I get were not moving down much, and an early second/late first have similar value but optically it looks like shit. Second time in how many years we've had to trade a first for a bad contract that we signed.

Honestly thus isn't that bad of a move

Overall I give Mrazek signing then trade a C rating

We overpaid and gave to much term for an injury prone 1B

This trade though didn't cost that much. 25thOA and 38OA won't be nhl players until 16/34/88 have all hopefully signed their 3rd contracts

We just need to get a hit at 38OA, and either get lucky to see that timeliness be 1-year earlier or see the 38OA get a large increase in value due to a great D+1 and then deal him next deadline or offseason if we can get a quality piece

nice precedence this gm is setting. give the player ntc and then the next year ask them to waive it.

Mrazek should be thanked a lot more here btw

Damn, it took a 1st just to get rid of 1 yr of Marleau.
13 spot Drop to dump 2 yrs of Mrazek is good value on its own. Though they signed him to that deal too, lulz

Our goaltending next season confirmed:

Only in Toronto is signing a trash injury riddled goaltender and overpaying him for years and then subsequently trading our first round pick to dump him the very next season is somehow considered a good move.

No, it's not a good move because the initial signing was laughed at by most people with half a brain, including me.

It sucks that this has to happen to begin with.

But moving back 13 or so spots to do so really isn't too bad of a cost. especially considering the number of guys still available.

So meh, ill take it.

It's a very good deal for Cap Space in particular if you have a plethora of players you have to choose from that are approximately the same value in your scouts assessment at these drafting positions.

I'm not as harsh on Dubas as others on here. He has delivered strong teams, the players haven't sacrificed enough (and I will swear to my grave that the reffing this series cost the Leafs). I thought this signing made the least sense to me at the time of all his signings. I know what he was thinking, but the injury issue should not have been ignored for that term.

Leafs will have to find a #1 now and they have $3.5M more to work with to sign/trade for one.

Good trait to be able to admit a mistake and get rid of it, knowing that the public sentiment is not going to be kind. This is the best move for the team today and it's good to see Dubas not being afraid to make it.

Would love to have a GM who gives 13th overall for Romanov! That grit and toughness!!!

Sure keep using him as a reference to make Dubas look like a star
For the record. Lou even not making the playoffs last year, has played more playoff games last 3 years then the Leafs

Then there GMs like Yzerman, Brisebois and Sakic. but we shouldn't compare Dubas to them..... They gave us respect

All GMs make bad signings, not all of the get out of them like Dubas has. That's a good skill he has.
Pretty much. He still stayed at a decent number at 38. Good deal. At least this gets rid of the narrative that Mrazek was staying here. Bryan Hayes and Kyper have some explaining to do.

Mirtle is definitely hard to take seriously considering his ties/connections with Dubas

The trade was a good one, but the signing was terrible

Overall he undid a huge mistake and made it into a below average overall transaction

Mirtle is certainly a dubas fanboy so he'll paint this in a biased view
Compared to the previous GMs approach to building teams, Dubas seems to be the smartest.

He makes bad moves but overall he's been a positive here.

He has to grow some balls and do things he would normally do. He had to make this trade. No doubt.
So make the trade and lets move on

Now the question is, who is our starter?
Don't tell me he's going to sign Campbell

All GMs make bad signings, not all of the get out of them like Dubas has. That's a good skill he has.
Most GMs get out of mistakes so long as the mistake isn't a very lengthy one. You won't get rid of a vlasic, Seabrook type mistake.

Lou got out of Ladd (not his mistake bit got rid of him), Panthers dealt Stralman and his bad deal at a set price to free space last year

Teams have to pay a price to get rid of them and we paid a solid one.

Dubas needs to avoid any more of these mrazek/Ritchie type signings. Need to give money to impact and healthy players.

As long as we don't do something like give Bunting 7-8 years at 5-6M we shouldn't have a mistake that we can't get rid of

The usual cost to move up from 38 into the first round is a 2nd, no? Feeling iffy about paying that, tbh.
