Very good deal for Toronto, they have Matthews for everyone of his prime years. We'll see 5 years from now if it's worth re-signing him but that's a long way off. Very happy this wasn't for 8 years.

To all the experts that said he was gone - you have shown that you know nothing, please stop polluting the board with your posts. If you had a shred of integrity you will leave forever

It’s hilarious that Leafs fans do the exact same thing with players like McDavid but lack the self awareness to realize this fact.

Why do you assume the Leafs won’t go all in with re-signing him?

What if you are paying him 15M at 34, you happy with that?

Why do you assume the Leafs will go all in with re-signing him?

You keep pushing out ridiculous scenarios assuming the Leafs have to re-sign him even higher after the age of 30.

The Leafs let Sundin walk because he wanted too much after 30, they could do the same with Matthews.

Lol going off of just one season.

In this scenario scheifele is just as good a goal scorer as MacKinnon because they had the same amount of goals last year.

Show me where Matthews hurt you

At 2 years younger I would say he absolutely is and being a Center definitely justifiable.

This isnt between a 20 and 18 year old. Matthews isnt getting any better, hes peaked. If anything it looks like pasternak is a late bloomer.

Ya and look how well it worked out for the leafs after sundin left.

Absolutely squeezing as much money out of the team as he can.

I'd get this deal after a career season. But after a down year? How can he have the leverage?

It worked out really good. They went from missing the playoffs every year to rebuilding.

Do you think they should have squeezed a few more 9th place finishes in? It was absolutely the right decision.

So dumb of a take that players are asking for more money because everything cost more.....sure.

I never compared and NHL player to regular people, its the context Hate to break it to you but everyone feels cost of living

Appreciate your input though, as we just watch moving forward players will demand more.
Again, you fail to comprehend how the players are paid.

And Sundin was offered something like two years at $14 million per year by Vancouver but only took a one year deal. A class act.

He obviously didn’t want to be in Vancouver.

He said he wanted to stay with the Leafs and had no interest in Vancouver but they were throwing money at him - so he did it as a favour to the Sedin’s.

Problem with Matthews and other forwards on Leafs is not the individual parts, but the whole. Commentary here is just disappointing.

If you actually believe that, I don't know what to tell ya. You think Matthews at age 34 will be worth 13.25M ? Genuine question.
I don't think he's worth that now, the point is, the contract length sucks and why the shit if he keeps scoring does he take less, given that he's gone up and up with both contracts, AM and his agent are both gonna just take less in 4 years? Really? You actually believe that?

Matthews is 7 years into his career and you still need to use pace to justify his production. At what point do you just have to admit production is production and the goals you don’t score because you are constantly injured don’t count.
Your right, his shortened seasons were all because of injuries and none of them were due to the Covid Pandemic

Yes. I’m sure Matthews and his agent pushed for a four year deal so that they would end up making less money in the long term.
Maybe he should have hired you as his agent. Lol.

You’re right, imagine how many Cups they would have won with Sundin. Didn’t he play one more year and retire or am I missing something here?

You must have been stoked to see sundin retire as a canuck while still missing the playoffs as a bubble team for many many years after sundin left.

Find me a star player over 30 who got paid more than his UFA deal in his 20’s.

You think Matthews and his agent have a crystal ball?
