I don't know how many people have played Dark Souls... but ADA reminds me of the Chaos Blade. His pluses greatly outweigh the negatives when used correctly.

He's a game-changer/baller IMO. He also gives me the feeling he'd be a playoff performer

Agreed! ADA is one of those guys who is a gamechanger and I've seen way more good than bad this season. A lot of people on these boards talk if him being the odd man out but I think he may be the most unique of the bunch. He is so fun to watch with the puck it's incredible. He is silly smooth and makes things happen. We need the guy and i love his edge that he brings

No one talks about him being the odd man out. The only thing that people have said is that depending on the progress of some of the kids, he MAY be looked at as a piece that can be moved to shore up another area.

But most see him as a part of the solution.

Compounding that, is how we handle the expansion draft. The best player we will be forced to expose, looks, for the moment, like it will be a defender.

Trouba/Skjei/ADA/Lindren/Hajek all are eligible, and we can only protect 3 of them (if we go the 7+3 route)

Will admit my ignorance at how the rules on the expansion draft work, but is that correct? Two will be left open? That cannot be, can it? I can seek Skjei being exposed regardless. But cannot see them exposing the other 4 defensemen.

You can either protect 7 forwards and 3 D, or 8 skaters total

Trouba is an auto-protect because of his NMC, so they'd have to choose 2 from DeAngelo/Skjei/Hajek/Lindgren

But so much can happen between now and then, it may not be an issue

I cannot see the likes of Hajek and Lindgren being let go. Skjei probably, but yes, a lot can happen.

A lot can change over the course of the season, but right now I think it would be absolutely insane to move ADA or even think about exposing him due to some fretting over “balance” on defense. Keep your best players. Keeping Skjei, Hajek, or Lindgren over ADA because they are left handed is just crazy talk to me. And I like those players - I would like to keep them all.

Again if we are talking about moving ADA for a young stud at F I can be convinced. But I’m not shuttling him out of town to accommodate those players and handedness balance on D.

Should the situation arise, I could see the team maybe making a deal with Seattle to not take a player

I would also reckon a guess that a situation could arise where Skjei and/or DeAngelo aren't still here when expansion happens

Again a lot of things can change

I really didn't see how he would be able to force himself into this go-to role and post these kinds of numbers. I still think his defense holds him back from being a true elite defender, but he absolutely looks the part of an elite offensive defenseman. He's proving me wrong so far--and I like it.

I also think something that can’t be overlooked is the impact a guy like Trouba has on the alignment of the right side. When you have someone capable of being on the ice close to half the game, it allows you to follow that up with a guy like ADA and not have to deploy him in situations that potentially expose him or hinder his effectiveness. Essentially you can play to his strengths. You can’t do that with Shattenkirk and Pionk as the other options.

That’s a HUGE difference from last season.

I don’t know about today, but wasn’t Skjei-DeAngelo the top pairing the past few games? I thought they were getting more ice time and some of the tougher assignments, but I may be wrong.

They’re not sheltered by any stretch, but Trouba’s also only a handful of games removed from a 26 minute night.

There were a few times when, for a split second, i thought it was Panarin that was muling the puck up the ice, but it was ADA.

No, he's not a Panarin equivalent, but he has that shiftiness.

Think the sample size is big enough now that you can't really question what he brings to the table. Super high skill guys like him don't usually regress and instead get better and better over time (see Ryan Ellis)

He can put up 40 points with his eyes closed every season as long as he avoids doing whatever it was that was getting him benched last season

Gorton will certainly be kicking himself for not being able to see his potential in the summer and did whatever he could to move someone and shed salary to get DeAngelo signed to a longer contract.

Yeah, if that Nam trade happens earlier, we could potentially save like 2m/y on cap. Now we're looking at 5m/y-ish.

Dude is going to get PAID.

9 points in his last 6 games.

Also tied in 3rd in points on the team with Mika.

I mean, they obviously saw his potential. If they didn't see his potential they wouldn't have acquired him and then they wouldn't have worked with him as extensively as they did.

I think it was pretty clearly a matter of "Do we have faith he can keep it together?" or something like that. They had concerns about the player and whether he would be able to fulfill the potential. You can certainly make an argument that they were too cautious or maybe the concerns were actually unfounded, but I don't know about not seeing his potential. Everyone has seen his potential since a couple years before he was drafted.

If they didn't think he had the potential to be special he wouldn't have played last year and he probably wouldn't be here now.

This guy is pretty good at hockey. It's a shame the Rangers will have to trade him because another guy eats minutes for 2 Spooner's a year
