Buyout proof (not really relevant for an elite 21-26 year old).

I believe signing bonus income is taxed at Matthews place of residence, which is likely a lower taxed jurisdiction.

I don't know about that. Could be. Even if it isn't, the bonuses could be deferred like Doan did. Defer to after expiration - an agreed upon date. Get them when he's retired in AZ.

Damn that’s expensive as hell for only 5 years......damn. Guessing he wanted 13 million maybe more over 8 years. Not great deal IMO.

Leafs better hope they win stanley cup in the next 5 years because after that it's gonna be another long long wait before they have cap to compete.

This doesn’t make sense. Teams should spend to the cap, and if you’re core players are the biggest cap takers that would be a good thing. It’s bad contracts like Lucic and Eriksson that screw up a team.

Laugh all you like, but to get your superstar signed and clear his head before the playoffs in a contending year is huge.

To avoid any Offersheeting talk is also huge.

To avoid potential playoff MVP raise? Huge.

All that is worth the 500k overpay, which is debatable anyways
These are all of the reasons you sign him for 8x9m in the offseason instead of signing him in the middle of the season.

Can we have som e clarification please. Will he be a UFA at the end of this deal?

Yes, this takes him right into being a UFA so he can sign a stupid rich deal.

I figured he would be about 12 million. So coming up a little light of that isn't too shabby for him.

Also if that is his rate then Marner should be 11-11.5.

I don't think Edmonton or Buffalo are. What players signed to 8 year contracts after their entry deals have their teams regretting it?

in actuality, why wouldn't Buffalo regret it? Eichel yaps about being a stud and whines that he has nobody to play with

The GM gave him a team this team and they still manage to creep out of the playoffs

mind you Islanders are sitting on top despite their issues, and the Devils had a good run last season too

what the hell is Buffalo's excuse? Eichel never cracked the 30 goal barrier either

so other than the greatest stud in the NHL McDavid

i don't see any team being overjoyed having to dish out $10m+ over 8years

Price
Kopitar
Doughty
Kane
Toews
Eichel
are all way too lengthy

i think 5yrs is perfect for Matthews

Just how much more of a raise would playoff MVP earn him?

How many players make more than Crosby who shouldnt?

it's called inflation.

Crosby signed in 2013-2014 for almost 9M, cap hit was around 60M
Mcdavid signed in 2018-2019 for 12.5M, cap hit will be almost 80M

do you kind of understand the inflation + why Crosby seem to have a " budget salary" but at the time it was HIGH.

I bash the Leaf at times . Mainly because they take shots at the Oilers and yet they been bad for like forever . Anyways we have no room to bash anyone

Matthews contract at 11.6 >>>>>>>>>> Lucic's at 6 million

Then there

Manning
Benning
Sekera just don't see him being the same
Kassian altho he is a decent player when he brings it . Just once every 10 games isn't enough

TML rebuild start after ours and the have left us in the dust . They deserve some praise . The few cocky fans deserve the bashing they get . Too bad their wasn't 2 levels on here , AHL level for the basher and NHL for the intelligent posters .

Did you guys expect an RFA to magically go to Arizona while the Leafs have full control over him? Everyone who said they expect him to go to Arizona after his contract is up and the fact that he only signed a 5 year deal straight to UFA could mean that. Imagine if Mcdavid had signed a 5 year deal you guys would all be pencilling him into your rosters by the end of the 5th year.
Offersheeted they thought. Numpty

We have him for 5... if he walks , so be it. If we haven't hoisted the main prize in less than 5 years... It was a failed build anyway.

I guess the pressure is now all on Marner to take Shanney's team friendly deal since Matthews and Nylander didn't.

Pretty crazy that Matthews on a 5 year contract is gonna be making 2m more per season than Kucherov who signed for the full 8 years.

Well there was a 6 year Cup drought in Pittsburgh that not so coincidentally ended with Murray's arrival. No more having to deal with Fleury fumbling pucks into his own net.

Is Murray more valuable to the Pens than Crosby or Malkin? Simple yes/no question.

Damn so he gets to pay Arizona taxes on the bonus?? How the hell didnt they get him at a lower Average if the Tampa guys all signed lower because of taxes. Does anyone know if this is true?

I get that and its good for matthews but this buy out proof narative is stupid. Matthews has a ZERO percent chance of being bought out before age 26. it just was never going to happen.

Its lockout proof.... a buyout is irrelevant at his age unless he falls off a cliff
