How did we possibly afford to pay JT $11M with no cap space when the last GM left?Actually, there wasn't. Leafs had the highest team cap hit in the league in 2017-2018, despite all of our star forwards being on their ELCs.

Magic! How did we possibly afford to pay JT $11M with no cap space when the last GM left?
We had players depart in UFA, and we used that money to sign an elite player in UFA to replace them. How did we possibly afford to pay JT $11M with no cap space when the last GM left?
And who made the decision to sign an elite player to an $11M contract knowing they had 3 stars coming off ELCs, one year left on a bad $6M contract , and another bad contract in Zaitsev? We had players depart in UFA, and we used that money to sign an elite player in UFA to replace them.

Not really sure why you keep talking. We get it ,he traded your boy.. Your bias is alarming. It's a good deal regardless of semantics.Still on about Marleau huh? Bad deal sure, but what created the absolute necessity to get out of the contract ? Seemed to be ample cap space when the last guy left.
I didn't raise the Marleau contract, I could care less about Marleau, the topic was cap management and Dubas' history of trading 1sts to get himself out of "trouble" (of his own making)Not really sure why you keep talking. Doing nothing except watch the team get worse because the last guy signed horrible contracts isn't an option or a solution. Tavares was signed with money from departing players, not from cap space we had when the last guy left. Departing players and their impact need to be replaced. And who made the decision to sign an elite player
Year 1 - 27 goals and 47 points
Year 2 - 16 goals and 37 points
Not worth the $6M but hardly abysmal. Cap space was why he needed to go, pure and simple.
Yeah they really should have just left him to rot in the press box until he begged to leave. This is a case of the stats really not telling the story. His quality of play fell sharply in the second half of year 2
Not the point as I'm not debating the merits of the signing as it has it's pros and cons.you wouldn't sign a superstar centre in free agency? Hindsight is 20/20.
Kind of funny how last week the official talking points were how the Leafs were in great cap shape compared to the Lightning who only got marginal value for McDonagh and this week, the deal had to be done to create flexibility.
Yeah they really should have just left him to rot in the press box until he begged to leave.
If he can get Murray at 50% retain and re-acquire Connor Brown as the throw in (Brown said he’s not resigning in Ottawa next year) I will literally take back any bad word I said about him yesterday
I suppose that's an answer to a question, just not to the one I asked.Doing nothing except watch the team get worse because the last guy signed horrible contracts isn't an option or a solution. Tavares was signed with money from departing players, not from cap space we had when the last guy left. Departing players and their impact need to be replaced.
You didn't. I was expanding on your thought of his play declining.I can’t say I know where this is coming from, both teams had and still have tight cap situations. I feel like this is universally understood to be the case
Where did I say anything of the sort?
Why are people bragging about this like it’s some genius move? Yeah fixing your own f*** up is a mic drop moment that’s for sure. Bravo Kyle, have a 5 year extension
So many people here hated this signing when it happened along with the Ritchie one and they were all right that they would end up total fails. Somehow our 100 million dollar analytics department convinced themselves otherwise though.
Let’s see what we end up with now in goal. Using that money to overpay or bring in another reclamation project can’t be his only move in goal this summer. At the very least, Dubas seems to realize he effed up gambling on bargain bin goalies but as always a bit later than everyone else.

It's the answer to the only question that matters here. You're attempting to claim that Lou's mistake is Dubas' fault because he did what GMs do and replaced his departing players instead of just sitting aside, doing nothing, and passing up opportunities as his team got worse in a contention phase. Your claim that there was "ample cap space when the last guy left" was incorrect. We were the highest payroll team in the entire league
No, he wasn't. We were the highest payroll team in the league. He was left with departing players who needed to be replaced. So he was left with a lot of cap space
This is pure speculation on my part, but it appeared to me to be Danila Yurov who went at 24. It was not until after Yurov had been selected that the camera shifted to Dubas who was on his phone and did not look happy. My guess is that the Leafs would have taken Yurov rather than trade the pick if he had still been available.Traditionally there are often times where quality picks fall out of the first round or go late 1st, early 2nd. 1st come 1st serve.
Some organizations have a higher hit rate in this range at picking winners than others.
I don't know who Dubas and his staff had on the table, if you do please let me know.
Time honored HFBoards tradition of reviewing the 2022 draft in 4-5 years time will be interesting.
Since Dekes is incapable of answering a simple question, does anyone else wanna take a shot at it?It's the answer to the only question that matters here.
