I liked Grebenkin but he was going to be a 4th or maybe a third liner at some point?

You get an effect 3C with retention. Signed for another year and some extra picks coming back.

Not jumping through hoops but I can live with this. We are a better team today.

I love these posts. Which impact dman? be specific and what both teams agree on for the price.

Leafs have lost the last 3 years because they can't score goals in the playoffs. That is factual. It has never been an issue of keeping the puck out even with suspect goaltending

That's actually Brad's job to figure that out. He gets the big bucks to put it all together despite never winning a single f***ing thing.

Laughton has 11Gs on his season and has never even scored 20. That is factual.

Not a BAD trade for the Leafs, but I wonder if Laughton is really that much of a needlemover.
in a vaccum yes

our biggest need has been a 3C as domi has shown to be incapable in playing C in his own zone, but I don't know if it is a needlemover compared to Gourde + Bjorkstrand or Jones + Sturm

Well Florida is also without Tkachuk, although they did get better if you look at it overall, they are significantly worse without him.

The Tampa additions were nice, they paid a lot but are undoubtedly a much better team.

Considering we got 50% retention and still have the '26 1st + Cowan + Minten, I think we can expect another move before the deadline

TSN saying it's a conditional first?
+ retention makes it sound a lot better. Depending on the condition of course.
Top-10 protected, confirmed by LeBrun.

The retention + another year at a strong bargain AAV 1.5m at 3C is huge.
Not horrible considering rentention and the extra year.

Wondering if there's conditions on it.
These 2 are x-factors that move this deal in Leafs favor by a fair margin when you consider the rumored cost and other deals this DL, IMO

This isn’t even remotely close to some of the brutal overpays of this week - - tremendous deal by Treliving.

Flyers undersold on Kuzmenko and they undersold again with Laughton.

Grebekin is a goofy try-hard with some cute little sound bites but he’s a career minor leaguer. Please don’t embarrass yourself by proclaiming Grebekin is a “top prospect”.

Getting 50% retention for this year AND next year is huge. Most cases it’s just retention for pending UFAs.

Giving up a future 1st round pick ALWAYS has less value than giving up a current year’s 1st round pick.

are you confusing top prospect with good prospect?

The 1st is a top 10 protected 2027 1st... That's likely a player that doesn't make a team until 2029, or later, especially if the pick is a D man. The Toronto window is now... 2029 and later doesn't matter much. For a third line player, at $1.5 million for two years, that's not a bad deal.

Grebenkin is a super fun player, tons of character and plays with an edge. He's only at 0.5PPG in the AHL this year though, so the offensive upside might be somewhat limited, probably a fourth liner in a couple of years. Sad to see him go, but at least it's not one of the players with more upside.

That sucks. Toronto has everything to lose going forward, do something that actually moves the needle.
