Kyle Dubas:

Signed Nylander late, somewhat screwed up

Signed Auston Matthews in the middle, screwed up

Signed Mitch Marner early, a complete disaster

I'd say he over paid Willie by abour 2-300k

He drastically overpaid Matthews considering the term by about 2 mil

He drastically over paid Marner by about 1.5 mil.

Considering Stamkos stayed in Tampa for 9.5, that's an over pay on Tavares by about 1.5 mil as well.

1.5 + .3 + 2 + 1.5 = 5.3 mil.

Considering the cap isn't going up anytime soon. Our window is this year and after that to keep a piece we will need to lose a pieces.

but according to many of my fellow Leaf fans Dubas is the greatest GM in the history of the game

then again the majority of my board was also saying Burke was doing a great job as well when he was our GM , lol

Except Tavares was offered more by other teams.

My point is that saying he overpaid is pretty silly given that he paid less than Tavares was offered elsewhere.

You don't have a point if his comparable decided to stay and sign for less ignoring all other offers.

he wants to win. Tavares wants to get paid.

Tavares came here because he wants to win. He left NYI because he wants to win. It's not like Tavares also left Tampa.

If he wants to win he would have signed for something more reasonable than 11, knowing there is a damn salary cap.

What was his mantra? He didn't want to add through subtraction? Ya. That's not gonna happen now. He clearly set a locker room standard of 11.. This clearly impacted Matthews, Marner and Nylander. And now to keep a piece we will need to lose a piece.

I'm looking at Rielly, Andersen and the like.

So addition by subtraction.

This year is our window. Enjoy!

You sound fun.

You sound fun.

you sound like you are struggling to paint a bright picture on to what has actually happened in the last few years, contract wise.

This will honestly all play out much more clearly and harder for you to brush off when you see Toronto UFA's leave while Tampa's and the like stay.

Just let it all play out as it will.

You realize all of the TB contracts are cheaper because they have no state tax. The leafs are the highest taxed team in the league. There is a tax calculator on Cap Friendly you can play with.

Good post

Stammer signed for 8.5m because he wanted to stay with a cup contending team and win .

JT wanted to play on a contender but still wanted his cash , Dubas foolishly thought he could talk the kids into taking less to make up for him overpaying JT and leave cap on the table for the rest of the roster .

they all f***ed the fool hard to varying degrees

I see us having a core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares signed for at least five more seasons (with a supporting cast up front also signed long term), and that to me is among the best in the league. I agree with your point about Rielly and Andersen but to be honest none of us expected Dubas to go to out and acquire pieces like Muzzin and Barrie while also signing the three kids long term, so I am fine to wait for the next few years before whining on the internet and acting like the world is ending. Your whole schtick with comments like "enjoy!" and "you are struggling" as if you come from the future and know better than anyone is just lame.

how come the rest of the non state tax teams don't get there players to also sign for discounts ?

Marner wanted the Point contact ... Leafs didn't wanna go back to the table in 3years with a agent threatening UFA and wanting max dollars. It's that simple.

Point may make less total than marner over a 6 year span... but he also may make it playing on another team in year 5 and 6.

We have our guys locked for a certain window.... if we dont win in that window, I'll gladly say it was a failed Dubas era

That issue is negligible when you take into account the signing bonuses paid out by Toronto and they are paid in American dollars

Oh...the ole' "no state tax"

How about being paid american while living in Canada? There is something to that.

1 American = 1.32 Canadian.

How about drastically higher merch earnings potential?

How about free health care? Lower crime rates? No Trump?

How about getting most of your contract money dumped in your account upfront in signing bonuses?

How about the chance to play (and win) for the Toronto Maple Leafs? One of the most storied franchises in the league? The team you "cheered for" growing up?

How about being a reasonable f***ing person and understanding how hard cap is a thing and the math isn't hard.

No state tax isn't an excuse.
