can linger. Kane‘s hip has been a nagging issue for about 3 years. So Kane’s hip is far more likely to pop up as an issue than O’Reilly’s foot.
That's not quite true. Broken bones don't just "heal and that's it". They will be weaker and might be less powerful for a long time. In figure skating for example, a person might have broken their foot and for the rest of their career, could never jump nearly as high as before. But of course, hockey might not have such specialized measurements for performance.

In either case, it's misleading to say that broken bones just heal and then are all fine.

If that's the only reason STL does it, then consider the realities of math and realize that even a 3-23 record the rest of the way would have the Blues holding the 4th pick before the lottery draw if other teams hold their paces. If they win the lottery they win the lottery but this trade will not produce enough losses by design to do what you hope.

I think this trade could potentially bring Toronto infinitely more playoff success. They might win a playoff series.

I know that, but all the same Kane isn't done yet and he had a hat trick last night.

It’s a lottery, it would enhance our odds quite a bit…

I’m well aware of the hat trick. And frankly, I’d have no objection to the Leafs getting Kane but I still think that Kane is more of an injury risk than O’Reilly. Heck, Auston Matthews is probably more of an injury risk than O’Reilly.

Yeah, ok. So do I.

The Blues have a 5% chance right now and if they finish 4th they would have a 9.5% chance. The difference is 4.5%. Now, it's almost mathematically impossible to gain that 4.5% to get all the way to 4th – as I pointed out already – but even if they managed to pull off a once-in-decades level collapse to get there it would decidedly not "enhance our odds quite a bit"

Three? Lucky if they make 2 from those picks, it will take till 2025 but we went all in and replaced Kadri. Our prospect pool will suck for years but we won't have Mathews if we keep losing.
We get you like the deal for your team. Quit trying to tell yourself (let alone all of us) those picks won’t amount to anything. Last I checked the Blues are pretty damn good at drafting from the back of pack.

So Dubas HAS TO be fired if this doesnt work out

He has to be
He was fired if he didn't. It's showtime!

this is such a lazy take.

The leafs problems are not defensive personnel for the umpteenth time.
Knies has to be the missing piece upfront, now a physical defensive defman and pray for goaltending. I heard Schenn was too steep, he would barely make 6th def here .

Yes thomas was 20th parayko was 86th round. Kyrou 35th. Snuugerrund 23rd. Plenty more late picks that are nhl players

Exactly. And that's with posters around here suggesting the defense and goaltending is mediocre.

Leafs are top 5 defensively but it's not good D or goaltending, those both suck. The forwards are playing better defense... but also the big forwards suck defensively. So our bottom 6 must be responsible for that result.. except they suck as well.

Let's just all agree it's a fluke

lol.. So Binnington with a .893sv% @ 6AAV for another 4 years... And if we give a big sweetener, you will give us the priveldge of swapping him for the .911 goalie signed for 1 more year at 4.6.

How very generous of you. Dubas should do that right away

To be fair to that poster they said you’d be lucky to hit on two of those three picks. Finding success on two out of three picks would be fantastic. Especially when it’s a first, a second, and a third considering they’re respecting conversation rates to impact NHL players. Even hitting on 2/3 late first round picks should be considered a success.

The Blues do seem to have some great recent examples of strong picks outside of the top end so I hope that continues here. The Leafs need to go all in while this core is intact. And that ends as soon as the end of next year. I was fine trading the first round pick, I just hope ROR ends up being the right guy to utilize it on.
