I will be very happy if this indicates TOR is going to sign Russell to a long dumb deal after so much was made about their management being super into analytics

Not a chance. This move just frees up cap space for bonus overages for all the ELC players they're bringing in this year.

They'd likely need to free up additional cap space if they want Russel.

Like Shanny said yesterday, Leafs management didn't suddenly get dumb.

Everyone said beauchemin was a joke too. Then he left toronto and he became good again. This market can make anyone look horrible. Bernier will do well in anaheim with proper team in front of him.

In Lou's press conference he said Bernier was traded for future considerations, so it sounds like a conditional 7th or something. Regardless, glad to have the 4.15mil off the books. Wish Bernier the best of luck, hopefully he can rebound.

Boy, I remember there was a lot of optimism on here when the Leaf's acquired him and then he had a solid first year.
Confidence is a pretty fragile thing for goalies. Hopefully he rebounds.

I don't think it means that at all. Lou is the king of saying nothing.

You know the bolded how eactly?

I can also feel very confident in saying Babcock didn't like him. Just his comments towards his play/injuries were never really favouring. He had a lot of subtle jabs as well I.E I like goaltenders big (Talking about Sparks).

In saying that, Bernier played very well from January forward, he'll do well in Anaheim.

His rep was made playing for a very good LA team that was strong defensively. It was logical to most, that he would have been exposed playing for a weaker team. This is why I like his chances going to Anaheim who were #1 in GA last season. He is going back to a LA situation next year.

I'm hearing its a conditional 2nd

That would be surprising. I think it's just an extension of the Fredrik Andersen trade, but with the Leafs eating that signing bonus. That's why Andersen got maybe a touch more than market trade value, because it's de facto salary retention on Bernier coming later.

It's probably a late round pick if he re-signs or plays 50 games or something. If it was a 2nd, that likely would have been factored into the original trade.

Vesey, I'd like to hear about how moving 4.15 million in cap is a pre-cursor to signing an ELC. Sure there will be bonuses on Vesey's ELC wherever he signs and you want to minimize cap so as to not create an overage the following year but that's an issue the Leafs will have already. Nothing to do with Vesey.

Yeah I don't see the Leafs chasing Vesey.

Lou's anti-bonus to the point that they haven't even signed Matthews yet. Doubt they'd give much thought of Vesey considering he's already bailed on one team.

Hopefully behind a better team and in a purely backup role he'll do well. He could be great at times but he always seemed to let in a bad and usually early goal and couldn't come back from it. This happened so consistently there was just zero confidence in him here anymore.

The trade for Holland was actually a conditional 3rd that ended up becoming a 2nd due to games played.

I think he'll bounce back. He just seems to give up when the D in front of him is weak, but when he believes in the team, his play is much better. It's all mental with him, if/when he gets his mojo back, everyone will be laughing at Toronto for trading him away.

yeah I wasn't commenting on whether the Leafs will go after Vesey or not, just saying this wouldn't be a pre-cursor to signing an ELC. The only way they'd be related would be opening up cap so as to not have a cap overage carry over to next year if bonuses are achieved. If that was the point behind this deal then it's far more based on the 4 or 5 rookies who might get ELC bonuses we already have and not specifically looking at Vesey.

So I was just saying his making this move as a pre-cursor to Vesey doesn't make sense at all

This one was sneaky, why don't you list all the selections made then.. This was a picks deal purely, Anaheim has a great scouting staff. It's not exactly proper to post the players traded instead of the picks fyi.. The Leafs never owned any of these players.
