You are one of the people who made that claim. The first assist was much more a thing of beauty than the pizza he served up to Scherwey. Nice one -timer though!

I mean he is obviously overpayed and it sucks but its done and now we just get to hope hes great for the next 6 years, but also make little jokes when he coughs it up like that in a preseason game.

Are we picking on game one of preseason? lol all players are bags of **** the first few games.

Matthews wasn't ;). But yeah obviously these games mean nothing but im still going to make jokes about he sweet assists.

Marner's gift did have some affect- Sens didn't dress Zaitsev tonight.

What people here should look at is percentage of cap not dollars then they will see it's fair for marner Matthew's and nylander compared to mcdavid and others

Tell that to the posters who fume every time someone says Matthews isn’t a top 10 forward yet...
McDavid, Matthews, McKinnon. The 3 M's. I'm pretty sure that if anyone is asked, those are the 3 players they'd pick to start a franchise with. Maybe a guy like Barkov slips in there, but the list is pretty short.

Not so fast. I would easily take Kucherov over Matthews.

Winnipeg balances this out by paying 36-38 year old Blake Wheeler $8.5 mil a year at which point he'll likely be worth half that at best.

Not even that... I've seen other posts where fans have said that the deal, that a player from the team they support, will look like a steal in a few years and still spout off on how the Leafs are overpaying their players. It's not like I'm looking for objective opinions from main board posters at this point, but I wish they'd be a little less hypocritical.

I am not really willing to judge these contracts until someone comparable actually signs a similar deal.

No one so far has signed for this much term at this value level from the current crop of outstanding UFAs.

If Rants or Point sign 6 years 8 million, sure, I will be all over that. Aho was close, but still only 5 years, and I would definitely call that a better contract, but not a hugely better contract. That 1 year is a difference maker.

Really? TO start a franchise, you take a winger? This isn't fantasy hockey you know...
Yes, when the winger is much better than the center. I would take McDavid over Kucherov, for sure, but not Matthews. You know, just because a player plays center, it doesn't automatically make him a better choice for starting a franchise than any winger.

You know, just because a player in his prime in a highly advantageous situation puts up more points than a player on his ELC in a highly disadvantageous situation, it doesn't automatically make him a better choice for starting a franchise.

Sure, you can convince yourself of anything if you really want to believe it.

Starting a franchise you would take 26 year old winger Kucherov over a big franchise C that just turned 22 a couple days ago? You do realize the age players typically peak these days right? Not to mention we almost certainly haven't seen the best of Matthews yet. If he's already this good at that age, what is he going to look like 2 years from now? Kucherov had exactly 18 career NHL points at this stage of Matthews' career.

If teams have more than 1 does that offset the teams that don't have any?
No I'd just like to see his list of players who are in the conversations for Norris, since he believes "every team has at least one".

Reality is I know (as does everyone else) that he's just full of it and pulling things out his posterior to goad people.

Reality is the Norris is largely linked to offense. Over the past decade 9/10 winners were 60+ point players. 19/30 finalists were 60+ point players. 25/30 finalists were 50+ point players . Only 44 d-men have put up 50+ points in the past decade and only 18 players have put up 60+ points in that time.

So his list needs to start with d-men realistically capable of 50+ points. It happens on average 9 times per year. Toronto has 2 of them, as does San Jose. Should be fun coming up with one per team.

For the record , points alone doesn't mean you will be in the conversations (see Barrie) but history dictates the absence of such very nearly excludes you from them.
