I'm glad this came out, even though it's still somewhat vague. A couple weeks ago I poked around on this as I said I would and all I really heard was that the kid was a hot head who showed maturity issues across the board and they're trying to break him of them.

It runs contrary to the whole "play your best players" thing but we're at a point as a franchise where we can afford to not do that, in the name of setting expectations and building a "Rangers way to play." I know that's not okay with some people but I'm good with it, especially as we rebuild.

The context of where the Rangers are right now is important. If this happened a few years ago, a guy like St. Louis would step in and set this kid straight. The Rangers don't have that now. It's very very important for Quinn to run a tight ship in this regard.

Nonsense reason. This is more Quinn than DeAngelo. He did the same thing with Shattenkirk earlier in the year for saying something on the bench. Ever hear of other teams benching players mid-game/healthy scratching them for comments during the game? Almost never. Not saying DeAngelo didn't say something stupid but 99% of coaches would not care/bench/scratch a player for it and Quinn has done it twice now with two different players.

ADA probably ripped one on the bench and Quinn got all offended and is saying Tony is immature so he benches him.

It’s lose lose for Tony, no matter what he does he will be sat with quinn. He just doesnt like him.

It's cute when people have to make stuff up to ignore the issue at hand, especially with DeAngelo's history of, well, being an asshole.

I feel pretty comfortable saying that I don't think it's the farting. Farting on the bench( and in the locker room) is something you kind of get used to once you hit bantams, passing gas is a time-honored tradition and you're more likely to get ice time than be banished for it.

True. If anything, it's a real team builder.

Now, being a dickhead to a coach or a teammate, as is quite clearly the case with DeAngelo, is a different story.

At the end of the day, the coach is the coach. If there's a maturity issue that's keeping a now 23-year old man out of the lineup, than it needs to addressed.

It's not some conspiracy against ADA.

That response, in and of itself, sounds like a maturity issue.

Maturity stuff sounds like he mouthed off to a coach, a teammate or the refs....just a guess of course.

He's done that in the past.

Honestly I like the transparency.

This I can deal with. It makes sense. The random scratches with no explanations is far more annoying and troublesome.

hockey is littered with characters and odd balls and on ice hot heads. its not a popularity contest.

marc messier had many documented issues on ice with keenan. tikanen was a clown. avery. and on and on.

mike keenan was a total asshole when he coached.

our very own and loved torts is a complete dickhead to this day.

in fact, the hockey hall of fame has many members who fit the description. to a T.

thats our problem, we play bland , vanilla, passive hockey. we have no edge. no talent and no grit. talk about a team going no where. college coach bent on teaching lessons to a group without talent and without any emotion.

some how, we acquired this kid knowing his personality and maturity level. according to JG, we wanted this kid and had been on him since he was in syracuse. they weren't aware of this ? trust me, we were.

if its a respect thing, or a disrespect thing, thats not ok. if its an attitude thing or an emotion thing, thats fixable. but there has to be respect BOTH WAYS. these are adults, pro hockey players. these guys arent college kids. even that shatty thing was weird. hes hardly an attitude problem. its quinn.

benching ADA mid game for an emotional reaction seems a bit harsh ? kids playing the best hockey of any dman the last 6 games and carrying the carcass of marc staal up and down the ice. i think its personal with quinn and ADA. obviously.

i think guys like buchnevich and ADA both laugh inside knowing that pukes like pionk and staal play to a level that is well documented (worst in the league corsi) while ADA sits. that would piss me off too.

and buchnevich the same. 8 min with plugs like mcleod and nieves to teach him a lesson. imagine hes upset about that ? who wouldn't be ?

then all this crap about "intentions" to me is code for "ill play guys who suck before ill play talent who doesnt understand that trying and busting ass is more important than natural talent and production on the ice during a game".

its all about teaching lessons with quinn and his favorites are teflon. play your best practice players with good intentions who suck during games ?? huh ?

just like hes back in college teaching lessons to kids who wont sniff the nhl.

not a quinn fan at all.

Hey, heres an idea. How about putting 2 and 2 together and realizing the "random" scratches most likely weren't too random.

I'll free up some time for myself and not write a long response to this word salad. All I'll say is it seems very easy for Buchnevich and DeAngelo to fix their issues. This is on them - especially in DeAngelo's case where he's seemingly had a lot of people not like him.

I 100 percent agree.

All those bland, talentless hacks having career years. Damn Zibanejad, and Hayes, and Kreider --- those hard-working, talentless, vanilla, lunch-pale bastards! Damn them all!

How they manage to achieve with Quinn is beyond comprehension.

I mean, where's the damn grit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????

I don't even know what ADA said or did, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let the coach tell me that he felt it crossed a line! Who in the *@#! does he think he is?!?!?!?!?!

He's treating all this kids like they're in college, even though some of them are old enough to still be there. How DARE he guide them and set expectations. For Chrissakes, when has discipline and expectations ever gotten a player anywhere in this life?

I say %&!@ Quinn, !@$! him right in the ear! That bean eating nobody!

True. If anything, it's a real team builder.

