Still on about Marleau huh? Bad deal sure, but what created the absolute necessity to get out of the contract ? Seemed to be ample cap space when the last guy left.

Tell yourself what you want about cap space and who is responsible for that side but ultimately what created the absolute necessity to move him was his price vs his abysmal level of play.

No one will give 2 sh*ts .. Dubie is half way there now .. he eliminated Petr problem OMG he sucks bad .. and if he ends up with Beck da draft will be a huge success .. Gibson added later today would be cherry on top .. if those events all occur today then Leafs win this draft over Habs who had a great day 1

Petr had to go, the expense fair. Beck won't be there. Gibson would be great though, not gonna lie.

what happened to that guy morrison pro scouting guy ? fired for Wes?

edit: nvm that was john lilley who held pro scouting director title. he got replaced for Wes last year

morrison is still director of player personell

I'll wait to cheer til we find out how Dubas uses that cap space. Dumping Mrazek at 3.8 so you can get another "Mrazek" at 4.5-5.5 wouldn't be that far off of a stretch.

I’m scared of what Dubas is going to do with that cap space.

Watch it be used on Matt Murray.

If he can get Murray at 50% retain and re-acquire Connor Brown as the throw in (Brown said he’s not resigning in Ottawa next year) I will literally take back any bad word I said about him yesterday

But management set the price and expectation for the player when they signed here. So at some point you can’t have management taking wild swings at inappropriate fits and then say “oh well” because the loss of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 first rounders will be felt for many years down the line with not much to show for.

Murray at 50% retained still has the potential to be an even worse goalie than Mrazek.

A Matt Murray signing could pay off as an extreme long bet at this point. But if he plays to a Mrazek level and the Leafs have to dig out of another situation, it might be a good moment to take a step back into casual fandom.

> Mrazek today, who was helpful to process with no-trade clause

Dubas gave Mrazek a no trade clause ?

Jesus

> Per source on the Leafs mindset for trading Mrazek: “Toronto believes they will get a guy they have rated in the top 15 with their 38th and was able to offload Mrazek, as well”

Small skilled winger incoming

...He says, as he goes on about Marleau.

The fact that all of our ELCs were ending, and he was 6.25m in either dead cap or on-ice liability during a contention phase.

Actually, there wasn't. Leafs had the highest team cap hit in the league in 2017-2018, despite all of our star forwards being on their ELCs.

Yet we had space to blow 11 mil on Tavares.

Look at the Deangelo trade. Signs for $1M, Canes rehab his value, trade him for 3 picks and saves themselves money. That's asset management at its finest. Dubas has ZERO experience before AND now in this area. Dubas just churns his account like a rookie broker straight out of some school with an outdated reputation.

Lesson? Cut your losses on Dubas instead.

We didn't "blow 11m on Tavares". We used the money gained from players walking to UFA to add an elite player in UFA, and improved the quality of our team in the process.

So your attempt to frame an excuse that dubas was given no cap space to work with was false got it.

Captain contridiction continues

I like it. Viewed from a perspective of giving the club a better shot to win in the next 2 years it's great. We couldnt unsign Mrazek and this means no dicking around with him as a 1b and they regain the ability to resign Jack or do a bigger spend on a #1 provided the 2 is paid like a 2.

Hopefully the pro scouts and Sanford do a better job of vetting the next new Leaf than their predecessors.

Year 1 - 27 goals and 47 points
Year 2 - 16 goals and 37 points

Not worth the $6M but hardly abysmal. Cap space was why he needed to go, pure and simple.

My statement was true. There was not "ample cap space when the last guy left". We were the highest payroll team in the entire league, despite all of our star forwards being on ELCs.

There were departing players, but departing players need to be replaced.
