“..one of the best players was probably Nick Foligno,” said Clark, “And it had nothing to do with stats. If you look at the stats, he wasn’t leading at all. But he was. He was leading as an energy player. He was in the face of our best players all the time, finishing checks and wearing down our defence.
“It might not work in the first period of Game 1, but by the third period of Game 5, what he was doing for the whole series made them a better team.”

the Captain has spoken

I recall stating on here before the series that I felt that Columbus would beat the Leafs. Not surprisingly I had great disagreement. As a Leafs fan I obviously rooted for my team, but I was honest.

My argument at that time was, to paraphrase "until this team shows it can beat the type of team Columbus is, I have to choose Columbus"

Now we are more like that team, even adding two of their solid forwards, except we have more firepower and better D.

Dubas can't be done in my estimation. Don't leave anything to chance. Fill any holes or doubts tomorrow and let it ride.

Foligno was my hope out of the rumor mill list, heart and soul type player with plenty ruggedness and perserverance a prototype player imho will shine for us to add to the Hyman tenacity type player who I have large respect for the kind of player he is and what he brings game in and out and Nick is a tad meaner as well.
Me too, Foligno was my wish all along

I'd just like to take this opportunity to remind people of 5 years ago versus today:

Kadri, Parenteau, Komarov, Rielly, Bozak, Gardiner, Van Riemsdyk, Holland, Boyes, Phaneuf, Grabner, Matthias, Greening , Lupul, Winnik, Nylander, Hunwick, Laich, Spaling, Marincin, Hyman, Smith, Brown, Michalek, Corrado, Leivo, Soshnikov, Froese, Arcobello, Carrick, Clune, Leipsic, Loov, Lindberg, Brennan, Campbell, Gauthier, Harrington, Carrick, Percy, Kapanen, Valiev, Sparks, Reimer, Bernier

Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Hyman, Nylander, Rielly, Spezza, Muzzin, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Holl, Brodie, Thornton, Simmonds, Engvall, Galchenyuk, Foligno, Dermott, Bogosian, Brooks, Sandin, Petan, Barabanov, Andersen, Agostino, Anderson, Lijegren, Amirov, Robertson, Hutchinson, Campbell

With a couple of tweaks, that second list of names could find themselves etched on the Stanley Cup.

He hasn’t played a game for us yet, but my impression he is Hyman 2.0. I hope he re-joins us in the off season

Its not going to be a predictable draft for sure. The OHL guys are going to go based on last season ffs. You could theoretically get a top 5 talent at 30 except you never saw his mid season surge so he actually goes in the 5th. Imagine you are picking 1st in 2007 and you scouted the hell out of Angelo Esposito the year before and didn't get to see Kane roar to an OHL scoring championship. I remember at mid season they were talking about guys like Gagner and JVR going #1. On the flip side the later picks might have a bit more shine than in a typical year as there could be some surprises.
So your argument is that there's always unpredictable value in drafts. How profound. Thx nuck.

I mentioned this on Thursday!
Leafs gotta pull a 94 rangers type deadline.
rangers won the cup in 1940, 1994 (54 years)
leafs won the cup 1967, (54 years is this year...)
rangers went out and got playoff type greats
Glenn Anderson, Craig Mactavish, Stephane Matteau at the deadline.
traded a great player in Gartner to leafs (one of the top goal scorers in NHL history but no Cup ring).
My favorite player Wendel Clark was asked who leafs need for playoffs: he said Foligno. I’m gonna trust his judgement. that’s the type of players we need. would be great to get more players who have won the cup already as well. Again rangers broke their 54 year wait, lets break our 54 year wait.

I’m getting déjà vu. I think this poster is onto something...

I actually provided you the point totals that Atkinson and and Bjorkstrand have this year (31 and 28), while playing similar minutes to Foligno in Columbus's top 36. They're out pacing him by double and there is no Panarin there anymore.

I don't think that Foligno is some useless player. I fullynunderstand what he brings as a defensive forward and a pest. I'm just not a fan of the cost because I don't think he's a needle mover in the top 6.

Obviously we disagree. There is nothing wrong with that.
You don't get to change the argument because you didn't like the outcome. We were talking about scoring goals, not point totals. You even specifically said "no problem scoring". Atkinson and Bjorkstrand are both on pace for 26 goals, which is about what they normally score apart from their anomaly seasons as I mentioned before. This isn't unusual for Torts as he'll get high offensive numbers from players for a season or two only for them to regress, like Booner Jenner scoring 30 and now unable to score 20 or Wennberg getting 40 assists then being unable to hit 30 after and even Foligno had 1 season above 20 goals(26 total second career high) under Torts. Either he's is strangling the offensive players , or he just has to be the unluckiest coach in the world. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Foligno is going to light it up in Toronto, but he's a guy who consistently scored 15-20 goals under Tortarella and now he's coming into a more free flowing offensive system , I'm not sure why you think this wouldn't be beneficial offensively to Foligno

He can also turn out to be a complete superstar. I mean nobody is playing right now, maybe some kid who was ranked at 28 has turned into a top 10 like Brendan Saad ( who was ranked top 10 then dropped due to injury)

It could go either way. Maybe a top 10 player will drop to 28 since you know, he hasn't played in a year or in some cases who were injured hasnt' played in 2 years

a 16 year old going to be 18 by the time of a draft. You know that transformation physically?

a one dimensional team that is overly offensive will not get you past the first round. I think we have relived this scenario over and over for the last 4 years. It’s time for a more balanced team that covers all the necessary areas for postseason success

Small price in a week draft where it looks like we will be drafting late. His Dad wanted to win it here. He wanted his dad to win it here. This brings intenables. He will be another Hyman. Plus Ritter. Seems alot of hot takes that will smell ripe.

The next day will certainly reveal where we are at with things. If we can add a goalie then we aren't expecting Andersen back to backup Campbell anytime soon. If not then he's probably closer than we think and can hopefully get out there to let Campbell rest a bit.

I get why people were focused on Hall. That would be a crazy skilled top group. But I honestly like the versatility we get here. Foligno can play in a lot of situations on different lines. It gives Keefe huge options to mix things up. And honestly yeah we can use that kind of guy and the element he adds.

They are going for it as much as they possibly can. And I'm excited to see how it works out.

Jack Campbell is that you

I called it on another thread - in terms of realistic trades to make to acquire a player we needed, Foligno was the guy I thought was the best fit for the Leafs. Checks off all the things we need more of from our F group - physicality, grit, great defensive play, and a serviceable top 6 guy. And he adds to our leadership with his playoff experience and being a former captain.

Wasn't cheap at all for a rental, but we are GOING FOR IT, and he's a very solid add.
