I dont know a thing about Rodrigues, but I do see he got paid 2mil last year for 10 points in 45 games. I have to imagine he's asked to take a cut? I can't see it making sense to pay him 2mil or more with the cap crunch the Leafs are in. Or is he a guy who can shutdown top guys (like a Luke Glendening type)?

His options are to take a hike, or take a cut. Like minimum wage.

Fans should not get too attached to the pick.

Elliotte Friedman who broke this deal was in discussion with Dubas who confirmed it depends on what is available but the pick is very much in play to improve the current roster.

This was mentioned between periods of TB/Bos game.

A big LOL to all of the clowns saying the Leafs would have to ADD to Kapanen to move him.
Was that on the main boards or something? I didn't see that. I don't go to the main boards often, let alone listen to anything said there. Big waste of time.

I was just watching Pierre LeBrun on That's Hockey and he said Dubas offered Kapanen to Carolina in return for the Leafs 2020 1st round pick they got for buying out Patrick Marleau and they obviously said no to that.
From what I heard, Dubas offered Kapanen for the Leafs 1st, but also wanted a prospect as well and that is what made CAR say no.

Rodrigues for Aberg lines up fairly well as an addition to the trade. Aberg signed in Europe and the Pens weren't going to qualify Rodrigues. Both are bubble players with some decent seasons under their belt. Rodrigues is from Toronto and the Leafs have been linked to him in the past. A one way deal at league min in Toronto makes sense for him. I think like Aberg he likely fits in better with the Marlies and see's spot duty on the big club.

Warsofsky in for the Marlies on D at the expense of Lindgren is a loss. The Marlies may actually be better for it as Warsofsky is a seasoned veteran who could see a few NHL games and Lindgren is a wild card. But, the Leafs lose the opportunity to develop a decent prospect.

Kapanen for 15th Overall and Hallander is another bitter move for me similar to the Kadri deal. He was one of our forwards that brought more than just scoring, he played with a serious edge, he was the best skater on the team and a boost for the PK. He will be missed on future Leaf teams as one of those glue guys. But, value wise, that is a nice package of assets. They didn't sell low on him. That is a healthy return. I see Hallander being in a similar tier to Johnsson/Kerfoot/Kapanen. Somewhere in the 35-55 point range per season with some intangibles through his prime. It would be nice if he could land at center ice and fill in at 3C in a couple years.

Unless we move up to 12 ahead of Carolina and take Askarov if he is there. :naughty:
Leafs rarely drafts Goalies, they also rarely draft Russians, yet alone with a 1st rounder. If Askarov is there at 15 either they trade down, or they draft someone else imo. I just don't see them doing it.

July 1st 2015 - Leafs trade Phil Kessel along with Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon and a 2016 2nd round pick (Kasper Bjorkqvist) for Scott Harrington, Kasperi Kapanen, 2016 1st round pick (Sam Steel), 2016 3rd round pick (JD Greenway)

.

There must be 2 Sam Steel's. The one I know plays for the Ducks and was selected 30th overall in 2016 by the Ducks.

Since Dubas has taken over the drafts (2 of them) we have drafted 3 Russians and a goalie.

Can a qualifying offer be less then the previous years salary? Does anyone know how that works?
I asked the same question. If we don't accept his QO, he goes to free agency. He can accept whatever offer he wants at that point.

Most posts you read seem to imply we can just offer him less likes its kind of an automatic thing. The first sentence above describes the actual procedure.

He won't get a qualifying offer - as the Leafs are bound to that. He can sign a contract for league minimum or above though. The Leafs will not qualify him and will make him a UFA if he's not willing to sign for cheap.

As per CBA a qualifying offer on a current contract < $1 mil requires a 10% manditory increase. Anything above $1 mil requires a contract at par to the last one the player had.

Leafs QO for Rodigues must be $2 mil to retain his rights, with no QO submitted he becomes a UFA instead of an RFA like he currently is.

I like the trade for the Leafs. I am sick of hearing all the pundits saying “we have to wait and see who the Leafs select with the pick and who they use the cap space on before we can see how good the trade is.”

No, you don’t.

Acquiring the pick and the selection made are not dependent on each other. In 2011 the Leafs traded Kris Versteeg to Philly for a 1st and a 3rd, that was incredible value for Versteeg. The fact that the Leafs used that 1st to select Stuart Percy does not take away from that value, it just means the Leafs were bad a drafting.

I like Kapanen but it had to be done. Mikheyev and/or Robertson can fill in on the 3rd line at cheaper, the pick can either add an ELC to the organization or be peddled for a defenseman, and it creates flexibility cap wise.

If the Leafs can trade Johnsson to create more cap room, find a bargain bin UFA for 3rd/4th line wing, and sign/trade for 2 defensemen. I think it will be a very productive offseason.

Also, after an injury riddled season what would it cost to possibly acquire and sign Josh Anderson from Columbus to potentially replace Kapanen at 3rd RW?

Idk I feel like we're getting rid of the wrong type of guys (Kadri, Kapanen). We need a bit more of what they bring.

Would have preferred to give up Johnsson but his value is probably unimaginably low.
