I'm just really confused by why he isn't getting an opportunity. it's not even that I am angry, I just don't really understand why he would be the odd-man out consistently when both his underlying numbers and on-ice play have been solid for anyone let alone a recently turned 23 year old. It's like they are assuming 22-23 year old RD's with high offensive ceilings just drop from the sky...
He’s not a finished product... it’s what this franchise does with offensive defenseman.. they expect them to walk in and be a finish product and when they have set backs(even minor ones) they bench em and say “you can play again when you can prove you’re a Norris Trophy candidate defensively”. We did it we MDZ, a lesser extent to Yandle, and we’re doing it to ADA now.

Idk why we expect our offensive defensemen to be soo good defensively but don’t hold our normal defensemen to the same standard

This is probably already too late, but let's give Quinn more than one month to coach DeAngelo his way before we lose our minds.

Pretty much it's all speculation.

But why Staal continues to play I think has more to do with his being a left hander playing the left side. Because of the dearth of right handed D around the league it's almost unheard of that a right handed D switches over to the left side. And IMO none (not just ADA but Pionk, Shattenkirk and McQuaid) of our right D are good enough in their own end of the ice that I'd want to be moving them to their off side. So I don't see good reason for Staal even to be in this argument. Smith by the way is no great shakes playing on the right side as a left shot either. `

FWIW all this is probably just a numbers games for the Rangers coaching staff and they like Shattenkirk, McQuaid and Pionk over DeAngelo. Shattenkirk is the big $ guy with a history of running power plays. McQuaid is the physical stay at home guy who you can throw out on the penalty kill. It hurts DeAngelo IMO that Shattenkirk has the big contract and blocks his way with his offensive history and suspect defensive play that leaves the coaching staff wary of sticking him on the penalty kill. Been saying this for a while--DeAngelo needs to show he has an all around game that he can be depended on to play in all situations. And I know Smith can switch over for penalty killing duty but in in-game situations that switch can cause inconveniences and playing (or adjusting for) two d-men from the same right side on any given night who you're leery of putting on your penalty kill goes from being a handicap to a double handicap.

Right now I think DeAngelo's way into the lineup is be patient and wait for an injury. But eventually I think the Rangers are going to move on from him.

Funny how all this reminds me of the conversations we use to have about McIlrath.

Mcilrath was slow footed and couldn't hockey. DeAngelo isnt either of those things but he needs to get his stuff together, whatever the issue is it's been following him around since he was drafted and it's time to take the advice of this coaching staff and get on with his career before he ends up in the AHL.

My latest theory: Quinn is trying to bring the team together around ADA.

I never said that McIlrath and DeAngelo played the same kind of game. There are obvious differences between the two players but also a few similiarities. What I was inferring though is that there was a lot of complaining that Dylan didn't get in the lineup back then and there's a lot of complaining that Tony's not getting in the lineup now. Both being victims of a numbers game or seemingly being the odd man out.

IMO he makes a Shatts trade very viable. Let's say he actually plays.

Come on Quinny.

And he outproduces Shatts... Which isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Tony D is going to get bridged. Let's face it.. 3 teams... Trades... Consistency and all.

That will allow the Rangers to retain ona Shatts deal... Today.

And pay Tony Did once the retention expires.

So to me, it's just a matter of asset management. One that Quinny hasn't done a great job of outside of a couple of games when it comes to his RHD.

Let's say Shatts at 50% for 2.5 years gets you a 1st and a 2nd for the retention.

And on top of that you get 2 other assets.

Guess what, if Tony D is good enough... You get the production with the assets.

This is what I'd like to see.

Miller, for sure.
Super raw but maybe, he’s who I have second. He has great athleticism and all the tools, I’m just hoping he develops a lot more defensively and that he isn’t simply a product of being bigger and stronger than all the other kids he’s playing with. A lot of his skillset is still that of a forward

Wisconsin/Miller just finished their series with Michigan Tech. MT has one player who is 19 and every single other player is aged 20-24. So most of the opposition was two years older than him, some were six! Now he's obviously a physical specimen and that will be an advantage, but in college he's going to be playing primarily against guys that have a couple years on him and are very physically mature. So, it's really unlikely he gets by on his size and strength alone.

Looked absolutely great on offense, no question. Continues to be dicey on defense, IMO.

He may be terrible in his own zone, but other than Pionk and Skjei is there anyone else we even care to play? Let him learn in game a little more.

Staal was on for three goals tonight (2 on PK). Shatty and Smith on for the game winner. Skjei was on with Staal for the 3rd goal against. D'Angelo had 1g 1a and wasnt on for a single goal against (the only D who can say this today). Sure theyre sheltering him. Sure he's gonna make mistakes. And yes they're easy to spot. But the team's overall D is very very mediocre. The breakout. The possession through the neutral zone. The power play. This guy can have a real impact on that. We need to help this guy succeed in any way we can because he can really play. Even if we're going to trade him down the road we should be increasing his value.

if ADA wasnt "dicey on defense" he would be a first pair righty pmd and a potential allstar.

if chris krieder understood the game of hockey, he would be unstoppable. see how that works

hes a kid. he can skate and he can create. patience grasshopper. kid can play

bottom line, if this kid gets major minutes and pp time, his stat line will be consistently good.

hes a kid with enormous offensive talent. his understanding of offensive hockey is high end. hes a natural play making dman.

kids gotta play.
