That has as much validity as believing that DeAngelo is the second coming
Nobody believes that.

Look at Adam McQuaid. He blocks shots, he initiates, he attacks anyone who looks at one of his teammates funny, he fights the toughest guys in the league.

Some value it, some don't, many fall in the middle, but McQuaid does it.

When is the last time McLeod did any of that?

Whether you care about the grit game is irrelevant with McLeod. He doesn't bring it. Maybe he did at one point, but not in this uniform.

Lost somewhere in much of this baffling debate is that I think everyone wants ADA to succeed.

There's different philosophies and opinions on the best approach, but everyone actually wants the same thing.

Sorry Edge, but on this one I have to disagree.

There are a handful on here that don't because of "reasons".

Interesting that he has worked with a sports psychologist in Soo, Tampa, and Arizona, but won't do it here.

Whatever his issues are I hope he figures them out because he's clearly a talented individual.

I know people get upset about his on-ice time over the course of the season, but I think Quinn has handled him fine. Quinn isn't just molding DeAngelo, but it reflects on all the other younger guys developing in the organization as well. It sets a tone. Tenacity is fine, we see that with Kreider, this seems like something different. That said, DeAngelo is still here, still plays, and there haven't been any bombshell issues - just generic maturity. And we likely see a harder line stance taken by Quinn than other coaches considering his background in dealing with young players, he is used to it at least.

The other end of the benched-spectrum was Buchnevich for his hustle and practice.

Interesting dynamic, but also sets the right tone I think.

I'm sure we'll hear more if someone like Hayes doesn't come back after being traded and does some interviews or podcasts (on spittin chiclets quite a bit) that can give us more insight.

I'm exhausted but doesn't McLeod lead the nhl in fights and is up there in hits?

so just was talking to gianone on twitter. the maturity issues seem to stem from him chirping players and officials. ignoring warnings and a times going over the line. I haven't seen him get a misconduct so I think its ridiculous. the kid plays with a temper for sure and he needs to learn to contain it but man have we not had the most vanilla team ever here for years. we could use some bad guys. I honestly feel that way.
Finally we have our mystery solved (more or less). I also think it’s really stupid to scratch him for chirping players. And him chirping refs is not good, but he hasn’t done anything crazy yet. Still, at least now I get it.

Now, with chirping the refs, you might be onto something. We’ve seen an usual amount of bad calls against the Rangers this season, and also missed calls that should have resulted in a power play for us. And if I remember correctly, there have been a bunch of times where ADA should have drawn a penalty, but the ref didn’t make the call. But let me be very clear: I have no hard evidence for this, and it might just be confirmation bias.

He probably leads the NHL in random, unnecessary fights. I don’t remember him standing up for his teammates, as McQuaid does. Maybe McLeod has fought once to stand up for a teammate this season, but usually it’s just a random, pointless fight.

A guy who plays like 4 mins a game or whatever is probably not going to be on the ice when a play warrants stepping up and fighting someone to protect a teammate....a guys like McQuaid who plays 18or so mins has a much higher probability of doing just that.

So when mccleod does answer the bell and stick up for his teammates...it's going to be in the staged fight type.scenario.

It just is.

If you want a nasty sob who can fight and take a regular shift..you're looking for prime lucic and look at what he is now.

Cody mccleod is a tough sob who does his job well...it's just a job that I think is pointless.

Fair enough. I still prefer McQuaid over McLeod for the enforcer role, as McQuaid is one of the best fighters in the league, and is pretty ok at hockey. At the same time, I’m against guys like that taking roster spots away from more talented players. But that’s a separate thing.

I think fighting is dumb. I think we need more legal checking and less legal fighting.

When DeAngelo is on his game, he is such a joy to watch. He doesn’t throw the puck around mindlessly. His passes are crisp. And he creates time and space with his skating. I also believe he’s underrated defensively. If Quinn sees all of this and feels that his current approach will get the best out of DeAngelo, so be it. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Staal looks worlds better paired with DeAngelo.

I love watching him play he was outstanding last night on both sides of the puck. Play him 20 plus with the top line and they were dominant at times. Just wish they’d commit to him.

Listen Avery was a huge success here because renney and sather let him be himself. They let him be the best version of himself. I’m hoping Quinn wants him to keep that fire but just harness it a bit.

I don’t know if you guys saw it on TV but ADA was screaming at everyone last night too so didn’t seem to be playing like a mouse regardless of what they say they want him to do.

Staal-DeAngelo being able to dominate the toughest matchups also allows Smith-Shattenkirk to get prime offensive deployment where they've done very well. Skjei-McQuaid have also done a lot better when they haven't had to take the tougher assignments, but I'd still like to try Claesson with Skjei when he gets healthy with McQuaid and Pionk as the scratches.

Another great game from him yesterday. Keep the kid in the lineup for crying out loud, he could easily turn into a top #3 defensmean or better. Sad we have been looking for this exact player for a decade and when we finally get one we get a coach more interested in f***ing around with him over nothing that has been visable on the ice. Want to punish him, have him sprint it out by himself after a practice.

You and both know Quinn isn’t scratching Pionk. McQuaid needs to be dealt, which unfortunately leaves a potential Skjei-Pionk pairing.

Brooks not doing any favors in defusing the thought that DeAngelo is a real head case. But yeah, this is Quinn's fault.

Nah keep him in the lineup no matter what. Let him do whatever he wants to. All the coaches and teams that have had a problem with his attitude and maturity are/were wrong. Don't try and actually coach the kid and communicate clearly what you actually expect out of him both on and off the ice.

Pionk is the one getting shuffled around when we play 7D and his 5v5 TOI has gone down a lot. I think there is a chance Quinn is starting to realize that Pionk may not be all that.

DeAngelo is perhaps the only player on this D who should be here long term.

That’s how I feel about it. And, honestly, I’m shopping Skjei to see if someone is willing to pay a premium for a young 2nd pairing Dman. He’s not a difference maker, and isn’t someone you build around. Someone out of Hajek/Rykov is going to slide into that 2nd pairing LD spot, and isn’t going to cost you $5.25 million per.