Now, being a ******** to a coach or a teammate, as is quite clearly the case with DeAngelo, is a different story.

It's clear that ADA has to do SOMETHING different.

But its not really clear he is being a dick to his coach or teammates. Immaturity can mean a lot of things, this really isn't any less vague than before.

Tony DeAngelo is still part of the future core so he has lot of time to figure it out.

Nonsense reason. This is more Quinn than DeAngelo. He did the same thing with Shattenkirk earlier in the year for saying something on the bench. Ever hear of other teams benching players mid-game/healthy scratching them for comments during the game? Almost never.

Agreed

We’ve always got to have clean cut nice young men on this team. We worry more about that than we do if they are actually talented. There’s a reason we haven’t developed a star player outside of hank since Brian Leetch who himself used to go out and get fall down drunk whenever he felt like it.

It's cute when people have to make stuff up to ignore the issue at hand, especially with DeAngelo's history of, well, being an *******.
"History" cute. Lay out his "history" for me. We have absolutely zero info aside from 2 extremely vague comments by Quinn this season.

hockey is littered with characters and odd balls and on ice hot heads. its not a popularity contest..

You're right, it is. But any oddball elements of eccentric behavior better come with production and on-ice value.

marc messier had many documented issues on ice with keenan. tikanen was a clown. avery. and on and on.

Messier also knew that the team could win with Tikkanen.

mike keenan was a total ******* when he coached.

He was. And you could an argument that the Cup team won in spite of him, not because of him.

our very own and loved torts is a complete ******** to this day.
Not sure he was universally loved. Getting suspended for a playoff game is certainly not a good move for the team. But wasn't he an example someone whose histrionics are only tolerated because they come with a level of success?

hats our problem, we play bland , vanilla, passive hockey. we have no edge. no talent and no grit. talk about a team going no where. college coach bent on teaching lessons to a group without talent and without any emotion.

If the team is bereft of talent and grit—and that is largely the case—how are they to play exciting hockey? And I don't think they are passive and they think that they play hard by and large.

some how, we acquired this kid knowing his personality and maturity level. according to JG, we wanted this kid and had been on him since he was in syracuse. they weren't aware of this ? trust me, we were.

1) There was a reason he was available
2) This team hardly has a stellar record when it comes to talent evaluation. So the idea that JG has coveted him since Syracuse is not a huge feather in his cap.

if its a respect thing, or a disrespect thing, thats not ok. if its an attitude thing or an emotion thing, thats fixable. but there has to be respect BOTH WAYS. these are adults, pro hockey players. these guys arent college kids. even that shatty thing was weird. hes hardly an attitude problem. its quinn.

ADA is a kid who real world would be a 2-3 years out of college. Respect is earned.

The "Shatty thing" was Quinn going after one of "his guys". So maybe it's not a personal thing with ADA.

benching ADA mid game for an emotional reaction seems a bit harsh ? kids playing the best hockey of any dman the last 6 games and carrying the carcass of marc staal up and down the ice. i think its personal with quinn and ADA. obviously.

It's not obvious. If the coach has a standard and a player doesn't meet it who cares whether whether it was an emotional reaction or not?

i think guys like buchnevich and ADA both laugh inside knowing that pukes like pionk and staal play to a level that is well documented (worst in the league corsi) while ADA sits. that would piss me off too.

If those guys have that attitude, it goes a long way to explaining why they haven't been able to cement a spot in on a bad hockey team where there playing time is there for the taking. Staal, like it or not, is an established, veteran NHL player. Is there a double standard? Probably, but thats common place. You think Bill Parcels didn't have a different standard for Lawrence Taylor than he did the back-up long snapper?

buchnevich the same. 8 min with plugs like mcleod and nieves to teach him a lesson. imagine hes upset about that ? who wouldn't be ?
Effort doesn't require talent. Maybe Buch can learn by watching those two plugs that you can do something to give an honest shift, contribute and add value even if you don't score a goal. There's a reason guys like McLeod and McQuid are on this team.

then all this crap about "intentions" to me is code for "ill play guys who suck before ill play talent who doesnt understand that trying and busting ass is more important than natural talent and production on the ice during a game".
This sounds oversimplified and laced with conjecture. Quinn is trying to build a culture. Effort is important. Effort doesn't take talent. Lots of talented guys have come through this league—hell, through this team—who have flamed out because the effort wasn't there.

its all about teaching lessons with quinn
Sounds good to me.

and his favorites are teflon.

This is hyperbole. You even mentioned his benching of Shattenkirk—who is definitely one of his guys.

play your best practice players with good intentions who suck during games ?? huh ?

A coach is setting expectations. And I don't think those expectations are ridiculou or even that hard to meet.

not a quinn fan at all.

That's clear!

This thread and the Buch thread are identical.

Simplest answer to the question is know known to be correct.

Quinn is developing and changing culture.

But people get all whiny when their pet is sat for NOT DOING HIS JOB! Not doing what the coach asks of him.

That’s on Buch and ADA no matter what anyone wants to argue to the contrary. It doesn’t matter if they’re better players than X, Y or Z

THEY WONT PLAY UNTIL THEY LEARN
