I don't think we were playing him to his strengths tbh. He sucks in the top 6, he's not driving play there and if he can't drive play he's not good

In the bottom 6 with a scorer is what we should have taken a look at. We paired him with Kampf/ZAR, but neither of those guys are scorers and would miss the chances Malgin set up. It would've been worth a gamble if we kept him longer and saw how he worked with a bottom 6 guy who has a scoring touch (Jarnkrok)

And dealing him for more of what we have isn't ideal imo

Maybe he could be a Barabanov on a weaker team. But for a Top 5 team that seems to have Presidents Trophy aspirations he’s probably not that great of a fit.

we dealt him for somebody that has the same amount of goals as he has, but checks, and can drop the gloves. having a scorer in the lineup who doesnt score and cant do much else when he isnt scoring is less ideal imo. this way we can try hunt or give marlies players that are really performing a chance with the club to see what we have, malgin never made sense on this team given what hes done in his NHL career.

I don't think the playoffs with hinge on the depth players, Hunt is actually more suited for the playoffs then Malgin would be. Toronto just needs their bottom 6 in the playoffs to be good defensively and not get outplayed, they'll be able to chip in some goals throughout the series.

As we know, and I think management knows it's on the top 6 to carry us and that 2nd line LW is the real target they will go after.

This seems like a loss to give Malgin a fresh start.

Dryden Hunt is basically another ZAR. Low skill but good defensively and hits.

It is this and hopefully another guy who keeps Simmonds out of the lineup.

Hunt is decent depth. Anderson was pretty much our only good defensive option, whereas SDA, Steeves, Gaudette, Robertson, Abruzzese, etc. are vying for offensive opportunities. Malgin did well on defensive lines though, and some of those guys would likely be the same.

Malgin deserves to go to another good team, and that is likely the main motivation anyways. Colorado is an excellent fit for him and I would not be surprised to see him flourish there.

Bonus is that this gives Anderson a lot more opportunities, and he deserves them too.

At the start of the season they had Aube-Kubel penciled into the 4RW hole to help create a grind line with ZAR. Malgin and Robertson went on heaters in the preseason and early into the season, so they placed Aube-Kubel on waivers to make room. Turns out Malgin (or Robertson) couldn't maintain their early start and it began to feel like they could have used Aube-Kubel or a guy like him in the role Malgin was playing. I think cutting NAK early may have been a minor mistake and they fixed it with this trade. Hunt is defintely a similar player to NAK in terms of physicality.

I think the Leafs are going to add Knies after the deadline and a big name forward at the deadline which would force Hunt to the 14th forward hole by the time playoffs come around assuming good health. I expected that is where Malgin would end up too and I figured exchanging him with a forward who could add sandpaper if inserted into a playoff lineup would be smart.

Why Toronto made the deal

After a decent start to the season in which he netted two goals in his first six games playing limited minutes, Malgin’s production began to crater: he did not score in November or December and had just two assists in that 17-game stretch. The opportunities for Malgin were certainly there: he spent a recent stretch on the Leafs’ second line alongside John Tavares and Mitch Marner. Malgin has some tenacity and speed in his game, but playing alongside those two players the production needs to follow, especially considering the heater that Marner has been on lately. — Kloke

How Hunt fits with the Maple Leafs

The Leafs remain in need of a forward who can produce in a top six role, and that could be at the top of their shopping list ahead of the trade deadline. Hunt won’t fill that role, but he could get a look on the Leafs’ fourth line. Hunt is more of a defensively-minded forward and serving a depth role makes some sense. His best season, production-wise, was in 2021-22 with the Rangers when he had six goals and 17 points in 76 games. But even then, Hunt was miscast in a top six role. — Kloke

I like it. Needed a bottom 6 forward with some grit who can actually play in the Playoffs. If you're not gonna play Simmonds than we needed to replace him.

Hopefully he isn't just another guy who comes in and out of the lineup. Need mainstays on the 4th line

Please Malgin. Shit the bed in Colorado and go back to the Swiss League. Not because I hate you, but because I don't want another 3-5 years of the Marchment nonsense about how we traded a guy "too soon" and look how good he is now. Boo hoo...Dubas sucks...wah wah! Spare us the trauma, Denis...please!!!!!!!!
