How is this good? You just traded another 1st round to dump a guy YOU just signed last year. People ragged Lou and the Marleau thing for less. Now all of a sudden this is good? Not how you build something that endures. This is his you build something desperate.
It is not really accurate to only describe it as "a first round pick to dump a contract".

It is trading a late first for an early second to dump a contract, dropping 13 spots where value is generally the same anyway. It is a very light price to pay to get rid of that much cap for two years.

We traded a 25th for a 38th. There is very little difference between those two picks in this draft. This is a good move for us, don't dwell on sunk costs.

Mrazek was a bad signing from the beginning. Dubas able to fix the problem without having to give up anything. 13 spots is worth something but with the way the board fell, i don’t think we are losing much if anything. If Mrazek isn’t healthy that is almost $4M in dead cap gone and you don’t lose a major asset.

Excellent trade.

He created the problem. Dubas cost the team 13 spots to move down , based on a stupid decision he made less than 1 year ago. Its not an excellent trade at all.

Because this could mean the difference between running with Mrazek and Kallgren or running Campbell/Kuemper and Kallgren.

Sign a starter and this is an easy win
Lose in the 1st round again and it’s not. Better hope the goalie we get is a good as you want and not a product of a solid defensive system and coaching of another org.

Shoutout MAF taking 3.5 per. I know age but if you’re Campbell with a riddled injury history, how can you justify over 5 (unless offered of course).

Get yo ass back home

Not a bad deal at all under the circumstances. I thought the cost would have been much steeper to unload Mrazek without retention. It was Dubas' mistake to rectify, but at least he acted quickly and did so at a very reasonable cost.

Now the even harder work begins. I can't remember the last time we were this thin in goal at any point of an off season.

Chicago drafted Rinzel at 25. Rinzel was mocked at 38. Can the debbie downers please familiarize themselves with the concept of sunk cost and appreciate this as simply a positive deal for us.

It's certainly not 'good'. But at the same time, it's fine to acknowledge that the relative cost of burying the problem is fairly acceptable.

If Marleau had cost moving back in the draft a dozen or so spots, it wouldnt remain as much of a sore spot as it is for some.

How many good signings are here?

Not many of these GMs have fixed their mistake from last year.

Two things can be true, the signing was bad, the trade was good.

He created the problem. Dubas cost the team 13 spots to move down , based on a stupid decision he made less than 1 year ago. Its not an excellent trade at all.

I agree. But the deal is done. You either stick with the $3.8M problem or you fix it. And you lost 13 spots to fix it.

Mrazek has 2 years left at $3.8M per and the leafs gave up 13 spots.

Kassian has 2 years left at $3.2M and he is at least serviceable and Edmonton had to give up 3 spots, a future 2nd and a 3rd to get rid of his deal.

The original signing was bad. But cost close to nothing in comparison to a deal that happened at the exact same time.

What would you rather have today knowing you can’t go back in time and undo the Mrazek deal; Mrazek’s $3.8M on the books and pick 25 or $3.8M in cap space and pick 38?

For me, I’m taking the latter without hesitation.

It was a huge mistake to sign Mrazek to that contract, given the previous season he had. Now because of Dubas, the Leafs are going to be screwed for a goalie
