Here's how Luszczyszyn describes him in his preview piece in the Athletic.

2019-20 NHL Season Preview: New York Rangers

Pretty much jibes with how I view him as well. The good with the bad.
Yup, sounds about right. Defensive positioning and stickwork can be learned and improved over time. His combination of vision and playmaking ability is an extremely rare gift. Rotate him and Fox between the 2nd/3rd pairing until one of them proves they're a legitimate top-4 defenseman.

His silky smooth skating plus last seasons play peg him as the clear cut middle pair RD. There is only the bottom 6 RD spot open, imo

I can't understand how Fox and ADA should rotate to prove who's the top 4 RD, if Fox ain't even proven he's a NHLer right now ...

Fox can be handed that, but ADA has to still prove us he's top 4 ? ... Just f***ing play ADA and profit.

Too many people ignore the D part of being a defenceman. I'm not saying ADA wont be good enough, I'm saying too many people here arent even considering that part of his game

That's the last straw for the counter-argumentation in this issue: his D sucks and you don't even consider it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say absolutely we did consider that part and found it a) not as bad as claimed and b) in regards to his other qualities (and his role as offensive-defenseman) rather negligible. Good back-ckecking and system can absorb one (or many) shaky defenseman, let's not distract from the fact that our offense had to help several pylons on defense (Pionk, Staal, Smith, Shat)/ we had to pair ADA with several pylons.

i watched tony early when he was here with syracuse. saw him alot in person. hes the same player today as he was then. same guy.

gifted offensively. frequently/usually one of the best players on the ice. poised. smart. fluid. confident and brash. crisp passer with his head on a swivel and his feet always moving. he looks so fluid out there like relaxed puck handling and proper positioning (O zone) is just oozing out of him.

defensively hes more than game but too often is caught out of position and chasing. he has stretches of mental lapses in the D zone costing him his coverage and can at times lose his assignments and look lax. bigger guys can muscle him but hes skilled at taking pucks away and uses his stick well. he yaps and makes faces and talks trash. he doesnt back down and likes to mix it up after the whistle.

thats ADA in syracuse and still applies today.

hes a keeper. love his swag and his river boat gambler skill set. ill take 45 points and some defensive lapses every day. thank you.

leave him alone and let him play. who cares if hes a choir boy or not. mark messier was a SOB on the ice. not everyone is the same.

pair him with 76 and leave them alone

I like Tony, I'm just not sure why everyone clamors to him like he is Brian Leetch. He is average defensively, above average offensively and has some quirks about him most teams dont want on their bench. I'd be surprised if he is with this team in 2 years between prospects we have coming that will play for league minimum at or above his level and what will be his asking price. I wouldn't fall too far in love with him, he is somewhat of a stop gap for the Rangers.

I can't emphasize the "not everyone " part of what I said enough.

YOU may have considered the defensive aspect of ADA's game. I'm very happy for you as an individual. I regret my inability to give you gold star stickers.

That doesn't really mean anything when I'm talking in general about this board. This board historically overrates the offensive part of a defense-man's game and spares barely a word for the defensive side.

If ADA's defensive game stagnates then we will see a ton of complaining all year by people completely ignoring if his performance overall just doesn't merit a top 4 spot.

We saw it all last year too. Everytime the guy got scratched it was horror and despair all over this place. He'd work on his shit and play great on his return. It was working for him.

It's just funny to see him blindly penciled in and ALL of the talk is about his passing and skating. That's going to be mitigated if he ends up losing his man too often, gets coned, doesn't cover the front of the net adequately and/or gives up zone entries at a level commensurate with being a bottom pair Dman.

That's the last straw for the counter-argumentation in this issue: his D sucks and you don't even consider it.

Too many people assume that defensemen who are good offensively, are automatically bad defensively.

Agh, he wasn't that bad. He is still very young and this year is the biggest one yet for him from a 'prove it' standpoint. Let his playing answer the questions.

I feel like all of you are attributing other people's arguments to me.

Unless someone hijacked my account all last year, deleted all of my "Be patient with ADA, he looks great, he's just working on stuff" posts and replaced them with mindless complaints.

Just bc this place overall sucks at evaluating the defensive side of the game and ignores it doesn't mean I'm saying ADA sucks at D or that he is going to be trash. I mean exactly what I said, too many people here ignore it. There's no agenda there to shit on ADA.

Actually, the one thing i see working against ADA is the Expansion Draft. Trouba & Skjei arent going to be exposed. Staal will have to be if he is still here. All the rest of our young D are exempt due to age/status. ADA might be the sacrificial lamb, or traded to get an asset in return before it comes to that.

Not entirely correct, going by what we know right now.

Trouba is the only mandatory protection on D. Skjei, while likely to be protected, is not a mandatory protection. Staal won't have to be protected as he'll be a UFA that summer (same with Hank).

In fact, the only mandatory protections the Rangers will have in the expansion draft (due to NMC) as of right now are: Panarin, ZBad, Trouba

Brady shall be the lamb.

I'm surprised ADA hadn't signed yet. Any news at all? I guess he still has a day or so. Friday the 13th...

Not a Rangers fan at all but am a big believer in ADA if these idiot's with their old school mentality will just get out of the way and let the kid play. He was your best defenseman last year at the end of the season and by no means poor defensively... I really believe he has all star written all over him if he is just given the chance. The idea of Fox being ahead of him on the depth chart is ludicrous to me.

Alrighty. I’m convinced.

Lock him up. 7X7 with a full NMC.

Most of here here see the potential of a very very good offensive dman. It is quite puzzling to be playing around over a few hundred thousand dollars when a team is in the middle of a rebuild and this is the time you want to develop your top young prospects. But hey, I'm not the GM.

Do we know that the issue is over a few hundred thousands dollars though?

You're right; they should trade Kreider for a 5th so they can cave and give Tony every penny he wants based off of his season being sat 25% of the time for disciplinary purposes, wherein his "by no means poor" defense proved that he couldn't once move a man out of the crease..

Sigh.

Could be true.

Up to him to sign the 1 year deal and earn his star contract. He's not a star yet, and he won't become one by holding out.

It's not like we are choosing not to give him a long term deal. We don't have the cap space.
