We actually only had 6 guys on our team last year with 10 or more goals (and that includes PAP and Lupul). To get 10 goals on the 4th line is pretty good.

True but 4 years WTF

You make it sound like negotiating with players and agents is easy peasy...get real. The 1-2 yr deals that you're apparently fond off usually comes when most teams blow their wads and players become alot more open minded to their limited options.

Bad short sighted move with long term consequences for the Leafs. I'd wager he won't dress in a single playoff game for the Leafs.

Paying a player who's horrible at keeping possession, horrible offensively, and bad defensively 2,5m is always bad, let alone giving him this term

Give it a year...

He's been a regular for the isles, a good team, for awhile now. Why will he be a healthy scratch on a significantly worse Leafs team within a year? He's good at what he does. He's not putting up 10 goals or some **** like that. He hits, forechecks well, and agitates. Get over it, $2.5m is hardly an overpayment, almost any isles fan would tell you this deal is pretty fair.

In all honesty the only TRUE 4th liner on that 4th line, was Martin. He probably held back Zeek and Clutterbuck. Those two are very capable of playing 3rd line minutes. Martin is kinda slow and has bad hands...but he was a great kid here. I will miss him. AMAZING in the community. You guys will love him for that. Just a good dude who plays hard and uses his talents to the max...which is 4th line, outstanding teammate, and apparently $10mil. Good for him. Enjoy Sidney if she comes up there with him too. :naughty:

Matty Marts is a warrior. $2.5 was what he was rumored to get and the boy can check like in the video games. Just because he was a 4th liner on the Isles doesn't mean he isn't capable of being a 3rd liner on the Leafs.

Too much money for too long, but he brings an element we need so I'm not going to lose sleep over it. It's not as bad as the Backes or Ladd contracts IMO.

If we sign the traffic cone that masquerades as Kris Russell, however, it's going to be Clarkson all over again. Dave Nonis would make that signing.

When he's a regular healthy scratch he's actually overpaid by 2.5 million

When has he been a regular healthy scratch?

$2.5 million is basically chump change. Funny how people get worked up about that.

I'm hoping he can play opposite wing to komarov and they can be a line that infuriates. If he can hold his job on a much better islanders team, should have no problem fitting in on a terrible, terrible Toronto team.
Thanks for the insight, btw

Ah, another free agent season in Toronto. Just another $10m fourth-liner and a bag of broken dreams.

[EDIT] Kind of similar to our free agent seasons here in LA, come to think of it.

I think this is an alright signing. Adding a good sandpaper guy who can play hockey and chip in some points is a valuable piece to have on the team. Will definitely help take some of the load off our younger guys.

Can you tell us what else happens in a year please?
You honestly sound like one of those people that go on every single Facebook post about the Leafs and complains about every single trade/signing lmao

I don't use facebook so I'll take your word for it, what's going to happen next year, Leafs finish in the bottom five of the league.

Anything else?

2.5 million for a stiff that plays 5 minutes a game....
