And for all we know, he didn't even want Mrazek but was like "ok, but this is on you guys" in the board room meeting.

And trading a first to get rid of Marleau wasn't his fault either.

When else has he had to pay 1st round picks to fix his mistake?

And yeah, 25, 38 in this draft? We'll have to look back in 5 years, and be lucky if we can.
Of course Marleau was his fault. He chose to pay the first to move him.
This was a way better move than that.

I gotta applaud the Leafs for getting out of the Mrazek contract with minimal damage. It didn't work out, but you can't let it cripple you.

Look at how much Edmonton paid to shed some cap money.

This is the first time he has done it. Lyubushkin was worth a 3rd based on the market value... And it is really irrelevant if you like him as a player or not.

Marleau was Lou's mistake. Dubas was just the one who had to clean it up.

Once is not the definition of a 'regular occurrence' when other GM's have had to do the exact same thing.
We gave up extra pics to get rid of Ritchie, the breakdown is arguable, though. Giving up pics for Foligno and pretty every acquisition we made at that trade deadline that year (4 or 5) pics was a disaster, and now Mrazak after 1 year, this is all within 15 months, the amount of assets Dubas is wasting, it's getting ridiculous.

He’s already beyond competent and was the only one considered for colorados vacancy. Sakic isn’t an idiot is he? He wanted to hire dubas was denied then kept the job for himself.
Gms make mistakes, kyles no different. What he has shown is a really decent ability to make those mistakes disappear with minimal cost.
Only one issue I have with Kyle. Negotiations. I think not getting Matty to 8 years was unacceptable, giving Mitch 10m was unacceptable and the Foligno trade was horrible. Actually two, i dislike how he is so gentle with the players but ah well. Good young gm but he needs to be a bit more ruthless.

It was a 13 spot drop to fix what was a puzzling error in judgement in the Leafs department of player personnel. Unless of course Dubas just simply overruled everyone and decided to follow his gut and made the signing of his own accord.

That said, 7.6 million saved over two years for the low cost of backing up 13 spots, plus the 3.8 now added in cap space however is a real help to their tight spot. With that 38th pick they should still be able to select a player that has some real promise of playing in the league someday.

I think long time Leafs fans living in the cap world get more enjoyment out of getting rid of "debt" than acquiring more haha.

Like for real I didn't even hear the whole trade (that we dropped to 38th pick) and I was already so freaking relieved to get rid of Mrazek/$3.8m cap. Like that actually came off my own personal debt.

Pre-covid, analysts projecting the cap to rise to $90m, the guy didn't have a crystal ball.

And that he learns from it, or can hold that over some other Leafs brass that pushed him to do it.

If this was all to re-sign Campbell at what he's expected to make though, that f***ing sucks.

I think Kyle is a smart guy, prove me wrong?
I keep reading your name as smoggytwinkies....and every time I start wondering how it would be.

If you are talking about Auston Matthews for 8 years, it was due to have cap flexibility iirc. I still stand by the biggest mistake Dubas made was the folingo trade that one is just bugs me.

People don't understand that the likelihood of drafting an NHLer at 25 vs 38 is pretty close to the same.

They may have drafted Firkus, Hutson, Beck, Del Bel at 25. They might draft one of them at 38 (or someone else) - 20-50 is legitimately just pick a guy territory out of a large group.

I'd love for Dubas to stop trading 1st round picks, but this one was a banger IMO. Love it.

moving down 13 slots is a small price to pay to get rid of Mrazek. Dubas got out of it but that contract should never have been signed to begin with. Let's hope he makes better use of it this time.

He expected to get a .910 goalie. That was not an unreasonable expectation, nor an unreasonable contract for that expectation.

He is better than he was here, and it should not surprise anyone when he does if he can stay healthy.

Man just could not stay healthy, and guess what, one guy lost his job as a result. We hired a Strength and Conditioning coach from the Panthers to replace him.

We also dropped two mental peak performance coaches.

You mean like basically moved down 13 spots to relive 3.8 million in cap space?
Sorry , no idea what point you’re trying to make ?

Dubas signed a player that turned into a cap dump after just 1 yr and he had to pay to get rid of him . I wouldn’t have moved down 13 spots out of the 1st rd without getting two 2nds in in the top half of the 2nd return . So basically imo it cost Dubas a high 2nd to clean up his f*** up ,

It seems like your trying to praise him for spending assets to clean up a mess he created .

bottom line is we signed another Jack Campbell as "insurance" on the one we had. it was never a great move, honestly.

I was hoping for an additional late round pick as part of the return just to give us more draft capital, but at least he's gone.

Dubas has no room for error on his next goalie moves.
If you had Andersen teams would give you picks for him rather than Mrazek costing you picks to get rid of.
Would have had to re-sign Andersen for that to be even possible. He burned that bridge.

This is nothing to applaud. Dubas blew it. He bew it today and last offseason. Why on earth did he sign him for so much and so long. Now he has to trade a 1st?!

I'm happy.

Now he has to look for more goalies to sign in an offseason with a major shortage.

Agreed and now he's trading a 1st once again to get rid of a player.
Wrong. He moved down 13 spots and stayed in the 2nd round. Thats equal to a late 2nd early 3rd. Do people even understand anymore
Holland also got rid of a first too. Right?
