Since Dubas has taken over the drafts (2 of them) we have drafted 3 Russians and a goalie.
and none of them were in the first round. There are just certain player that you know they will never draft, even if they are BPA. I will be impressed if they draft Askarov.

Woke up to this, Wow!

Prior to the Columbus series, I'd predicted that Kappy could be our secret weapon. Boy, was I wrong. Kudos to Dubas for acquiring a solid return, and doing it quickly. It should help his reputation moving forward with the other GMs, a reputation that had taken a hit after the Kadri/Barrie, Kerfoot trade.

I don't know nearly enough about the players who might be available at 15, but I'd guess there are a few solid options.
Hallender, from what I've read, suffered a broken leg a couple of years ago, he's an intriguing add.
The freed up Cap space is nice to see.

I think the fun question is whether he continues to rework the roster while the iron is hot, or settles in for a bit. Regardless, a good start.

Idk I feel like we're getting rid of the wrong type of guys (Kadri, Kapanen). We need a bit more of what they bring.

Would have preferred to give up Johnsson but his value is probably unimaginably low.
I think the return was just too good to pass up. But I agree, we trade away a Kadri, and we are immediately scratching our heads, looking for another Kadri.

Had you heard rumblings of the Kap trade before today?

I am unfortunately no longer able to comment, and I dont believe I am even able to mention why due to the board TOS.

So I am officially retired in the breaking gossip capacity.

But as a hockey fan Im sure there will be a facelift this offseason that includes more cap going out and an attempt to reshape the bottom 6.

As per CBA a qualifying offer on a current contract < $1 mil requires a 10% manditory increase. Anything above $1 mil requires a contract at par to the last one the player had.

Leafs QO for Rodigues must be $2 mil to retain his rights, with no QO submitted he becomes a UFA instead of an RFA like he currently is.
You missed the fact that he's free to sign with the Leafs for any amount at or above league minimum right now if he wants.

It's already been posted. The 4 are:

Andersen
Johnsson
Kerfoot
Engvall.

Hyman and Rielly are going nowhere.

I wonder what the plan is for a goalie then? I'm not overly concerned, but somewhat concerned I suppose. Just wondering most of all.

Well that sucks, I’ll miss the tidbits you’ve given us over the years, always have looked for your posts

Don’t like the trade for Dubas. Kappy is a good second liner who can contribute now, don’t see the 15th overall doing that anytime soon. Unless he sets up a bigger trade with it, I don’t like this move as anything more than Dubas trying to take some of the heat off himself by making some noise before the draft. Also not thrilled with Hallander as a prospect either.

Well that f***ing sucks but par for the course around here I guess.

So now the criteria is first round picks?

I guess we’ll be drafting a Swedish defensemen playing in the OHL this year

Krapanen was none of that. Second liner only on a 32nd place club. Brain dead simpleton who had tunnel vision and the IQ of a houseplant. Doesn't have a clue what a linemate is used for.

Good riddance. Rodrigues alone would have been a win.

PS - Fixed your original post to what you really mean.

I like Kapanen his speed is elite but his hockey IQ seemed to hold him back and wasnt always engaged. Hopefully he can refocus in Pitt but it didnt look like it was happening in Toronto.

Can a qualifying offer be less then the previous years salary? Does anyone know how that works?

Contracts don't expire until October.

The contract Dubas is talking about with Rodrigues has nothing to do with qualifying offers. Rodrigues is not a RFA yet.

Kappy is not a 2nd liner. He always fell flat when he moved up in the top 6. He is a speedster low IQ player.
Also saying the 15th overall player won't be doing that for not liking a deal is bad logic
Just because you don't like Hallander, doesn't mean he isn't good.

The return for Kapanen is better than Barrie and Kerfoot from the Kadri trade, imo.

That 1st round pick, 15th overall is a big chip possibly to be used to find a very good d-man in a trade or in the draft. Kapanen imo isnt even worth a first round pick unless its 30th or so. Kapanen has proven to be outsmarted and confused by opponents over and over again.

I know the contracts are not officially expired yet, I thought that was implied that I was referring to the off-season. Either way, no worries, three others got it and answered the question.

i think the 4 players being dangled are hyman, rielly, kerfoot and *maybe* andersen

hyman, in my mind, is the most likely player to be dangled. dude just did 40 points, 47 pace and 60 pace and is a gud pro meaning some idiot is going to want to overpay for him. his point share is an incredible overperformance due to his presence on the top line. looking at 1st + conditional 2nd

rielly same situation... 2 firsts + top prospect

56 pace, 72, 52 pace...

even just focusing on those 3 outside of andersen, you can get an absolute volley of futures and prospects, cap space while impacting very very little of the core.

if leafs play their cards right, they could set themselves up nicely for the future and open up potential flexibility on trading out bigger contracts if needed later on.
If Babcock gets another coaching gig, I can see Hyman going there for a kings ransom.

my bad when you mentioned the "lower amount" I jumped to conclusions.
