Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

Does that say more about you or him?

Edit: do not mean this as an insult haha

Reminds me of me and my father about baseball - he's a dyed in the wool Yankee fan so I went with the expansion Jays because they weren't the Yankees. And then they wound up being better than the Yankees for about 15 years.

Granted, he's had more than a few laughs about that in the 30-ish years since the Jays last World Series though.

I dont think so tampa is a monster 1st round opponent.

Yeah they're not the team they used to be, they were already a step behind Toronto imo, this puts the Leafs at an even bigger advantage now. But they won their cups I'm sure their fans don't care, but it's exciting for us. Should've had them last year, but now it's basically Toronto added: ROR + Samsonov/Murray, Tampa lost McDonagh + Palat. Heavily swings the odds in Toronto's favor.

Remember that thread literally 3 days ago when Dubas said he wasn't going to trade his 1st round pick and people were clowning on him for not going all in? Funny the reactions in here are so different!! I honestly do not see how this is an over payment though being honest. I guess I never fully bought into ROR being cooked though either.

I mean he's not wrong. It's just pure negativity about the Leafs regardless of what they do. If they did nothing the same people would be making fun about that instead.
Or you can think the other way that maybe it might not have been the right move. People are entitled to an opinion, but staying in an echo chamber is exactly how people got freedom convoys and anti vaxxers.

If you are a Leaf fan just ignore the haters, they will literally show up for anything the Leafs do, or may do, with negativity.

As a third party fan this is a great move for the Leafs, look at his underlying stats and you will see ROR is still creating this year, and they are getting him to be a solid two-way addition to their forward group, and at best the 5th best forward on the team as opposed to one of the top few. Acciari is a sneaky solid add for the 4th line centre role and the Leafs didn't give up any prospects?

Great move by Dubas and the Leafs.

Haters gonna hate.

Now my question is does ROR play wing? OR do they go with the 3 headed monster down the middle and go get a JVR, or Bertuzzi? because they still can with ROR 75% retained

Yeah I relate to this. The Leafs and Yankees are two teams that it’s almost more inviting to hate on.

The first is the only important piece. All the other pieces are garbage. And the first isn't even that bad, its a late first. Hopefully 32.

Kiss Kerfoot goodbye. Assuming ROR plays 3rd line center, then don't need Kerfoot and he wont be on the fourth line.(3.5 mil), So can package someone that needs a small center whose motor doesn't stop but doesnt get anything done.

That's a huge sample size.
Right.
But if you actually cared about sample size, you might look at this year's terrible production and wonder if you were rushing to judgment on the "O'Reilly is Washed" narrative.

There's enough good stuff here for Toronto to feel optimistic about the trade.

Dubas playing chess in the media

Theres more to defending than defensemen lol
Exactly lol

The leafs forward core has the following:

Matthews,Marner,ROR,Kerfoot,Engvall, Kampf, ZAR

All of them are solid defensive forwards and Keefe's system uses them to help our defense out. This trade will only improve the defense

I mean ROR is and has been a vastly superior player to Foligno. Very dumb to compare the two. Even if he’s not the same one from 5 years ago he was elite last playoffs.
I mean he’s not even 0.5PPG and there are injury concerns from what I read above. I think he’ll be better than foligno but not miles better.

Yeah, and I'm not trying to bag on Toronto for the trade. I think it's the type of move they needed. I just think that a lot of the fanbase who were adamant about him not being worth that much changing their tune on a dime is disingenuous. There were some in favor of him though, but they were the minority.

He's not worth that much, but we are a much better team today because of this trade. We did give up more than we should have but I like our chances much more than I did a couple hours ago. I've been preaching that this is the year we need to go all in, all year long. Dubas' job is on the line, and our core is still all here and in their primes. There's no clear juggernaut and this trade gives us as good of a chance as anyone. Hefty price, but you gotta take a big swing at some point or another. Only 1 team will win the cup, so whether it worked out or not remains to be determined.

But the biggest thing here is, we are a much better team now today because of this trade.

Going way, way back, Bylsma would use him at times with Eichel as sort of a "super-line" rather than having them each on their own in certain situations. Jack stayed at center, O'Reilly would slot in on the wing in those circumstances. It's possible they do that again. Or they push Kampf down a line.

I don’t get why Minnesota in their cap situation got involved in this.

Love our center depth now. Deep as the ocean.

All I care about is how ROR performs in the playoffs.

Acciari is also a beautiful add.

I still want a top 6 winger though. Go get someone for that second line.

What would happen if Minny just stopped the trade tree midway?
