Lol he really hasn’t been bad on defense at all. Ironically, I think he’s been better defensively than all but 2 of our defensemen (which isn’t much of an accomplishment, but if he gets sh*t for his defense, then so should every other NYR defenseman).

I have always felt like he was actually pretty good defensively. A lot of his reads are terrific.

Ask yourself. ...how many times is DeAngelo facing an odd man rush...if it's a lot..that's not his fault..that's his partners. And vice versa.

You're seeing a disproportionate number of odd man rushes for DeAngelo versus what his partners have been getting.

DeAngelo plus mcdonagh woulda been great to watch last year.

I have noticed that as well. I would have expected the reverse to be true (ADA pinching and leaving his partner out to dry), but nope. ADA is actually playing quite conservative and smart.

Skjei, Staal, Smith, and whoever else plays with ADA, you’re not Karlsson or Burns. Stop pinching. Especially if you’re a slow skater. Let ADA do it, if it must be done.

Easily a 40 pt Dman. If he can improve his shot he’s a 60 pts guy...

I am blown away at how fast he can get into the pace of a game and just move the puck around. And there is never any kind of hesitation to just make a simple short pass when needed, or go for a smaller margin play if its there.

TDA must of course improve his consistency and he is a little weak defensively. But I definitely think he has potential.

Two primary points last night while only getting 1 second of PP time. If Quinn is doubling down on Pionk on the PP, at least play two of the three RD's on the second unit to get a good RH shot at the left circle if you're not going to play Zibanejad the entire PP.

He is now tied for the team lead (including forwards) in primary 5v5 points despite playing in only three games and despite being a defenceman. For reference, the ranking among NYR defencemen is as follows:

DeAngelo: 3P1 in 3GP
Smith: 2P1 in 11GP
McQuaid: 1P1 in 8GP
Staal: 1P1 in 11GP
Skjei: 1P1 in 11GP
Pionk: 0P1 in 9GP
Shattenkirk: 0P1 in 10 GP

Letang currently leads the league with 6P1 5v5 in 9GP and Josi Karlsson led the league in P1/GP 5v5 last year with 21P1 in 75GP 21P1 in 71GP.

Now this rate is obviously hugely unsustainable, but the point is that he is basically the one player on the team that has been able to make the puck go into the net at 5v5 so far.

That sequence where he got his assist, he was just filthy. Uber silky smooth, great hands, great instincts. Guy needs to play, straight up. Pionk shouldn’t be playing over him, but I’ve given up hope on NHL coaches making good roster decisions, so hopefully he can solidify his spot with the injuries giving him a chance.

Uhhhhh yeah. He should because he's better than him all around. This stupid love for TDA was the same garbage I heard for Buchnevich who is now a hot, pile of garbage they will be lucky to get any return for.

Boy I don't know. He's definitely very talented, but over the past 3 seasons there have been 4, 2, and 6 guys to hit 60 points from the blue line. Again, very talented, but I'm not ready to say that even with an improved shot he's one of the top five elite offensive defenders in the game.

He had a good game and, unlike last time he played, it wasn't combined with several bad misreads in the defensive zone (not me saying his last game should've resulted in his benching).

Here is the issue I have, or should say, will have if he is benched.

I like Quinn. I think he is doing a good job so far. But, for all the talk about practice, the goal DeAngelo scored was 100% due to his commitment to out work the other guy and win that puck. This is a kid who wants to play and as a coach tasked with developing young guys, ADA should be playing as long as he continues to give an IN GAME effort like this.

Now, I am not saying ADA should be allowed to half ass it in practice or anything. But that goal sequence is a perfect example of why we should be willing to work with the mistakes he makes.

I agree with this, to a large extent. Effort isn't the only thing, though. If a player is struggling to execute the system the way the coach wants in practice, it's a whole other issue. That being said, I saw DeAngelo holding place in front of the net during the times his partner was in the corner or on the boards every shift he played in the defensive zone yesterday. That's one of the things we know Quinn wants. He made the right choices as far as passing or dumping out in the defensive zone as well. I didn't see any signs of what looked like execution problems, which I don't think we could say about either of the other games he played. If that continues, clearly the work in practice paid off.

Lets pump the brakes
There's a group of people on the board that dislike the kid for reasons unrelated to hockey, some others that are way too hard on him for what he does on the ice, and yet another group that seems like they're ready to build this kid up to a level he may never be able to hit, which will then lead to disappointment. Not accusing anyone in particular of any of these things. Just saying.

I shared a similar sentiment with Pionk, though with different descriptors: why can't we all just acknowledge that ADA is a very talented young player, who has a bit of a checkered past and who the coaching staff is working with, that will hopefully blossom once he puts the whole package together?

I would guess because a lot of the board has conditioned themselves to distrust the coaching staff over the last 3 seasons, understandably so in some ways. Less understandably in other ways.

I do agree. I see a kid that is trying. A kid that has talent. And a kid that in limited showings, appears if he can produce. I would hope that we don't get into another AV situation here where the "system" outweighs those other aspects. It is way to early to tell if that is the case and personally, I don't think it is.

i hate to continually bash pionk but he has been a dumpster fire 5v5 so far this year @ManUtdTobbe can provide the stats to back this up

just because he has put up a few points on the PP doesnt necessarily mean he has played well this year, every time i watch him out there i cringe :help:

ADA is probably the one glaring area where I disagree with Quinn thus far.

I'm all for wanting to mold ADA into the type of player who can use his skill set to be successful at the NHL. I'm all for demanding his best or close to it on a more consistent basis.

But with that said, I feel like ADA is at the point where he really needs to sink or swim. And with that, the Rangers owe him some wiggle room to learn, grow and make mistakes. Warts and all, the kid has more points than all but 7 players on the NHL roster, despite playing in the fewest games of any skater. At some point, the in-game results have to matter more than the practices and I find it somewhat hard to believe that there's this much of a disconnect between the two.
