4.7, 6.9, 11.6 expiring in 2 years. No one's going to have that cap space.

Not quite but I think Kings will be able to offer Matthews something competitive. It's gonna go beyond $$ though I think, he also is gonna need to believe he can win.

They also don't have a good goalie and their defence looks like it will be questionable too in 2 years. Danault could also be a boat anchor at that point.

Nothing is a slam dunk.

Those numbers are currently already accounted for. Muzzin/Murray come off at the same time, so that's over $10 million to cover any potential raises.

I doubt it, they're going to use up a lot of their cap making incremental post ELC contracts and upgrades this offseason and next.

Kings.

Kopitar contract is over.
That’s a team that I think that could attract Mathews depending where they are standing in the future. Maybe Mathews wants to go with a team closer to home that he feels will contend. The Leafs haven’t been contenders for decades. Maybe he even takes less. We don’t know. Hopefully he signs an extension obviously.

Muzzin expiring too? That's going to be alot of shopping!

Signed by this trade deadline?
We have to see how the next 2 years go.
We can afford to pay Matthews whatever he wants. Everyone can afford 1 superstar salary.
If this team still hasn’t made any progress by then (or this year), you can’t keep coming back with the same core. Something needs to change.

McDavid made 16.6% of the cap when signed. That was coming off his first Hart and Art Ross seasons. I think that's you're baseline with Matthews. This would be a $13.6 AAV .. Factoring in age of when McDavid won and what he's done since, I'd try to get something around $13, with $13.6 as my upper range.

The benefit is that we'll see a large cap increase in a short amount of time. So that 16.6% of the cap will drop relatively soon.

Even so, we will be seeing an increase of both Matthews and Marner. I wouldn’t go the same route again depending on how much if a raise Nylander would want. I wouldn’t be going 9 or 9 plus with him.
Concentrate on 2 forwards this time and refill the depth plus goalie/D.
Even Calgary might have to decide with Gaudreau that’s too much on forward vs. team.

My guess is that if Matthews chooses, he can extend as the highest paid player in the league and he will be the next captain.

If he stays with the Leafs the world is his oyster. He seems to really want to win here and enjoys the spotlight in his own quiet manner.

Hopefully he wants to go down in NHL history a Leaf legend.

I've been on the move Nylander bandwagon because he would get the best value out of a trade (given his cap hit and production) .. build around Matthews and Marner.

And looks like Johnny G decided to not take that $10 x 8 offer from Calgary.

Sutter and Nylander would be fun to watch. 😂

The days of staying in a Canadian market are fast ending. There are a whole host of legit reasons to leave Canada right now.

Some may go as far as to not like Bank account seizures as a result of private donations.
*Toronto has suspect management at this point as well

I don't think there is any contractual advantage given anymore where a teams marquee draft picks are concerned

Not every player really cares about winning that much. Some would rather live in a place that gives them their preferred lifestyle.

I liked the Murray presser today. Sure it would be good if he was more retained, but I’m glad Dubas picked him up.

Happy if we add someone to the tandem tomorrow. Samsonov would be a fun pickup.

California or Toronto?

He's banked a ton of cash already and would only bank more and enjoy sunshine etc and less time in customs.

I think he does want to win...I think at least getting a series win would be something at this point for him which is a reasonable expectation. Going 0-7 in 1st round would be pathetic.

The spotlight.
Some welcome it.
