Another bad signing that puts us out of the first round maybe?? If we don’t get a good player at 38, and we end up missing out on a star player at 25, how is this not a terrible deal?
Another? What other terrible deals has dubas had to get out of? Ritchie brought back a top 6D that projected to cost a 3rd to obtain, mrazek was 13 spots back. If you traded back from 25 to 38 you probably get something like a 3rd or early 4th. So mrazek cost that in value, oh well. If mrazek played to his decade long career norms he would be a cost neutral asset, shit happens. It’s exhausting listing to some of you cry about it.
This is good biz opening up that cap room

Man I hate Oilers fans, just throwing it out there
It's okay we will forever live in their brain rent-free

Dubas has spent a lot of pics rectifying his mistakes, this is becoming a regular occurrence.

Prior to COVID they were projecting big time rise in the cap ceiling, Dubas trusted in that.

Then COVID happened and the cap froze.

That's why we're in a pinch the last couple years.

Perspective.

He's a good young GM who's learning. If the Leafs ever dump him, he'll land another job for sure, and he'll keep getting better at it.

I just don't want to lose Shanny....ever. He's the real brains here IMO.

Good point, but not for less than Bunting, Kampf, and Kase combined...we would have still had to move someone out to accommodate it probably.
If it all works out perfectly, you re-allocate the 2.5 from Ritchie and 3.8 from Mraz and still end up with a Reimer backup option at 2.25 per. It gets you into the range Hyman wanted, makes us a better team this year and improves our goaltending.

Tough to hit on all of that though, and you still need to worry about Hyman on a long term deal.

But it would also soldify our top 6 and provide a 1B option so the goaltending need isnt as dire.

This is the first time he has done it. Lyubushkin was worth a 3rd based on the market value... And it is really irrelevant if you like him as a player or not.

Marleau was Lou's mistake. Dubas was just the one who had to clean it up.

Once is not the definition of a 'regular occurrence' when other GM's have had to do the exact same thing.

So in other words, we may have to wait for how long? 5? 10 years before he becomes competent?

He’s already beyond competent and was the only one considered for colorados vacancy. Sakic isn’t an idiot is he? He wanted to hire dubas was denied then kept the job for himself.
Gms make mistakes, kyles no different. What he has shown is a really decent ability to make those mistakes disappear with minimal cost.

If true, that was nice of Chicago to bail out this clown for a terrible signing

Dubas pulls off this deal to get rid of a bad contract. Instead of giving him credit you are giving all the credit to Chicago and calling him a clown? Biased much?

I don't think they are bandwagoners or idiots.... it frustrating IMO tbh and I get it. I am frustrated myself but sometimes it's hard to bring perspective when emotions run high and we want to see what we want to see. At the end of the day, I am sure a lot of them will be by our side cheering lol.

Don't get me wrong though...there are some who only show up when this state is very much present :P

And for all we know, he didn't even want Mrazek but was like "ok, but this is on you guys" in the board room meeting.

And trading a first to get rid of Marleau wasn't his fault either.

When else has he had to pay 1st round picks to fix his mistake?

And yeah, 25, 38 in this draft? We'll have to look back in 5 years, and be lucky if we can.

How can we forget that Marleau’s terrible contract cost us a 1st in the top half of the draft in 2020. I’m fine with the ritchie trade, but these trade downs in exchange of offloading bad contracts have a big potential for looking pretty bad down the road. Trading down 13 spots out of the first round is also definitely not + 3rd/4th round pick value.

moving down 13 slots is a small price to pay to get rid of Mrazek. Dubas got out of it but that contract should never have been signed to begin with. Let's hope he makes better use of it this time.

It was a 13 spot drop to fix what was a puzzling error in judgement in the Leafs department of player personnel. Unless of course Dubas just simply overruled everyone and decided to follow his gut and made the signing of his own accord.

That said, 7.6 million saved over two years for the low cost of backing up 13 spots, plus the 3.8 now added in cap space however is a real help to their tight spot. With that 38th pick they should still be able to select a player that has some real promise of playing in the league someday.

And that he learns from it, or can hold that over some other Leafs brass that pushed him to do it.

If this was all to re-sign Campbell at what he's expected to make though, that f***ing sucks.

I think Kyle is a smart guy, prove me wrong?
