That's actually Brad's job to figure that out. He gets the big bucks to put it all together despite never winning a single f***ing thing.

Laughton has 11Gs on his season and has never even scored 20. That is factual.

Do a lot of teams have a 20-25 goal 3rd line center?

not going to lie, losing Grebenkin doesnt bother me all that much, spending more 1sts does. I dont really believe in this team and imo they have no business spending to try and win anymore, they have done this for years and no matter how much they improve nothing ever changes. it's almost like the real issue is the core.

I mean Ill be watching still anyways because anything CAN happen but after almost a decade of this I think we have seen this story playout

I’m with you, bro

I think these moves were needs but this team hasn’t proven that filling holes at astronomical prices is at all worth it.

If they don’t win a cup this year, at least these two moves weren’t for rentals and they get another crack at it

If they were just rentals I’d be PISSED

the problem isnt with our adds, its with our core and changes should have been made after we blew a 3-1 series lead to MTL.
now we dont have a 1st for the next 4 years. this feels like we are trending back to to the early 00's when we spent everything and took over 10+ years to see progress

Agreed. Montreal was the moment everyone should have realized changes need to be made at the top of the roster, not around the edges

I wasn’t saying that they did, I was saying no one does so why is that the bar the guy I was responding to wanted our 3rd line center to reach?
Well last year’s winner had 4 20+ goal scoring “centres” (based off how NHL.com classes them). Would have to dig to see how often it happens.

Did uh you read the post I was responding to?

Coyle scored 25 last year. Dallas could have all of Granlund, Marchment, Dadonov, and Benn hit 20 this year. Lundell likely hits 20 this season for Florida.

Not a lot of teams have a 20-25 goal scorer on their 3rd line no. But the real good ones usually do.

I really don't like the price. A 1st and a good prospect should get you a much better player. I'd have been fine with that for Brayden Schenn, not Laughton.

Congrats on the win, Flyers fans.

Now that he's a Leaf, I hope he plays as good as his interviews sound.
I think the Leafs panicked when Schenn didn't want to waive for Toronto. "hey we're comfortable getting rid of this, let's see who bites"

Decent addition I guess.

But going into that 2027 season looking at the draft capital and seeing you don't have your 1st because you traded it for Scott Laughton won't be a good feeling.

Greb probably needs one more year in the AHL to round out his game. But he is going to be a great add for Philly in a year or 2. Smart move by Philly.

Besides his off ice persona...Greb really brought anything memorable to his game. I think he fought once?

Great hockey trade. Leafs needed a player like Laughton.

Considering the prices other teams paid for players, this is very reasonable. Didn't expect to get a few picks back

I don't understand actually what Laughton has done to have this kind of value. Never heard of him before the season, and then watched some of Phily games, and he never was anything remarkable. Just another bottom sixer and nothing more. And then it's 1st + Grebenkin... I mean it won't surprise me at all, if Grebenkin turns out to be the better player than Laughton in a couple seasons. And Flyers got 1st to this...

Leafs did great at the TDL. Imo they set themselves up to win their division and have a much easier first round opponent, while watching the two Florida clubs kill each other. The club they then face in round two will likely be missing (or have seriously banged up) key players making that round easier. I see this as the year they had to go all in because things set up really good for a Cup run if they can grab that top division spot.

Grebenkin is a perfect fit for Philly. Has skill, grit and will drop them. He’s in the vein of Komarov and Danny Markov as an annoying agitator. Some slight awkwardness in skating but he makes up for it in effort. Torts will love him for his compete, but not sure about the scrum quotes…meh he’ll probably love him regardless.

It's certainly a steep price to pay, but ultimately...that was always going to be the case on Laughton. He was always going to be one of those "wah he costs too much for what his JFresh chart says" type players. He's a gritty, rugged, versatile Top-9 Utility Forward who can plug in pretty much anywhere in the lineup and contribute at even strength and on the PK at either C or W. That was bound to fetch a premium price at any deadline...but particularly one with a very weak crop of Centers. The Leafs couldn't spend what it took for Brock Nelson and still get their defenceman as well, and Charlie Coyle was a complicated and risky deal to work out.

The biggest thing a lot of people are overlooking here, is that with max retention, Laughton isn't just on a "good contract" with term remaining...he's on an absolutely stellar contract with term remaining. He's easily a full value at $3M this year and next. At $1.5M with the cap set to go bonkers in the summer...that's an absolute steal for next year as well, and affords them the flexibility to bring in a guy like Carlo who provides a substantive upgrade to their blueline as well.

Whether that's actually enough to upset the Florida Teams or not, is how this will ultimately all be judged with hindsight down the road. But this is a move that does provide the Leafs with multiple kicks at it, rather than going all in on a single outing. Laughton addresses a clear need in the Leafs lineup in a way that bolsters multiple weak points at once. I think it's a solid deal for them, even if it's pricey on the surface.

And for Philly...it's also a great deal. Moving a guy who isn't going to move the needle for a team in their rebuilding position...for a very solid haul. It's still entirely plausible that Laughton ends up being the best player in this entire deal...but the Flyers are in a position where they can't afford to just settle for that middle-of-roster known entity, and have to take the swings on what Grebyonkin and that conditional/late-1st pans out to be.

I'm looking forward to seeing Laughton play on a good team. That's only happened a couple of times in his decade long career. Toronto fans will like him. Above average skater, above average wrist-shot, good forechecker and backchecker, physical, great in the lockerroom, and an excellent PKer that is a threat to score short-handed. Really good at finishing breakaways too. Oddly enough, for being such a good PKer, his dzone awareness at 5V5 is one of his weaknesses. Tends to lose his man from time to time.

I have nothing but respect for Laughton for one other important issue, his work with You Can Play and being a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ community.
