So we moved 13th to get rid of Marleau so we could re-sign Kapanen and Johnsson.

So we basically move down two spots, still have Johnsson, and got Hallander. Sweet deal imo. I don't think Askarov will still be around but hopefully a defensemen will be there.

Watch us flip Kerfoot for something now that makes us forget all about Kadri lol

If anything JR giving up a first-rounder for Kapanen will annoy (polite term for it) other GMs when they go looking for a 3rd line, 15 goal scorer at a $3m cap hit.

If the rumors are correct (source: LeBrun on That's Hockey), Dubas was shopping Kap right after the Leafs got bounced and every team thought the price (1st round pick + "decent" prospect) was too expensive. Except the Pens of course. Read into that what you will, but I'm pretty sure this entire board would have been laughing their arse off at Dubas for thinking he was going to get that for Kapanen. He didn't back down and he got it.

For the 3 people out there who say the Pens won because they got the best player right now, I'd suggest that logic would have the Devils winning the 2013 deal with the Canucks when they got Schneider for the 9OA ... Today? Not so much.

For the others that say the Leafs are a weaker team right now because they gave up Kap and got no sure-fire NHLers in return, I'd argue they had four 3rd liners already (Kap, Andreas, Nick, Kerfoot) for 3 spots, none of which were moving up or down a line ... so, how are they weaker unless Robertson isn't capable of picking up the massive void of Kasperi's 13 goals next season?

Still thinking about the incredible value we received. This is probably the highest we've sold on an asset in a long time.

Rentals at the trade line go for that, it’s meh value, He must be after D from one of the cap teams that need to move a player without taking anyone back.
It might turn out as incredible value tho when that happens

I have no issue with engvall on the 3rd line either

ahhhh no,,,,,, 1rst at the 15th slot range? ahh no they actually don't

and those 20/30 range 1rsts usually go to the premium deadline guys.

The
They Leafs arguably paid less for Muzzin than Pitts did for Kapanen, this is way more than a rental return. Ridiculous.
it is not arguably, Leafs did paid less for Muz than Kap.
The thing is Pens know the 1st rounder is 15th overall. Whereas Kings didn’t know which spot the 1st rounder might end up, could be 28th or 18th.

I agree with most of what you said but Kapanen has been a very solid playoff producer and especially good in clutch moments.

He has that lethal speed and skill to be able to change the momentum of a game if the right pass comes along.

That said, we traded away one missile and have other, different options to fill that turret, so I fully agree with letting him go, especially given the value we got in return.
Sure, he's got the speed, but he's missing the IQ and compete consistentcy

Exactly this. Agreed

I still can't believe this trade. Hoping to see Johnsson moved next (for futures).

There's been a lot of talk today of teams not giving qualifying offers to some players in fear that they will get more in arbitration than the teams can afford with a flat cap. Anyone know any players that may fall into this category?

That’s too much from the Leafs.
Maybe Bc I have not seen Comotis played since WJC but just looking at his stats, he is being hyped up way too much.
Manson and Comotis for 15 and Engvall seems more fair, at least to me.

That’s way too much, look at what we paid for Muzzin.

Really like this deal.
The pick and Hallander are legit assets. Kap’s a definite talent, and his break neck speed is a loss, but there’s NickRob and Barbaranov and other options this off-season.
I’m curious about the plan with Martinez and the next moves coming. He seems like a complimentary guy who can shuffle around a few lines if the money is right, but if not, okay too - the cap space is gold.

Rodrigues?

Maybe Tony DeAngelo I’ve read a few times could be one, he’s interesting

Yes, Dubas did get more than I expected he would. Yes, I believe the Leafs won the trade, but only if the team improves through other means. It wasn't entirely highway robbery if we break it down. Especially if Kappy becomes a permanent 2nd line winger.

GM's are in different spots. Penguins didn't make the playoffs either according to the pandemic rules, which is not right, but, it's also the reality. Assistant coaches have been fired, after a head coach change recently (last year?). There is heat on Ruthford, just as there is heat on Dubas. A GM has to get improvements when he sees them, and Pens, like the Leafs, need to improve for today (Leafs need cap space to do so). Crosby and Malkin won't be in their prime forever.

Also, let's not forget Kappy is a former 1st round pick himself, picked by this team and was ranked higher than 22nd by many teams. So, they get back the Kessel piece and they repaid a better draft pick while having him under contract at a reasonable price for 3 years. They get a seasoned player who hasn't hit his ceiling and a player they believed in when they first drafted him.

Only loser franchises accept mediocrity and shrug their shoulders. It's been four years, they know enough to know the makeup requires changes. Maybe even big changes. I'm rooting for Dubas to figure it out. I hope he goes for it and doesn't settle for patch work if he can find another way. Go for the best players you can, even if it requires subtraction.
