So surely that signals a trade for one of their major forwards, if not now then in the summer at least. Can't have 47.5M tied up in five players and expect to keep that balance.

His deal is not bad at face value. The question is... is it worth it for the Leafs. No it isn't. Have you guys not seen your playoff performances? You need a legit all purpose number 1. Rielly is absolutely not that. The only other way to win with Rielly is if you win by committee on defense, but that will be hard to do with the way your cap structured on offense. Unless Marner is traded for a steal return that includes a young and cheap solid defender and great top 6 player, this deal does nothing for the Leafs. Leafs will not win with Rielly.

I hear what you're saying but look back at any of those series and Rielly wasn't ever even close to being a problem.

They snuck in to play a Washington team that won the Cup the following year.

Boston was all Jake Gardiner, but I can see how you're confused - they're quite similar, just Gardiner has a better shot and Rielly isn't afraid of his own shadow.

CBJ had insane goaltending and Gavrikov and Werenski were good.

Montreal, whatever happened there, he was the best D man on either team.

7.5 is a fine rate for an okay #1/excellent #2.

On Marner we agree, but that has nothing to do with this thread.

Pleasantly surprised. I like it. I was worried they were going to lose another UFA for nothing.

it’s smart to just have a few key players. That way if they get cold in the playoffs, you might lose but oh well. I doubt that would happen.

dumb to have a well rounded team with depth

There are all different kinds of teams out there, built differently from each other. In spite of your massive ego, thinking YOU know the right way to do it, its done every which way.

The Leaf's core was filled with 22/23/24 year olds last year. Sometimes, the kids need some time to figure things out.

No one, 1 mill cap ceiling rise with 1.2 mill of Kessel retention coming off the books is 2.2 of the 2.5 mill we need to cover this raise.
Spezza can’t be a great 4C forever, Sandin pay raise, Campbell big pay raise.

Again, who goes?

This is also addressing that the team is not well constructed as is…

9 Forwards signed for next year: Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Ritchie, Kampf, Bunting, Simmonds
Total: 49.855

5 Dmen:
Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie, Holl, Dermott
Total: 21.625

1 Goalie:
Mrazek
Total: 3.800

Grand total: 75.280 (6.220 cap space)

Needs:
3 forwards
1 defenceman
1 goalie

Lets say they re-sign Spezza and call up two forwards:
Spezza - 0.750
Rodion - 0.925
Robertson - 0.797
Total: 2.472

Leaving 3.748 for Campbell and Sandin
They would also lose Mikheyev to UFA, and I'm not sure what they do with RFAs Liljegren, Kase, or Engvall.

They pretty much have to get rid of someone. Ritchie would be a good bet. Mrazek too. Both of them clears up 6.200 which would go a long way.

Kerfoot with no salary back pretty much covers it. Or Holl + Mikheyev + Engvall

They only need enough to cover Campbell's raise, and maybe some change for Lilly, Kase and Sandin

Sandin is going to get what? A few 100k?

Campbell is likely to get 2-2.5 mill?

They could easily bring back the same team minus Kerfoot with Robertson in his place.

We are also 7 games into a season, so maybe cool it on the team not being well constructed.

11 pages until it devolved into the Sens with little brother syndrome and the combative leaf homer having a pissing match. Better than expected.

You know Du(m)bas(s) made on ok signing when the talk is not about the contract and all about "lol Leafs cap structure". Ya it'll be funny as hell to see how things shake down, still a good signing, still much better than him walking or getting rental player bag of parts trade deadline value.

It’s been three years of a poorly top heavy team.

Why in the world is a #1G getting a $2M contract? If he’s playing badly enough to only get $2M then you guys aren’t going anywhere .

Same for Sandin, if you really want to compete you’d hope he’s doing better than a $500k raise…

LOL. What "salary cap issues"? I keep hearing about how we will never find the money for Marner, or Matthews, or Reilly, or (insert name here) but we keep on signing all of them. And our bottom six guys are doing just fine, thanks.

We have no cap issues at all. We've got everyone we currently want, SIGNED. Campbell is likely next. Tell us all how we'll never find the money/space to sign him. :)
So you did not want Hyman?
Weird, I really like his game.

The star players not showing up when it matters doesnt mean the team is poorly constructed. Where do you reallocate money if you downgrade from the top heavy construction? The depth has been good, the D has been good, the stars just went quite 3 years in a row at the worst possible time.

As for Campbell a 2 mill raise is 3.5-4 mill contract

Sandin isnt going to command a huge raise after 1 season playing limited 3rd pairing minutes. Hes still under RFA controll for 6 more years...

LOL. Uh huh. You know best, eh? Got it.
It’s not about who knows best. This is simple mathematics. 58.9% of an NHL cap to 5 players, who unlike Tampa’s core, which may see a similar cap issue next season, don’t produce when the games mean something is an awful cap approach.

You ignoring the cheesy depth/goaltending options that is given to this core because of cap restraints, and typing as may caps-locked LMAOs or LOLs only further proves that you’re seeing this only through an emotional bond to the team that clouds logical thought.

This core is 0-8 in playoffs.

If Campbell proves he's a capable #1, his salary probably will be in the $5-ish million range. Especially when you consider he's almost 30 years old and hasn't had a chance to really cash in yet, so he might view the next payday as his best chance to land the contract to set him up for life.

Unless Campbell completely shits the bed the rest of the season you're dreaming thinking he's going to sign for that little.
