Seems like he plays a lot of games?

Exactly.. Yet this guy seems to think he's going to be a regular healthy scratch within a year, because he's going to a worse team.. Seems odd to me.

I'm hoping he can play opposite wing to komarov and they can be a line that infuriates. If he can hold his job on a much better islanders team, should have no problem fitting in on a terrible, terrible Toronto team.
Thanks for the insight, btw

People saying he'll be a healthy scratch are absurd. He's incredibly durable for such a physical player and can change the momentum of a game on the energy of a single shift. You don't get a player that can do as much as he can for $1M anymore, simple as that.

Ah, another free agent season in Toronto. Just another $10m fourth-liner and a bag of broken dreams.

[EDIT] Kind of similar to our free agent seasons here in LA, come to think of it.

Any team that relies on UFA to build their team is screwed long-term. LA's brilliance was gained through drafting, development and key trades...and that's what Toronto's trying to accomplish too.

I don't think this is a crippling contract. It's not good, but it could be a lot worse. Kris Russell would be a game-changer; if we sign him, the honeymoon is over and we really haven't learned a damn thing.

Matt Martin is a valuable player but in the right role. The role he had on the Islanders was perfect, but I do like Chimera's contract better.

Take good care of him.

We're the same fanbase that loved Darcy Tucker and Tie Domi. Toronto fans love guys like Martin.

Martin and Komarov. Man that's a pain of a team to play against. Not easy to play looking over your shoulder all the time.

I like it. I agree 2 years/2.5mil would be way better but it's moveable still. And to the leaf fans saying its .500k too much, give me a break. 500k isn't going to break the leafs Cap. hell, our current 4th line winger (Greening) is making 2.6 and no one batted an eye.
He is going to become an instant fan favourite in that building. And to all the pissed off leaf fans, you'll be chanting for him when you need someone to step up for the kids. Enjoy the ride! He's fun to watch

Signing is bad only because its the Leafs who made it. Gives the team much needed grit and when the time comes he'll fetch us a decent draft pick.

No one's trading for Martin attached to a 4-year deal for at least 2 years, if not 3 or 4. After 3-4 years, I would hope we'd be in the position of needing guys like Martin in the playoffs in the first place.

$2.5 million is basically chump change. Funny how people get worked up about that.

Exactly. Also have to keep in mind the Leafs had to outbid contending teams who covet guys like Lucic but wanted the next best thing for their 4th line. The Leafs were able to pay a little extra because they can without any concern whatsoever. Astute signing no question.

He'll hit everything that moves, pot a goal here and there and provide a foundation of toughness for the plethora of young skilled players the Leafs have. Also, there's little doubt Martin will go into the expansion draft because the Leafs have almost no guys to actually put up in the draft to meet the requirements, and is unlikely to be picked up at that. If he does, ok no harm done, if not all the better. I can't see Vegas grabbing a 2.5mil veteran grinder when they are building from scratch.

Solid all around. I'm thrilled about this signing.

we didn't sign greening:facepalm: and everyone can't wait till his contract ends..
as others have said no one has problems with his intensity, and that he will have a positive effect on the team, but this is an overpayment in both term and years.

If someone want to run nylander they will, who is afraid of matt martin.. also when will they be on the ice together.

Except he's a $2.5 million cap hit. Nice try though.

Please explain why the term and aav are a problem for the Leafs? I think that they paid him just enough so that he's unappealing to contenders and Vegas but little enough that he's of no significance to their overall plan. How is this bad exactly?

I thought he'd get 3 million or more, and long term since he's pretty young. Not sure what his motivation is for going to Toronto but it's a good deal.

Tough, but a really good hockey player. Great signing.

Tough, and an adequate hockey player. Good signing.

Let's not overhype the deal. He's a 4th line player (not a borderline 3rd as someone said), who hits everything in sight, and doesn't suck. Nothing bad about that. Great team guy (not hyperbole). Players will love him even more than the fans. But he's a 4th liner for a reason, and will not be a difference maker. Fair contract that won't hurt the team, so it's all good, but don't expect more than you see.

Looking at the fancy stats, it seems he has grown considerably from the player he was in 2013, to the player he is now in almost every stat.

He's now a positive relative possession player, offense is growing, OPPCF% has lowered...

Leafs fans that are outraged at this signing need to give their head a shake. Sure it may be a slight over payment and maybe a year too long but the leafs arent going to be in a cap crunch anytime soon. May not like it, but outraged? Cmon boys...
