That's a lot for 5 years. Remember when players would get ~paid~ when they actually had awards to back themselves up.

Dermott has been terrific, he'll move into Gardiner's spot and probably carry the 2nd pairing. He's done that with a larger 3rd pairing role than the one he had last year, and has played really well when getting the chance to play up the lineup
thing is Dermott isn't going to make 800k forever.

If he becomes a great contributor, he's gonna need a significant raise after next year.

Just like Reilly will need essentially double the money in 3-years and Andersen with command probably a 50% raise at minimum in 2-years.

it's called inflation.

Crosby signed in 2013-2014 for almost 9M, cap hit was around 60M
Mcdavid signed in 2018-2019 for 12.5M, cap hit will be almost 80M

do you kind of understand the inflation + why Crosby seem to have a " budget salary" but at the time it was HIGH.

im aware of this. Im not the one arguing that this is a bad deal. its called inflation...

when the Caps 100+ mil in a few yrs no one will care about this term.. as they shouldnt

Doesn't buy up any UFA years, and only 5 years for 1.63M more per year than Eichel at 8 years. Not a good deal when you compare it to McDavid or Eichel's deals.

Matthews is set for another big pay day when he turns 27M His agents schooled Dubas with this deal.
I’d take Matthews and his contract over Eichel’s and his any day. I imagine most GMs would do the same.

Its still mostly BS. He's obviously pissed about losing, but he signed for eight years when he didn't have to and still says he wants to be part of the solution.

When he signed for 8 years, didn't they just come off a playoff run? Things only went south afterwards didn't they?

Offersheeted they thought. Numpty

We have him for 5... if he walks , so be it. If we haven't hoisted the main prize in less than 5 years... It was a failed build anyway.
I guess the Leafs thought the offersheet threat was real and wanted him done before than. Agreed on your second point.

You're almost as angry as the Leaf haters waking up to the fact that the Leafs core, in all liklihood, will be in place for the next 5 years. Perhaps take a breath.

Too be fair in a few years when Morgan and Andersen need extensions it’s going to be ugly. The team hasn’t won anything or even proven anything in the playoffs and the players are being rewarded like Kane and Toews where after winning 3 Cups. The bonus money, short term, buyout proof contracts are ridiculous

I love this has gone from:

  • Matthews will be offer sheeted
to
  • Matthews will get 13-14M and is over paid
to
  • Matthews will be offer sheeted
to
  • Matthews is over paid at 11.634M

No matter what so many people were trying to find a bad angle and not matter what this wouldn't be good for the Leafs. Spin away Leafs haters, spin away!
People were saying 13 million with the impression that it would come with 8 years.
This contract is even worse.
I never thought he would be offer sheeted, but definitely, I never foresaw him taking the leafs to the cleaners like this.

Matthews is 21, and not 28-29 or whatever Kopi and Doughy was when you signed those guys. Major difference.

still the unknown factor is true

you and i both cannot confirm what a 26 year old Matthews will do
if he becomes the next Wayne Gretzky ok... they'll pay him when the time comes, if not, they'll trade him a year before for a MAJOR MAJOR HAUL

but if he completely falls off, well, no more bad contract on your books!

regardless the Leafs have him locked for half a decade, there's no issue, people are just fabricating issues here

Just as long as there's still 1.2 million left over for Phil Kessel.

Seriously though, I know Bobby Mac was talking last night of the cap going up to 85 million come next season, but if it doesn't capfriendly is now showing 7.5 cap space for next season with the likes of Marner, Kapanen, Johnsson to name but a few still to be signed.

Anyone still doubting a lockout?
Expecting lockouts based on contracts isn’t how this works. I would see a strike being more of an issue. The owners don’t care. 50% of revenue is 50% no matter how the players divide up their share.

Buyout proof (not really relevant for an elite 21-26 year old).

I believe signing bonus income is taxed at Matthews place of residence, which is likely a lower taxed jurisdiction.
It’s investing / interest . It may be your thing as well but lump sum up front nets you more money from letting it sit

Such an amazing deal for Matthews.

Not so great for the Leafs.

Gets to be the 2nd highest paid player in the game, but still becomes UFA at 26.

Ouch.

Only positive is that when the Leafs have to sign him next (Or any time for that matter) He will be only 26 and given he will be UFA I dont even know what kind of money he could be looking at especially if he ends up winning a cup, I'd feel quite a bit more confident throwing a max or near max deal at a 26 than 29 year old.

If Matthews turns into a ghost in the playoffs again, I bet the fans will begin to turn on him.
