They probably would have had to waive Malgin eventually once bodies start returning to the lineup. He would have easily been claimed.

This way we get someone that plays hard and can be brought up and down through waivers without really having to worry about him getting claimed.
Not sure it makes a difference.....Malgin is gone anyway. Hunt may not get claimed, but if the whole reasoning for the trade was that Malgin would have been claimed, then this is a bit of a moot argument.

Probably just doing Malgin a solid. I mean....he gets to go to the defending cup champs.

Malgin needs the puck too much on his stick to work on the top 6. It makes no sense for him to carry the puck on a line with Nylander or Marner, his off-the-puck game isn't as strong as theirs either, he's pretty invisible. Hunt is Engvall backup in case of injury or trade imo.

Hunt was cleared from waivers and Malgin wasn’t. Jarnkrok came back so Toronto had to send someone down. Instead of losing Malgin to waivers they traded him
Ah so it was mostly a matter of get something rather than nothing. I get that they want to see more of Anderson too that it does make sense. Also adds size to the roster/bottom 6 if needed.

I wondered about odds of Malgin waivers versus Hunt.

Could also be a favor to Malgin and of course Hunt is from Cranbrook so part of the deal with Vancouver.

I wonder if a marginal draft pick would have created more of a waiver, contract flexibility. But a warm body is fine.

Kind of wonder if the Malgin support will live on like a phantom limb. He was fine in his second go around. Nothing proportional to how much talk surrounds him.

both marginal players but Hunt tracks better defensively. fits the pattern of recent bottom 6 moves Dubas has been making...while defence is no more or less important than offence, it is undeniably cheaper on the cap to acquire.

Don't like this deal. Liked malgin. Thought he added skill to our bottom 6.
I thought if you paired him with someone who had a nice shot (like Jarnkrok) you could have potentially had a decent depth scoring line

Malgin drove play well but struggled to score, Jarnkrok would've helped him there. Would've liked to try that and see what we had

Only question I have about this trade is the contract spot more valuable then Hunt. If we plan on sending prospects in a move that doesn't matter anyways however

I just find it unnecessarily polarizing. Like our new age GM brought in a completely unremarkable depth player on his own accord and that somehow is an invitation to take a potshot at someone that doesn’t really exist.

Because you feel like it targets you? It was mostly targeted at the media. I don't think it's polarizing or was meant as an insult, it was just to point out that Dubas did a move that goes against his biggest criticism. This fits a lot of people in different social media platforms.

Dubas got his Nicolas Aube-Kubel back, lite version.

Any player that plays 76 games in 2021-22 and 28 games so far this year with good NHL teams is a NHL player.
Maybe just a guy, but has experience and is 4th line insurance.

But if he can do the below twice a month we will love him.
