No player in the NHL can play at McDavids level.
That's probably true. But, Matthews is being paid more than McDavid & for that matter, more than any player in the league. So, the expectations for AM are set at the highest level and includes absolute domination in the playoffs.

What contract term is he looking at when this is up? He will be 31 at that time.

Is he looking at a raise in the aav for a full seven years until he's 38?

It would seem the most financial sense. Even if he breaks down near the end of it, then he could go on LTIR and still be paid.

In your head
Leafs got taken to the cleaners by a guy that's allergic to showing up in the playoffs but at least you can celebrate him not going to the Coyotes and taking them to the cleaners instead
Could be worse

Leafs could have gotten Nick Suzuki'd

The mistake here was Dubas only getting 5 years from Matthews when McDavid and Eichel signed for 8 years.

If Matthews had signed for 8 years at 11.64, this would have been a fair deal lining him up right behind McDavid at 12.5 and in front of Eichel at 10M. With that contract still in effect today.

But If you factor in this most recent deal at 13.25 for the next 3 years because of the Dubas mistake of not getting 8 years.

Matthews AVV for 8 years would average out at 12.30M .Just 20M shy of McDavid. As many have noted, McDavid has no comparables. But Matthews is being paid McDavid money. Matthews and Matthews agent could write a took on how to a team in this case the Leafs to the cleaners. With Mercenary efficiency.

Everyone is so concerned about him Re signing.

If it’s so bad, isn’t that a good thing for all non leaf fans?

If Matthews shouldnt be compared to McDavid he shouldn’t be getting McDavid money.
McDavid is now making Matthews money instead of what he should be making which is 15-17 million. Mcdavid is now underpaid as the money changes for superstars. If he had signed a 5 year deal like Matthews he would be making more money now but it will all be straightened out in a few more seasons

people can blab all they want for 81 pages.

But why? Matthews got paid. I didn't want him to walk. How overpaid is he? Overpaid by like 2 4th line scrubs? I'm not sure.

Yeah, the Leafs suck, always have and always will. Matthews is worth every penny to me. He's something to watch that is really entertaining............because we're gonna f it up regardless of who is on the team.

I think there are quite a few fanbases out there who would take Matthews on this contract in a heartbeat.

Get rid of Marner though, and don't be giving Willy anything over $9m per.

There's a hot take :D
If Leaf fans are happy with the contract then who gives a shit what other fanbases have to say

I actually don’t care who or where he signed. I am more interested in how Matthews and his agent negotiated with a franchise in this case the Leafs to have him paid essentially what McDavid is paid while not being on the same tier as Mcdavid by out negotiating Dubas to a 5 year deal when players like Eichel and Mcdavid were signing 8 year deals. You do the math 13.64 x 5 + 13.25 x 3(4) = 12.20M cap hit when Mcdavid’s 8 year deal expires. One can argue Matthews and his Agents were masterful in negotiations. They managed to get the Leafs to pay Matthews Mcdavid money when Mcdavid has no peers in the NHL most agree.

Yep, still missing it.
I think you’re missing the fact that Matthews is the first to set a trend of all star players maximizing their value. It’s smart for Matthews cause he can go for a big 7-8 year deal after this one and the leafs get to reassess everything in 5 years when he’s in his early 30s

I think the contract is fine although obviously a longer term deal would have been preferable, which the Leafs preferred.
The bigger issue is tying up so much if the cap in four forwards. Once Nylander re-signs those four forwards will once again be the four highest players on the team. That formula has yet to be successful in the cap era. Wasting two more years of the players prime until Tavares’ contract expires doesn’t seem like the ideal solution to the cap allocation issue. Maybe trading Nylander is the only viable solution?

The first of many. Buckle up and don’t be afraid of change
Nylander, Marner and Matthews already did this once. Take a look at the top paid players in the league. It’s a pretty small minority of prime age players taking less than max years. Unless you’re a Maple Leaf, then it’s all of them.

For now. Like I said this is going to start being more of the norm over the next few years for superstars.

4 posts in here says you do care. You’re curious, because there’s still some leaf fan in you and it appears to have upset you.

I do agree that it should’ve been 8. But thems the brakes.
