we're going to lose this player thanks to horrible contracts given to all our other D-men.

I don't see his contract being a problem.

Kreider, and probably Strome are coming off the books, so that's $7.5 million right there.

What do we have this year? Another $3.5 or so?

So already we're at $11 million in possible funds for next year. And that's without making any other moves.

it will suck if any of us believe a guy like lundkvist can just walk in here and do what ADA does. he cant and wont. there will be a gaping hole on the right side if ADA isnt resigned.
He could and he might but that does not change the fact that even if he could, he has years ahead of him until he gets there whereas DeAngelo IS already performing at that level and at his age.
fox is unique. hes been pretty much rock solid since day 1 but even with that, tony is the better player right now and assuming we wont see a steep drop off if we let tony walk is short sided at best, regardless if we have nils or not.
Where is he walking to? Arbitration rights does not mean UFA. Unless the Rangers move him, he is going nowhere for a while. After arbitration rights expire, he becomes an RFA. That is presuming that he has already not signed a long term deal. The amount of teams willing to take chances with offer sheets is incredibly low.

Who and how? He is not turning UFA

Yes, I understand. As I said, if he keeps this up, he will get paid. If we don't shell out the dollars we'll be forced to regrettably trade him and some other team will give him what he wants with a smile on their face.

Absolutely, best case scenario for us is he, Fox & Troubs pairs rotate and basically one of those three is on the entire game.

Amazing situation right there.

Both ADA and Fox are so unique. They make each other better and our team better because one of them is on the ice over 2/3rds of the game. There are certainly players who can put up points like ADA but he is not a player who is easily replaced. His skating, vision, and passing is insanely good. We all know he isn't the greatest defensively, but he is not a dumpster fire. He has improved and has shown to be pretty capable back there. When paired with the right partner, he is absolutely a first line dman.

I feel like lose implies we wouldn't get a substantial trade return.

Like what, more picks? We need him more than we need the late 1st we'd get back. Lock him up and our right side is set for the forseeable future. I think Trouba makes too much money but he's still young and a solid player so I can deal with it. Our left side is where we need to cut the fat. Unfortunately those contracts are so bad I don't see how we can move any of them. But if DeAngelo scores 50+ this season he's going to want (and deserve) big Years and big Money and it would be a mistake to let him go. Kreider we can trade but i'd rather hold on to Strome and Lemiuex.

You paint the worse scenario possible. That is still a ways to go until he is done with arbitration rights.

I have no doubt that he will get his worth. However, let's not pretend that he is not going to get paid as if he is a top of the NHL defenseman. He will get paid his due. Is that $4m? $4.5m? $5m? It all is up to him.

I'm definitely not a ADA hater. But I'm absolutely a hater of the small Tony D fan club who whines about nonexistent criticism all day every day.

It's a good insurance policy if they trade him though. The Tony Truthers will burn this thread to the ground.

Are you on social media? HF is the most educated site for hockey discussion and I’d expect people to leave personal bias out much moreso than on Reddit or Twitter. But there is a significant contingent of Ranger fans on Twitter who bash ADA left & right, as well as some certain podcasters. There are people who unabashedly proclaim their hatred of ADA is personal and has nothing to do with his on ice performance, Blueshirt Banter brings up ADA being traded basically every podcast and talks about his baggage and how many personal issues he has as if he’s killed someone.

Yeah and Greg from blueshirts breakaway has a very strong grudge against him after DeAngelo bad mouthed the Mets...since then he's been trashing DeAngelo every time he can.

I'd rather move Skjei than ADA. With Lindgren, Hajek, Rykov and eventually Miller and Robertson, I feel like we could have depth there.

Also with the expansion draft coming, we need to make some tough decisions. I'd keep Fox and ADA over all current defensemen, they are true game changers imo.

lol is that why?
Yep. After DeAngelo said something along the lines of...come on Mets fans we all know new York only has 1 baseball team...or something like that, Greg went ape shit and since then he's been trashing him as much as he can

I love those guys, they've got a great podcast, some great banter, are funny, etc. But they're not perfect. Nobody is.

Except maybe Margot Robbie.

Wait, New York has more than one baseball team? I thought the Dodgers and Giants left in '57. It's also okay not to agree with everyone. We dont want echo chambers and hive minds

Also more of a Shakira guy.

You do realize DeAngelo has the second worst plus minus on the team and that stat is justified. Defensively, he isn't great. Of course, our fans tend to focus on offense for our defenseman which is probably what Quinn does which is why the team is dead last in shots given up in the league. I like him on the PP. However, he's still a liability defensively. IMO, if they think Lundkvist is the real deal, I believe they will package DeAngelo if he's having a big year, along with a prospect or two and go for a big, young, second center to fill out the top 2 lines. Fox already looks much better defensively. I just wish Fox and DeAngelo were about 2 inches taller.

DeAngelo led our entire blueline last season with a +6 ( +10 higher than the 2nd place defenseman)? and DeAngelo is 2nd in Corsi among our defensemen this season
