Yes, the space was put to good use to sign those 3 kids long term to keep the team a contender long term
I'm sure the assumption that the kids would take mild discounts or fair deals, long term. Both Matthews and Marner are groundbreaking RFA deals when you consider the cap hit and length of the deals for their respective positions.

Its kind of like Subbans deal back in the day. He signed it what, 5 years ago and its still not great value today.

What an overpayment lol.

If leafs dont win this year they are screwed. Muzzin will be gone, Barrie will be gone and the defense will be dog shit once again.

They have moveable pieces if they need to make room for a defenceman should Muzzin / Barrie walk.

So lets see...

- Laine is firing off shots at his coach and linemates, giving comments about not caring if he returns to Winnipeg.

- Rantanen has joined Laine in Europe and reports are the teams are far apart and not talking.

- Point is still unsigned, and reports are they are not close either.

Meanwhile, it's been a week since Marner signed, he is in training camp, and playing games, and you guys STILL are here.

The excuse was always he would set the market, and yet these other stories are dead. Had Marner said those things, a thread would have been filled within 3 hours.

You guys just enjoy hating the Leafs, and it's transparent in the traffic negative or problematic Leafs topics generates from other fans.

Go talk about those other doom and gloom threads and let this die for god sakes.

I wish it was possible to avoid all this leafs stuff. Unfortunately you go read a thread about a player signing for a different team (Carlo for immediate example), and there’s a bunch of leafs fans in there talking about the leafs to a point where the mods have to come in, post a warning about the thread not being about the leafs and delete half the posts.

It’s not easy for fans of other teams to avoid talking about the leafs when some (not all) of the fans of your team bring them up in unrelated threads.

You sure about that? Becuase if you go and check the thread, like all the others, it was all started by "neutral" fans bringing up the Leafs and Dubas as a way of trying to take a shot at the team, which brings in fans who will defend it, and derails the thread.

Just like 99% of Leaf threads made on the main board or other fan bases trying to stir the pot.

personally I can't wait to watch Canucks fans meltdown when Barrie re-signs with Toronto

Life is probably more fun drinking paint while wearing a Wendel Clark jersey, I know.

If you're drinking paint then I suggest you stop no matter who's sweater you're wearing or how much fun you're having.

This contract still boggles my mind. He will have a very hard time living up to it. I doubt it will ever be a "value" deal.

Based on today's values probably not but if the cap goes up, possibly in the last couple of years of the deal. But yeah, it's hard to outperform the deal when you're getting paid top dollar, no doubt about it.

I remember leafs fans berating McDavid's contract when he signed it, calling him 'McGreedy', and leafs fans ridiculing Draisaitl's contract, saying he's just McDavid's shotgun. Today, both contracts are absolute steals, and they both signed for max term. Both will be past their prime when their contract expires, so they won't warrant a huge extension compared to if they were a UFA 2 years earlier. Regardless of leafs fans pestering McDavid to request a trade, both him and Draisaitl are loyal as hell.

When you generalise like this, you lose all credibility. There are millions of Leaf fans and they never agree on anything.

I'd guess that the reaction to those contracts was roughly the same among fans everywhere. The Drasaitl contract was considered to be an overpayment but now it's viewed as a good deal. And it was widely knows that McD took a discount, I don't recall anyone calling him greedy.

Value comes from players getting better and the cap going up. If they could of got both AM & MM at max term that would of been great but from the position of negotiation it seems like Dubas did well enough with MM(does not seem like any of the young guns wanted to do the team a favour).

With AM however I'd be worried he will bolt out of town as soon as the contract expires.

No real reason to worry about that. Star players rarely leave their teams in their prime. And CLB isn't in great shape now, they might not even have a team then so this isn't really even on the radar.

I'm sure the assumption that the kids would take mild discounts or fair deals, long term. Both Matthews and Marner are groundbreaking RFA deals when you consider the cap hit and length of the deals for their respective positions.

Are you generalising again? I'd say most Leaf fans were hoping for discounts but few were counting on it.

Nothing else to say to this, enjoy your dreams I guess.

Lol Toronto's by far in the best shape of any Canadian team right now and the peanut gallery is still in here trying to tell us how screwed we are

I'm not talking about Leafs fans assumptions, I'm talking about the assumptions of Tavares and Leafs management when he signed the FA deal.

Yeah, that’s not the case.

The very first comments in the thread about the Leafs were people crapping on Dubas and the Leafs, well before any Leaf fans chimed in. I read it from the first couple of posts before any intervention was needed.

Its hilarious how these folks bring up the Leafs in every thread, and if a Leafs fan responds to it its all woe is me "stop talking about the Leafs!".

"But next year you might lose half of your defense due to the cap"

*Winnipeg literally loses half of their defense due to the cap*

*Crickets*
And their RFA's aren't even in camp either! My god if that shit was going down in Toronto half the threads on the main board would be about it.

Again, the comments have been deleted. The first one was by Koyvoo, a leafs fan. Then a bunch of other ones saying it's a bad deal by the Bruins and how Dubas had locked his core in.

The mod didn't make that post for no reason.

I'm willing to bet if TSN and Sportsnet were both based in Colorado, we'd be hearing a lot more about Rantanen than Marner.

But the fact that every notable "analyst" or "insider" is based in or around Toronto is a pretty telling reason as to why this summer's RFA crop was basically seen as "Marner and the gang".....and why there were dozens of threads on here about Marner alone. Same thing happened with Nylander last year.
I'm willing to bet if they were based in Colarado they'd go bankrupt.

Now I believe you're the one making assumptions (this is nothing more than speculation).

Unless you can provide a source?

I think it's even worse than that. I believe I heard on the radio that out of the 5 Dmen who played in over half the games last season, only 1 is still standing (pending big Buff). I feel so bad for WPG fans, that's a team I'm always rooting for. Gotta a love a fan base that is that passionate about their team.

And their RFA's aren't even in camp either! My god if that **** was going down in Toronto half the threads on the main board would be about it.

No kidding, the board would probably be crashing on a daily basis.

I agree. I feel bad for the fans, but there is a part of me that is happy to see it happen to a small handful on this board. But I am sure we all feel like that about most teams.

I think all three of those players have GMs who are trying to keep their salaries in check. Laine's relationship with the Jets has been strained for a while, and might have more to do with Maurice than contract talks.

Either all three of these GMs cave and Dubas comes out looking great, or all three of them don't, or something in between.

My guess is: Rantanen signs a big deal, something around 10m; Point signs a bridge deal that makes Toronto's head explode; and Laine is traded to a team who might be so desperate for a scoring winger that they give him Marner money. So it winds up a wash for Dubas.
