That was my only shot in the dark justification. Having a guy who can step in on occasion either when Necas is with Mack or has Gone Wild could have value. He's also a shoot first player, and we definitely could use that.

My reservation on believing anything with that is how strict Rod's system is. I think the offensive guys creativity are stifled a bit there. I have a feeling Necas wasn't as responsible defensively as he likes his centers to be.

His speed, zone entry ability, and playmaking scream center though. It should be tried, so should him driving offense from the second line. He's proven he can do that already.

But Necas as a 100 point winger next to MacK would make more than Necas the 50 point C trying to carry the corpse of Ross Colton.

Which is pure speculation on destinations and why.

Now I'll give Matt Larkin this, on the Boston idea he uses the same justification I would in that it would need to be a hockey trade, and the reason for the trade would be Boston looking for more offensive creativity. While we'd probably like the two way shoot first style Zacha brings.

Other than that basically everyone is looking for a center.

Winnipeg and Minnesota? Mitts for Nelson? Rotfl

I wonder if Nabokov might be a valuable trade chip for us tbh.


We're pretty much set in net now with Blackwood. Nabokov was on a lot of teams radars at the draft last year and is having another really strong year in the KHL and seemingly wants to come to NA next year.


Could see him being a piece teams covet from us and a piece the Avs wouldn't necessarily be against moving either.

For the right trade nothing should be off the table that's not on the roster, and some of what's on it.

I think Nabokov's timeline fits for when Wedgewood's contract ends tbough.

Wedgewood is signed through next year. Nabokov will join us for next season on an entry-level contract.

When Wedgewood's current deal expires, Nabokov will have had 1 year in the AHL. Might be enough for him to be an NHL backup, might not. Wait and see.

It just makes total sense as a timeline. Obviously if he's not looking ready you could look to extend Wedgy a year or two.

The Avs finally look like they have a legitimately good goalie prospect and you want to trade him away?

I get the timeline with Blackwood is long, but realistically Nabokov will get slow-cooked and not be challenging for the starters job for another 2-3 seasons so it's not like there's urgency to make a decision.

Yeah, I don't care about goaltending at all tbh especially goaltending prospects. We have our starter for the next 5 years and a backup for at least next year who both are very capable.

Nabokov is looking good now but who knows what he'll look like in a year or two. If teams like him and we can use him to make an upgrade to the roster now, I hope we move him.

It'd be a different story for me if we hadn't added Blackwood. But we did. And now I don't think goaltending is a concern long term at all.


The KHL/Russia aspect is a factor for me as well. I dont know that Nabokov is gonna sit around and be "Slow-Cooked" when he can always just go back to where he is now and have plenty of success.

Personally, I think the Avs would sooner trade Ritchie than Nabokov.

First of all, you'd probably get better value for Ritchie and secondly, for what the Avs could get in return right now for Nabokov wouldn't be worth trading him, imo.

I don't think there are a lot of teams who would give up a lot to acquire him until he's proven to be really good at the AHL level. Then who knows, if he becomes the next great Russian goaltender in 2-3 years and the Avs gave him up for a crappy return.

I think they are going to hang on to him for awhile.

Just because Askarov, arguably the biggest goalie prospect in a decade, got Nashville a 1st round pick, doesn't mean that Nabokov suddenly holds value in a trade market.

I mean sure, as part of a package? I guess, because our prospect pool is so f***ing thin otherwise.

To me, this significant. In fact, many discussions on HFAvs talk about traditional positional roles, not necessarily the reality of those positions under Bednar. As everyone here knows, I am at the head of the line on the Fire Bednar train. But I'll give him credit for creativity as his system does not necessarily adhere to historical norms. But a line of

Lehky - Mitts - Necas
Behind
Drouin - Mac - Nuke

could actually hold a lot of potential. While I'd still like Mitts to shoot more, in this trio Lehky would do the dirty work, and Necas could do zone entries and snipe. That leaves Mitts to be creative with passes to Necas in the neutral, and Lehky net-front. Thus Mitts plays the 'center' role of defensive retrieval and stars the breakout.

No, I am not day drinking. I realize that Bednar would never consider some east-west high IQ play. The irony is that this could actually work in his system, and might not in many other teams' systems. To me, I'd rather see Necas breathe life into the second line, and make it one of the better in the league. I have zero problem paying him 2C money as either 1W or 2W. I'd like it to be 8 x $10 but if he keeps up this pace through the season and playoffs, I'd go 8 x $11.5 ( or whatever the Mikko contract was rumored to be) as opposed to losing the guy as a free agent.

It’s on the wing in Seattle where he finally found his footing as an NHLer. I don’t think he’d make for a good center. You want that guy on the wing taking shots.
