Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

lol Leafs fans weren't willing to give up half that for a much better player (Meier)
I mean a lot of us were willing to deal firsts + Knies, but realistically the Leafs were going to get outbid by Carolina/NJ

Might as well adjust our attention and get someone else management likes

Don't really get the Leafs all in thing.. They bought but this is far from all in. Still have all their top prospects, all next years first, all their roster players.

Dubas can easily recoup a first at the draft if he wanted to. This improves the team a lot for really nothing more than a late first. Rest is whatever

Big price for a player who may have lost his edge but O'Rielly is still exactly the kind of player you add for a serious cup run. Dubas needs to save his job and everyone wants to win now. O'Rielly slots perfectly into our bottom 6 and can be a difference maker.

Why is dubas addressing things that arent an issue. I understand the team lacks grit but the d core and the goalies are a way bigger issue imo.

Will be interested to see who he plays with in Toronto. I think you need to give him linemates that have some skill and can play a puck possession style if you want to get the most out of him.
I feel like he would work well with Tavares and Marner

He's the type of player the Leafs need and hopefully he performs well.

Acciari along with ROR is what makes this trade so good for us. We get 2 solid 2 way players, capable of playing on the PK and depth scoring. ROR is likely our 3C, ability to slide up into the top 6 if needed. Him being a local guy gives us a strong chance at re-signing him as well.

The price was pretty expensive, but we didn't move any roster players, this is a solid addition.

No no no. Acciari is a stud on the bottom 6, but you could get him alone for a 3rd. A 2nd at absolute best. That doesn't change the complete about-face Toronto fans have had on ROR's value. It was a solid addition for the Leafs before, but very few north of the border agreed until it broke. It's entirely disingenuous.

All these clueless "last stand", "any cost", "mortgage the future" posts. For a late first, future 2nd/4th and some contract fillers.

That said, I wasn't hoping for ROR but I think he can be a nice fit. Keeping top prospects intact, it's pretty hard to complain about it for me.

ROR is still plenty good. It’s signing him to a 3-4 yr deal that id be worried about. He’ll be a beast in the playoffs.

Scoring depth and grit have been the issue, though.

Goaltending has been more than fine. The D isn’t a problem either. I wouldn’t be opposed to adding on the blue line but it definitely wasn’t their biggest issue. Now that they’ve acquired ROR I could see that being the next move, but a minor one if anything.

These trades always confuse me. Was ROR traded to Minnesota on paper and then they retained, or can you just straight up retain other teams player's salary?

It's technically multiple trades happening.
ROR would need to be traded to MIN by STL and then a second trade would need to be run with MIN trading ROR to TOR with retention

There's no actual three way trades
To the best of my parsing it looks like this:

I’m honestly not sure they can sign him. Unless they ship out Nylander or something. The price to land O’Reilly was higher because of the retention.

Leafs already have Tavares and Matthews down the middle so of course, they need to throw away a first rounder in a great draft to get another big name center.

Another Playstation move for that nerd Dubas
He hasn't even skated at practice with the team and you're already chirping about it. And if Dubas did nothing you'd be here doing the same thing.

I think we all agree it was an expensive price tag, shouldn't be a debate about that. The biggest thing for us is that we added 2 quality players to our current roster and didn't lose a single guy. Just futures, and we still have assets to bring in another player. It's the 75% retention that drove the price up so high.

Great trade. Exactly what toronto needed for a deep playoff run IMO

Toronto makes it past round 1 this year. You heard it here first.

Leafs are better today than yesterday. But boy ohh boy they better win.

Part of me fails to see how this is any different than the foligno trade. This isn’t the oreilly from 5 years ago
