If ROR put up 65-70 points last year and had 30-35 points in 40 games this season, would the trade return have been any higher? Maybe marginally?

Seems like an overpayment to me given his play this year after already showing some decline last year (especially considering scoring is up around the league, so 58 points for him last year isn't as impressive as a 58 point season 5 years ago).

Anyway, love the player, the grit, the versatility, etc, and I think he's exactly what the Leafs need more of. But i also think they overpaid, especially when you compare it to the Tarasenko/Horvat trades, or trades like Rakell, Lehkonen, etc from last year.

bad luck, goalie jitters, overall poor team play in elimination games or the other team's goalie was just that good I have a hard time telling with this team sometimes

Horvat may have been a pure rental for the Leafs but I’m judging on the package that he actually got from the Islanders, whom he then signed with. So no, ROR is as much or more of a rental than Horvat. Lou planned on signing him and knew well the approximate cost (as did many posters here based on the rumoured rejected deals with Van).

Don’t get me wrong, the Horvat package was better than ROR, but it wasn’t as much better as it should have been given the respective years the two players are having.

Horvat's value in 3 months would have been zero for the Canucks. Any player that is about to sign a big money deal has their value fall considerably in a cap league. Horvat at his contract is worth more then ROR at 1.85 million but the difference in value seems reflective in the price paid. I don't think what the other team does with the player is always relevant in the priced paid.

It’s overlooked because of bias.

Leafs moved down marginally in the draft to dump Mrazek. Not a bad move at all.

I think it's a good deal for the Leafs. They are in win now mode, so late first round picks don't do much for them anyway.

Their bottom 6 wasn't very good but now, it's very solid.

I think they'll look to add something on the blueline and they'll have a great shot to go deep in the playoffs.

I could see Dubas making a move to bolster the defensive depth.

Kerfoot could be moved, but I don’t think this move makes him completely expendable. It definitely makes it so we don’t need to see new 4th liners every other week and potentially scratching ZAR.
