Tom Wilson, 20 goals and counting

You also implied he is one of the most feared fighters in the league, which is laughable. Being in the 90th percentile in height and weight doesn't make you a feared fighter.
Where?

"He's fought guys like Joe Thornton, take a look at his hockey fight db and you'll see him give up height and lbs quite a few times."

There is 0 implication there. That is 100% factual statements in response to someone saying he exclusively fights smaller guys.

I did say that's he's one of the top guys you wouldn't want to fight, I don't thin that implies he's a good "feared fighter", I literally said the next sentence that Chara doesn't fight a lot but no one wants to fight him either.

What else could that possibly mean? Why would you not want to fight him if not because he's a feared fighter? Because he's such a nice guy you don't want to hurt him?

Sharks gonna win even 1 series this year? Anybody wanna put a large sum of their own money on the Sharks winning a single Playoff Series?
Eh. Sharks are a pretty good team. They're third in the league. You make it sound like they are a team just barely clinging on to a wild card spot, and haven't been winning quite a few series lately.

Tom Wilson isn't picking on weaker opponents and it's not fear stopping him from certain fights. The problem I have with Wilson is the way he picks and chooses fights, it's always on his grounds. He'll chase a guy for throwing a big hit on his teammate, but ignores requests if it's from a hit that he threw. I really hate this type of mentality of only fighting when you're in the mood.

It's almost as if Tom Wilson fights when he has the green light from his coaches and when it won't hurt his team.

You didn’t answer the question. And there’s no one on earth who will tell you the Sharks haven’t underachieved in the Playoffs lately which is now their standard to bear.

One of the major reasons the Caps were able to shed that label is.....you guessed it, the player every non-Caps fan in this thread wouldn’t take over Tomas Hertl.

I always get the impression from Wilson that he thinks he's a big shot and everyone needs to get in line on their knees if they want an audience with him. He disappeared in the game after Gudbranson challenged him earlier this weak, but not out of fear. He wanted to de-escalate the situation, because he wasn't in the mood for a big fight and didn't think it was worth being targeted. Since the playoffs his ego has been greatly inflated to the point where he thinks he can goon it up, but is too good of a player to have to deal with lower class goons.
You aren't wrong but that's basically hockey now. Also the fact that's he a top line player now really hampers him in just going anyone because honestly, that's stupid.

When Tom entered the league Trotz put him in an awful position at such a young age, he basically played him as a goon when he was a first round pick. Just awful decision making and this is Barry's biggest albatross as a coach, he can't properly grow and utilize young talent. ANYWAY, Wilson fought everyone then but at this point he doesn't and shouldn't, he's too valuable.

No hate. Just the truth. Prior to the past two seasons he was a bottom six goon who was a liability on the ice. That isn’t entirely the case anymore.
Wilson was never a liability. Even before he started producing offensively. He has always been a physical presence and has always been a defensively responsible player. He also draws a lot of penalties.

I don't necessarily think 20 goals is out of the question, though it's probably on the high side for him.

He's scoring at a 31 goal rate this season. I'll happily make an avatar bet with you if you want to bet whether or not he'll score 30 next season.
Seriously, I like you. Why don’t we split the difference? Let’s make this bet official (and mind you I’ve never had an avatar to my name on this site). If Wilson SCORES 25+ Next Season I choose your avatar. If he DOESN’T I’ll let you choose mine. Reasonable enough?, again I’m waiting for you to put something where your mouth is.

Sure, why not?

So long as the avatar chosen isn't offensive (racist, homophobic, etc).

How long does the loser have the new avatar for?

I’m offensive, I can promise my avatar choice will be far more reserved. The new avatar is for a period of one season. You IN or OUT?

Zdeno Chara, not a fighter, if you polled the league though most guys would say they would rather not fight him.

I think you're downplaying the advantage of size and reach.

I know you know the sport better than this, so it has to be personal bias clouding the rest. Does Tom Wilson owe the Penguins a shot at him every time they play until the Penguins win one? Why? What does he owe Gudbranson of all people, a guy he has no significant history with who just wants to prove something to his new team?

You're asking one of the team's more important players to put his health at risk down the stretch whenever anyone else stands in line and decides they want a crack... but you don't see a problem with it. In fact, you think to do anything else is somehow wrong? Well, this is what you wanted, Pens fans, a thinking hockey player instead of a hothead with the bloodlust. Sorry you didn't plan ahead and got him into that whole "thinking about what he's doing" thing, because it'd be a lot easier to sucker him out of the playoffs if he didn't.

Stop comparing Chara to Thornton. Chara not only has the size advantage, he has incredibly strength and fighting ability. Thornton is not in the same league. It is baffling to me that you kept putting Joe Thornton of all people in an an elite tier of intimidating fight opponents.

My point is if Joe Thornton is the hook you are hanging your hat on to prove Tom Wilson takes on tough opponents in fights, your hat will end up on the floor. I have not looked at Wilson's fight card, I find it hard to imagine Thornton is the toughest customer he's dropped the gloves against. Someone mentioned he's faced Ryan Reaves multiple times, that would be a much better example than Jumbo Joe.

Wilson was playing with the Caps before Trotz even got there. So how do you blame Trotz? It was Oates that used Wilson as a 4th line goon.

It's not.... it's literally the person I chose to show he faces bigger opponents.

We're right back to the first post.
