Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

He doesn't have to be. He's our 3rd line C aka maybe the best 3rd line C in the league while being the best defensive C in the league not names Bergeron
who said he did? I am just saying you can't claim that HF boards thinks that Knies has to be thrown in to get ROR becasue a few peoples opinions.

Now as for ROR being the second best defensive C after Bergeron is laughable. This isn't 2018, which is exaclty why Knies wasn't involved.

Nice trade for Toronto. The haters will come out of the woodwork to say you over paid but everyone knows players 1/2 as good as ROR gets a first at the trade deadline . Leafs got to be 1 of the cup’s favourites right now.

Fans of other teams like calling Dubas Dumbass . Wish the Oilers had him

It must be exhausting defending this guy, no? Maybe I should make a thread asking whether Marner is clutch just to create a lot of work for guys like you?

If I were to start such a thread, how do you think it will go?

In any case, it will be a lot of fun watching you try to control the narrative like you’re attempting to do here.
Guy, there’s a poll on this site where 75% of HF voted Marner a 4th line player. This place is basically where intelligence goes to die. Appeals to authority won’t get you far. If you find yourself agreeing with a majority around here, that’s your first hint you need to stop and evaluate.

Leafs swing for fences here but given situation with core and window to potentially contend they had to

Still think Lightning will make a move to counter here

If Leafs go out in 1st round again then naturally this will be failure but you cant bash Dubas here he did what media, fans, etc have wanted

Blues GM has done masterful job with his two trades thus far. As a Hawk fan I dread the Blues loading up for future and looking for fast turnaround

This is when the Lightning swoop in and take Barbashev....

In before people overrate second round picks. Only thing of value is a late first. Cool beans.
Kind of a strange take in a thread when most Leaf fans were saying that Knies, a second round pick, was untouchable.
I doubt that your GM would agree that a second round pick is of no value.

It's a steep price to pay but this is a no-win scenario for Dubas. If he doesn't try to improve the team he will get criticized. If he makes a trade he will get criticized for giving up too much.
I like the trade for the Leafs, I think this puts them in a pretty good position for a cup. i just find the “now everyone is trashing him because he’s a Leaf…” or the “a couple late picks, that’s nothing….” Comments to come off as disingenuous when the same people had Robertson and Knies as untouchables and most Blues fans have been very upfront about ROR’s decline long before he was traded to Toronto. Why can the dialogue be - we paid a big price of futures because our window is now - and leave it at that. So many Toronto posters need to play the victim on here

The leafs also have assets (players) they can move for picks...So before the deadline or at the draft if they want picks they can get them.

It's a weird thinking that once a pick is gone its gone. When you have a decent amount of talent on your roster already it can be moved for picks.

Someone like Sandin would pull in a 2nd round pick, with the prices we're seeing right now at the deadline Holl could pull in a 2nd or a 3rd and a 4th. Tehre are options.

Aren’t they like….5th best in the league in GA/PG?

Sure their defense isn’t full of world-beaters, but it’s not exactly failing them.
Defense also comes a fair bit from having forwards committed to helping. A big part of what has put the Leafs D numbers near the top of the league is the commitment you are seeing from their forwards. They just added 2 forwards which make them even better in that regard and take even more pressure off the dman.

There's also a 1,000 post thread that's a therapy session for how Edmonton fans are oblivious to how the offside rule is routinely applied. Then there are other threads where Edmonton fans finger wag American based fans for their "lack of hockey knowledge/sophistcation".

You're preaching to the choire. I won't disagree with you on the lack of merit of comments from the majority. But that doesn't mean it's not still not annoying to see and address certain narratives.

But in saying that, it's also easy to be pompous by thinking you're always the smartest guy in the room. Sometimes people surprise you.

I can't think of a team thats won a cup with a defense that poor. I know the game isn't played on paper and they're playing well right now but come playoff time it's just going to be more of the same for Toronto.
I mean, it would probably take a look at the past winners then.

Sure “defense wins championships”, but I dunno if the Washington Capitals’ cup winning team was ever considered a defensive powerhouse.

Leaf’s in win now move. Probably the best move they could make. Wise move to get wild to retain. Realistically most that they could acquire with their cap.

StL got good value. 1st worth more than Knies. I am surprised they got a first. Good building blocks

Wild must owe Toronto something. 4th round pick insigificant. Bad trade for them.

I am not a fan of leaf’s but they did good here

But they changed their style under trotz to be much more D responsible

Good trade, fair price, medium amount of risk. With that roster, you need to go all-in at some point. The only better pick up would have been Meier and he will cost more (1st round pick + A prospect).

Should be a good move for the Leafs.
It's too bad the overall cost couldn't have been kept down a touch.
It may cause a bit of over pricing for other players (maybe not).

Now we'll see how Tampa and Boston respond to the "arms race".

As of today that Leafs 1st is 28th overall. Take a look at the 28th overall pick in the past decade and get back to me
I’m very happy with our 28th pick last year ( kulich) who might now be the Sabres best prospect not in the nhl - this is a deeper draft and that pick is more valuable

It's probably a defense mechanism against critique for opposing fans. I think Leafs paid a substantial price for players that should help us out. Of course there is a lot of risk and we don't know how well this is going to work out.

What about the forward depth, or defensive depth, or the goaltending depth…but hey, atleast we’re really elite at center
position!

Leafs #7dman has 13p in 21 games. Every other dman on the roster has played meaningful top 4 minutes for at least 20 games this season. They are very very deep on defense.

Goaltending they have one of the best goaltenders in the AHL and another goalie who has played tons of NHL games for them. You aren't suggesting the Leafs move their first for a rental goalie who isn't any better than what they have for no real reason? You want the Leafs to carry 3 goalies? Because their goalies have been the best goaltending they've gotten consistently in at least 3 seasons
