This should at least give a good idea about Marner. No way he makes for than Matthews and Tavares. I still thinks he gets 10-10.5. Unless he goes insane and gets 100pts

Like I said, I would have rather had Matthews for 8 years at $14 million over 5 years at $11.6 million if I was a Leafs fan. The extra $2 million a year is worth getting those 3 guaranteed years.

Can we have som e clarification please. Will he be a UFA at the end of this deal?
Yes he will

Wonder what this means for Marner as they have only 7mil in space for next season and 6 roster spots to fill.
Even if he takes a major discount (6-7mil) they have 5 spots to fill with whatever the cap increases by and considering signs don't point to him wanting to take a discount.... Should be an interesting next few months for the Leafs

What is everyone talking about saying that this takes him to UFA?

I thought UFA was after his 3rd contract for hitting age 27.

This contract does neither of those.
it depends... you need 7 years in the NHL (24 games per min if I recall correctly) or the age of 27 y/o

as for OP... at almost 12M I love that contract for the 30 other teams. They are the next cap hell team

Wrong. Pillow boy signed with Leafs not the other way around.
Nylander at 7M is a joke haha.
Mathews at second highest AAV who hasn’t cracked 70 points, for 5 years. Lol.
Gave an arm and a leg for Muzzin.
But no, he’s been great.

When GM’s were asked who they would start a franchise with they voted Matthews second to McDavid but yes keep that 70 point crap up.

This is absolute garbage all around. Dubas was not ready for this job what so ever.

Only thing that could make it worse is when the break down is announced and there is some stupid NMC in the final year

Paying Matthews an extra $2-$2.5 million a year is worth getting those 3 extra years of control, so I'm not sure why McKenzie is painting the term as a positive. I would have rather had the 3 extra years of Matthews at a stupid cap hit instead of paying him what he should have gotten on an 8 year deal for 5 years.

The Leafs need to fit guys in under next year’s cap. Originally a lot of people thought they’d have to take a step back next year to fit everyone, but with the Muzzin trade and this signing, it looks like they’ll be able to start next year with a better roster than they did this year.

Expecting lockouts based on contracts isn’t how this works. I would see a strike being more of an issue. The owners don’t care. 50% of revenue is 50% no matter how the players divide up their share.
It will be a lockout . But because of the players . Not a strike because that would mean the owners let them play without a cba which they won’t do because they would strike right before playoffs again.

The hate in this thread is intoxicating!! After a decade of watching the Leafs be the toilet bowl of the league, i'm going to sit back and enjoy the next 5 years.
3-years
in 3-years the Reilly & Andersen GOAT contracts are up and that's when fun really beings.

As a Leaf fan:

I love Matthews, kid is legit

That said, I hate this contract.

Seems like Matthews got a high AAV with a sweetheart deal that takes him right to UFA. We lost on both fronts IMO.

If he wanted a five year deal it should have been under 10. If he wanted to touch 12M AAV it should have been for 8 years.
I'm in the same boat. Matthew's is an elite player but he got everything he possibly could have wanted with this deal. Dubas had better have a plan to move some money out because moving forward, he still has to sign Marner.

that's a lot of money for ppg player. makes draistl at 8 look pretty damn sweet now. this kid better hit 100 points consistanly and stay healthy or this will be bad. at 5 years I suspect it gives him options .either he can stay or leave. makes me wonder if he truly wants to stay in TO. in the end he's looking out for himself and wants to get paid to boot .1 life. makes mcdavids contract look pretty damn sweet now

thing is Dermott isn't going to make 800k forever.

If he becomes a great contributor, he's gonna need a significant raise after next year.

Just like Reilly will need essentially double the money in 3-years and Andersen with command probably a 50% raise at minimum in 2-years.
that's true, RFA dman deals have been much more reasonable than forwards and particularly centers recently though, and the Leafs have Marleau's contract expiring after next year plus presumably cap inflation

Andersen may not be here at all at the end of his contract, we have a couple of goalie prospects that are advancing and may be ready by then

and I agree that cap management becomes a major portion of any contender's list of obstacles, but the response you quoted was specifically in regards to "who plays defense for the Leafs next year other than Rielly/Muzzin?"

If Matthews went off for 1.5 PPG over 4 rounds like he could?

That's an extra million right there

And then imagine how much of an increase he is looking at 6 years from now? Tavares got DOUBLE what he was paid coming off his ELC on his UFA contract. And that was with ONE playoff series win over the course of those 6 years.

They don't get all the signing bonuses in the 1st year, just on July 1st of that year. So its like $10-million up front once per year (or whatever the signing bonuses are, I haven't seen the structure).
I dont think its a bad deal, and likely its going to become more commonplace...Players seem less likely to want to lose out on any potential money to be earned...By locking in at a fixed rate for 8 seasons...That being said the trade market will start to be alot more busy

I’d take Matthews and his contract over Eichel’s and his any day. I imagine most GMs would do the same.

No, Matthews is UFA after 5 years.

Eichel is signed and locked, Matthews just wanted the quick buck and he is out town in 5 years.
Why would he be UFA after the 5 years if he wanted to stay in Toronto ?
