You talk about having no credibility and then say something like, "If the player we gave nothing up for becomes good this deal is horrific.". You couldn't be less self aware if you tried.

I don't think Murray is the fix, but the deal is fine since we gave up nothing. Murray can be flipped for a back alley handy and we are no worse off.

This issue with me is that it takes away needed cap space. $1 - $1.5 million can make a difference.

Now they're priced out of some solid depth pieces.

I've been a huge supporter Dubas, but had the Soo pulled wool over your eyes? 25%????? This is now your starting goaltender.

Is this how you plan to entice Matthews to stay?

In my mind, this is likely the move that gets him fired or atleast the move that is going to cost the Leafs major assets during the season to address.

Just awful.

To all the people who said we had a plan, we just overpaid out of desperation. Wake up and get away from the Dubas shrine. We got a goalie sure, but a suspect one and a bigger hit on the books than anyone thought. What a time to be alive Leaf fans! Give me a D, gimme a U, give me a break.

At the draft, Ottawa reportedly had a deal to send Murray (25% salary retained) and the 7th overall pick to Buffalo in exchange for the 16th overall pick. It only fell apart after Murray invoked his NTC. That usually costs the equivalent of an early 2nd rounder.

Somehow Dubas didn't even manage to get that. He also paid late 2nd/early 3rd value to move down from 25 at the draft in order to dump the contract of an oft-injured, poorly performing goalie, only to now acquire a goalie in a similar position at an even greater salary.

And because he didn't get the full retention, getting a good 1B for Murray is going to be difficult, or come at the cost of even treading water elsewhere in the lineup. Almost seems as if Dubas backed himself into a corner by moving Mrazek and then finding that there were no good options.

All in all, I agree this is a defining moment for this regime. I am generally happy with the job Dubas has done, but he's now put our Stanley Cup aspirations in the hands of Matt Murray. Maybe he wins that bet, but it ain't one that I would've taken, and is bold/stupid enough that it should probably cost his job if it fails.

Husso 4.75
Murray 4.68

😑😑😑

Husso stats in carrer in playoff

3.67 gaa
0.890%

Murray
2.18 gaa
0.921 sv %

Im still prefer take a risk with Murray to win in PLAYOFF than Husso...

I will prefer a okay goalie during regular season who are able to elevate his game during playoff like what Binnington did last season before get injured than a goalie looking good in regular season and chocking during playoff..

Yeah it's worse considering the real dollars and how cheap Ottawa is.

And I feel like we were the only ones interested. Should have done better.
Exactly. Imo it's fine in a vacuum, but with the hype, the rumoured Buffalo trade, and what we saw Kassian cost to trade it seems insane we got so little for taking on 4.6M in cap.

Why. We just got rid of an injury prone goaltending headache and gained cap space for this?
I miss the free agent days when Belfour and Cujo came. Hope he proves me wrong. Maybe Murray can rebound with a good team. That's still big chunk of cap for a question mark.

As a Sens fan that loves to see Leafs land implode, in all seriousness when Murray is on his game and healthy, he is absolutely an elite goalie and worth every penny of that 6m+ contract.

Only issue is his confidence is real shaky and he's had concussion issues for the past year so there is some risk but this can legitimately be a good deal for you guys
It's okay, Toronto has never been a place to alienate a goaltender's confidence, especially when the fanbase is already super pissed off and desperate for postseason success.

This is such a stupid post. Like insanely dumb which reeks of not understanding value.

This trade is akin to paying $2k for an oz of gold when the spot price is $1.5K and then being happy next year when the gold price is $2.5K. No thats still a stupid f***ing move.

Good lord what a dumb post. We got less than what the sabres would have gotten during the draft. Give your head a shake.

I look forward to the acceptably meh trade that Dubas makes to clean up the mess that this trade creates after another first round exit.

If this trade doesn't work out, he should not have that opportunity. He should be out of a job.

I will say this, it takes guts to make this trade knowing what the reaction will be. He really has to believe in Murray and whatever plan he has for the offseason,

Since I didn't have much confidence in Dubas before, this does not help. I have no idea what the logic is here. He now has a goalie who is more expensive than the guy he just traded in a cap dump, who has similar injury and performance questions.

We still have to see what the rest of the offseason holds. However, if the Leafs start the season and the goaltending fails because of decisions like this, Dubas should be out the door.

Kyle Dubas betting it all on a Matt Murray making 4.69mil for 2 years. He has the potential to look like a genius, or time will prove we basically have another Mrazek. I will say though, his familiarity with the player...he likely knows who, as a person, he's betting on. Would love to see Murray get his career back on track here and be that legit #1 of old. Between losing his father and Injuries, he's undoubtedly had some rough years in the past few. I'll say I thought we would have gotten a better sweetner, and/or more retention....but as far as Murray the goaltender goes, I'm excited to watch him play, and I'll hold negative judgement on the deal until all the facts are in.
Welcome to TO Matt, hope you're what we've been needing.
If it doesn't work, Dubas will absolutely be fired. I don't see him escaping from that, no matter what.
