At minimum he's not really giving the team a discount,.he's taking market rate for pretty clear comparables for stars in their mid 30s.

While I'm still okay with the extension, it's a bit of a shame I was hoping for a deal that started giroux at $6.5with a 5 or 6.
What obvious comparables are you looking at? I see Stamkos at $8M x 4 and Lindholm at $7.75 x 7. as a 30 year old coming off a 44 point season. Giroux at $6.5M but he is a winger and that deal was 2 years ago. 3 years is a favor to the team, not the player at that age.

Not worth it. Go young. Attract young quick players
Go young to who? With what assets? All dropping JT does is create cap space with guys like Brock Nelson and Matt Duchene to try and spend it on. If they want younger and quicker they have to trade for it and if a player like Cozens hits the market there will be a lineup of clubs with more to offer. They have Knies as a blue chip but nobody wants to trade him. They don't need to clear Tavares' salary for the type of younger players they can afford but those players are gambles. I would love some options but they have contracted their way away from big trades.

Why on earth would you saddle yourself with these old men yet again when the wining teams are moving like lightning out there.

You know when you load up with old dudes? When you are rebuilding and bring in a lot of reliable defensively sound old guys with leadership skills.

This team's priorities and strategy is shit

Oh smart!

We lock up JT and Mitch, ride it out for a couple years, then rebuild.

Old man JT can captain the next tank.

It's the Leafs way. Let expiring contracts walk. Overpay elderly men and never pay mind to the vision of the type of team they want to create. Bring in the next Clarkson, overpay the group that can't get out of round 1.

Leaf fans are so scarred. They would rather a long rebuild then have any faith in the players that are pretty good and happened to get the team to the playoffs in the first place. I don't want a late Fletcher/Burke Era shit leafs team. I would rather have Taveres at 7 million and I would rather not have Jeff Finger at 3.5 million.

I don't have all the answers, but the situation is better now. Who hopes to bottom out and hope to hit a home run in the draft lottery? Only the most cynical fan would want this. While we're at it, a lot of teams would like to have Tavares for 3 years @ 7 million.

I don't get this at all. He is coming off a 7 X 77 million dollar deal. He has a wife from TOR and three kids. Has settled down and wants to stay. If that's the best discount he is willing to give then let him move on. It is too much money for an aging player, and we haven't won anything with this configuration of players. I he wants to take something with a caphit beginning with a 5, then sure. Otherwise, see you.
So who is the second line center next year? You would be banking on Granlund or Duchene making it out to market and they probably aren't signing for anything starting with a 5. Both are fleeter of foot than JT though so maybe not a huge money savings but a different look. I can't see Dallas letting their leading scorer walk but Granlund will be on the market for sure. Or Brock Nelson? He is a year younger but all these guys are aging players and getting them to sign their last deal for a 3 year term might not not work for them. Or add a couple cheaper ones who are younger and hope they bust out. Could you get Barret Hayton for the picks and prospects they have? And at 25 how much growth is there?

Of course we're scarred. You've been here the last decade too.

7 x 3 is a good deal that any team in the league would love to have.

However, I was hoping we'd get more creative with his contract, maybe do one of those deferral deals where the last few mil hit his pockets after he retires and thus don't get counted against the cap for some reason...or just sign him to like 8 years at 3 mil and let him sit on LTIR for the last few seasons.

I'm happy bringing 16 and 91 back at the right AAV that allows us to add better pieces. If not, I'm tired of the same stale, old rerun and would rather try something new. The team won't be shit building around 34 and 88. With the right moves, they might be better. While Tre was asleep Carbury and the Caps left us in their rearview mirror. It is only a matter of time that other teams will pass us.

No need to bottom out or remove everyone, they just need a different mix.

Most management groups would have already changed the core after this many failures.

Plus let's be fair, what's transpired with this core is quite scarring too. You watch your superstars do well in the regular season and then they come out as nerfed versions of themselves when the games matter more.

Insane he wants "market value" aka what some stupid team like Detroit would give him as opposed to taking a team friendly deal to try and win a cup. Honestly it shows the mentality of the Fraud Four (Rielly definitely could've gotten more if he really wanted to try and get every last penny) aka its all about money for them.

Personally I'm at the point (especially seeing the 3 of them do nothing in the 4NF) where I'm totally fine with getting rid of any/all of them. I don't think any of them can ever be "The Guy" and they want to get every last penny while grossly underperforming in the playoffs.

The fact that Luka/Rantanen got traded despite being proven clutch winners and our duds are still here says it all. More of the same from everyone, the President/GM/Coach/Players. Still soft and overpaid.

7 mil on a one year deal okay, 3 years is bad business. Was hoping for 5.5, we have the leverage here, he doesn't want to leave so squeeze him a bit. He squeezed us in free agency, it payback time. Love JT, and he's had a fantastic year to date, but I hate 7 per.
