It's certainly a steep price to pay, but ultimately...that was always going to be the case on Laughton. He was always going to be one of those "wah he costs too much for what his JFresh chart says" type players. He's a gritty, rugged, versatile Top-9 Utility Forward who can plug in pretty much anywhere in the lineup and contribute at even strength and on the PK at either C or W. That was bound to fetch a premium price at any deadline...but particularly one with a very weak crop of Centers. The Leafs couldn't spend what it took for Brock Nelson and still get their defenceman as well, and Charlie Coyle was a complicated and risky deal to work out.
The biggest thing a lot of people are overlooking here, is that with max retention, Laughton isn't just on a "good contract" with term remaining...he's on an absolutely stellar contract with term remaining. He's easily a full value at $3M this year and next. At $1.5M with the cap set to go bonkers in the summer...that's an absolute steal for next year as well, and affords them the flexibility to bring in a guy like Carlo who provides a substantive upgrade to their blueline as well.
Whether that's actually enough to upset the Florida Teams or not, is how this will ultimately all be judged with hindsight down the road. But this is a move that does provide the Leafs with multiple kicks at it, rather than going all in on a single outing. Laughton addresses a clear need in the Leafs lineup in a way that bolsters multiple weak points at once. I think it's a solid deal for them, even if it's pricey on the surface.
And for Philly...it's also a great deal. Moving a guy who isn't going to move the needle for a team in their rebuilding position...for a very solid haul. It's still entirely plausible that Laughton ends up being the best player in this entire deal...but the Flyers are in a position where they can't afford to just settle for that middle-of-roster known entity, and have to take the swings on what Grebyonkin and that conditional/late-1st pans out to be.
