Why are they paying a 35 year old 7mil to centre our third line? This guy isn't going to magically get faster, stronger, and more effective the older he gets. He is lucky that he has a guy like Nylander stapled to him to help him with his offensive output. Let's not forget that a lot of that output came from when Matthews was out and he had to benefit of playing with Marner (9 of his 10 points in Nov).

I get he is great at faceoffs, but he is going to need to be more and more sheltered moving forward. If you look at his foot speed early in the season it was great, he has become significantly slower since then. This is only going to become more apparent as he ages out. This is becoming ridiculous; the f*** is management even doing now?

For reference, he has 2 goals and 7 points in 2025 so far. Let that sink in. 2 goals in 11 games should not = 7m/y. He isn't a model of consistency, he is a model of how well his wingers can carry him this year.

If they pay him that managers lost the plot or executives love the name recognition and are content milking the jersey sales to kids that don't grasp the big picture.

I always go to bat for JT around here, but you'd think, providing we bow out early again this year, if the philosophy is to change the leadership group in the dressing room and give the team a fresh feel in some way, he'd be an easy candidate to let walk. Doesn't leave us enviable at center, though.

Yeah this is way to soon to be resigning him, they need to do this at the end of the season.

It's primarily the team's responsibility to rein that in to a degree in order to balance the team. The team has failed spectacularly in that regard.

It's obviously JT's camp that is pushing for the extension now. They know Knies is going to get a haul and they know Marner is going to want a raise - there's only so much to go around so they want to ensure they get "top dollar" now while there are still funds left - Big number left looks good....

Everyone says we hold the cards - look at who else is available.. maybe we don't hold as much as we thought - We saw Stammer go to Nashville when everyone thought he would retire a Bolt. We could let him walk and be a bottom feeder again. Not an easy spot - thus why his camp is pushing for 7M now before the season ends and the Tetris game of the salary cap begins.

Nylander being <point per game for 11.5M is a problem. Nylander being <point per game at 6.9M isn't a problem.

I fully agree depth scoring isn't an issue but this thread is about re-signing Tavares for 7M which makes it difficult to find competent depth scoring (especially when Tavares has scored at a 23 goal pace the past 2 playoff runs).

I believe we bought high on Willy. But he is second in the league in goals. That’s goals are more than assists in contracts

I wanted the number to start with a 5 or a 6, not a 7. Especially when Tavares clearly wants to play here and his family has roots here, why would it be difficult to get him at a lower number?

That said, he'll be worth 7 million for the next three years, in my opinion. Here's some centers currently getting 7 million: Kevin Fiala, Josh Norris, Elias Lindholm, Sean Couturier, Kevin Hayes, Dylan Cozens, Troy Terry. I don't think it will be difficult for Tavares to contribute more than most of those players for the next three years.
