Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

Isn't this "deeper draft" narrative mostly based on the top 10 being really strong and by the time pick 28 rolls around, it's pretty much like any other draft?
I heard a recent draft segment on radio in Buffalo that says 1st round quality extends into mid 2nd round. Some drafts it’s stops off on or before the low 20s. Plus top 10 is very strong

As of today that Leafs 1st is 28th overall. Take a look at the 28th overall pick in the past decade and get back to me
Justin Williams, Mike Richter, Corey Perry, and Nick Foligno.

I agree the draft pick has a low chance of drafting an impact guy, but it’s definitely not impossible.

Also I know you said the past decade, but it doesn’t change the fact that there are guys that drop that low for whatever reason.

The top 10-12 is supposed to be stupid but this draft is supposed to be deeper in general. Like the guy going 28 would normally go late teens -20 sort of thing.

But it isn't some insane thing.

It's probably a defense mechanism against critique for opposing fans. I think Leafs paid a substantial price for players that should help us out. Of course there is a lot of risk and we don't know how well this is going to work out.
regardless of how the season ends as of today I think this is a very good trade for the Leafs. Dubai has put the league on notice, cup or bust

The fact that ROR is from Ontario and apparently chose the Leafs is potentially huge. If that means he resigns with the Leafs, and maybe even for a team-friendly deal like Giordano did, then I'm more than fine with this trade.

O’Reilly gets paid 7.5 now and held out and took an offer sheet when he played for the Avs - doubt he is a discount kind of guy! He won’t make 7 but he will not okay for a league minimum …think 3 or 4 floor

Maybe but he didn't sound like he wanted to leave St. Louis. He could go back in offseason.

Watching TSN guy said that high 2nd round picks this draft, are like 1st rd picks in the 20+ range in normal years so yeh it’s a very good draft and deep.

Wasn’t Knies a second round pick and apparently now untouchable? A bit of a strange post.
Nobody is untouchable for the right player.

“Having said that, there are some players and some draft capital that we have that are extremely valuable that we’d be hard-pressed to move on from. Not just (Knies), but a whole group of prospects or younger players off our roster.”

My post was responding to a poster who said a late first has little value.

good for leafs fans to see Dubas go all in. And you kept Knies. This will force TB and probably other eastern contenders into an arms race. Wondering what TO has left to acquire another d-man, or is that no longer a necessity?

Based on previous history with Colorado and Buffalo, it would be unlikely, imo. ROR will probably be looking at a retirement contract with significant bonus or St-Louis would have re-signed him. This is Dubas going all-in as previous Leafs GMs have done.

The Maple Buds getting O'Reilly gives them another top 6 player! Can he still play at that level I guess we'll see very soon. And he won a Conn Smythe award when St Louis won the Cup in 2019 so he's a proven tried and tested play-off "warrior"! Will this be enough to push Toronto to the Finals, again we'll see. Acciari isn't a bad get either. He's scored some goals and should be a regular for the bottom 6. Goaltending should be in good hands with Samsonov and Murray if can stay healthy otherwise the Leafs turn to the quickly emerging Woll. After NYR fired the first silo for Tarasenko,TO fires the 2nd one for O'Reilly let the "arms"race continue

That would be fine. I'm not expecting league minimum, just hoping not having to pay top dollar UFA prices (which we can't do).

Maybe but he didn't sound like he wanted to leave St. Louis. He could go back in offseason.
If he does, then C'est la vie. First things first though of course, let's try to win that cup!

We'll see. As an aside, I don't think the phrase all-in makes any sense when it comes to hockey. It's just one trade, no matter what happens Toronto still has a team, a lot of good players and some good prospects, still many picks left in future drafts ...

The all-in phrase comes from poker and it means when you lose, you have nothing left. That's a completely different thing.

Sorry to give you a hard time, I know that hundreds of people use this term, just my 2c.

You have to look at Knies as another bullet in Dubas gun he is hoping to load up for a playoff run.

I’m not even convinced his ‘untouchable’ status is at all about the future, but again, it’s about this years playoff run.

Dubas wanted Knies on the team for the playoffs last year, he wants him in the team for the playoffs this year. Dubas likely sees Knies as added depth for the run this year.

In that sense, it would have to be a very good deal to remove that addition to the lineup in the now.

If Knies plays well in the 3rd or 4th line in the playoffs, it’s effectively the same as making a trade to improve the team.
