You realize all of the TB contracts are cheaper because they have no state tax. The leafs are the highest taxed team in the league. There is a tax calculator on Cap Friendly you can play with.

Logic doesn't hold up. There are 4 other teams in the league in 0-income tax states, and none of them have the abundance of team-friendly contracts that Tampa does.

Pretty sure Montreal players pay more tax.

Toronto is also one of the few teams that can afford to give huge signing bonus money. Matthews bonus this year 15.2, next year 15.2. Marners bonus 15.3 this year, 14.3 next year.
JT bonus money this year 15.25, next year 14.99. Yet no consideration by the players or agents for that upfront money.

In fact because Matthews is an American resident he pays only 15% of his bonus money in Canadian tax. And he couldn't give us a bit friendlier deal?????

Oh...the ole' "no state tax"

How about being paid american while living in Canada? There is something to that.

1 American = 1.32 Canadian.

How about drastically higher merch earnings potential?

How about free health care? Lower crime rates? No Trump?

How about getting most of your contract money dumped in your account upfront in signing bonuses?

How about the chance to play (and win) for the Toronto Maple Leafs? One of the most storied franchises in the league? The team you "cheered for" growing up?

How about being a reasonable ****ing person and understanding how hard cap is a thing and the math isn't hard.

No state tax isn't an excuse.

So you agree players for the Leafs should give the team more friendly deals?

EDIT: As a Leafs fan I did laugh at the "storied franchise in the league" FIFTY + years of sucking big time does not define storied franchise.

You really can’t compare the two until after 3 years. Well see how much Point is getting in 3 years. I’d guess it’s going to be a lot more than Marners contract

And the 2 will get again helluva lot more in 2-3 years than Point.

Matthews got only 2 more years and makes almost 5 million more per season, by % that's crazy considering Points work in the NHL.

I think every damn super star should understand that math is a thing and the cap is hard. Which means the more you take the less can be used to fill out the team around you and then before you know it, you are in your mid 30's and looking to sign somewhere/anywhere that you can for cheap to finally get your name on the cup.

Why I get to use the word "storied"

- 100 + year history
- second most Stanley cup championships
- largest fan base

Yes. Storied. Only Montreal has a stronger history.

so do you trade Marner instead ? because one of the four will have to go

Don't worry. The defense will have to go.

Likely sign Muzz, lose Barrie and bridge Durmot. Not sure about Ceci...guess he goes as well?

I'll give you the biggest fan base. And I'll expand it to the most loyal fan base, somewhat, unfortunately, delusion fan base too. (not saying you are)

Second most cups? irrelevant today as they were won in a 6 team league. In fact, that's embarrassing too. Should have been more.
100+ history...half which the team has been run by idiots.

Someone has to go.

We have one defense signed next summer and the bar for stars on this team appears to be 11 mil.

So good luck with that.

We have Muzzin is already making 4+ million and Cody Ceci certainly won't be making 4.5 million on the Maple Leafs next season.

Sandin looks like he's NHL ready already, or at the very least very, very close.

It's far more likely you see Kapanen or Johnsson packing their bags than Willie, provided he has the kind of year he's capable of.

You don't get to shit on the Leaf's cups or call it irelivant. That's why we track history.

There is a reason why the Leafs and Montreal won all the cups back then and Boston, Chicago and the Rangers did not. It deserves respect.

Don't you dare try and sell me on your theory craft as to how Muzzin will only ask for 4.5 to stay on Toronto.

It's as a laughable as assuming Marner was going to sign for 9.5 this summer.

There is what players sign for everywhere else and then there is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Will we be able to re-sign Barrie for 9+
I don't think he will break 50 pts this year with the secondary role on the PP and so I have him in the 7.5-8 range. If not him then we try to find someone else but the money is there

Sorry, it is irrelevant. We had more eyes in the communities to be able to sign young players. That helped us tremendously. Well, except how we f***ed up big time with Bobby Orr and Brad Park. LOL

As for Montreal. French Canadian kids wanted to play for Le Canadiens, today they want as far away from Montreal as possible.
