Wow,what a thing to wake up to! IMO, this changes the entire team mentality. It shows that Zito is not afraid to trade a "superstar".

I actually brought this up in the Free Agent Frenzy thread.

Hey @Jean Luc Discard - what do think of Huberdeau for a signed/extended Matthew Tkachuk.

A lot of talk this morning on SiriusXM about the Flames. Pierre LeBruen especially spoke that with Johnny Hockey going to Columbus for less money/term than the Flames offered it seems like the writing is on the wall for Tkachuk to leave after this season.

As was previously stated, he would provide a different element to this team that many, including me, feel the team needs.

And i think the same Situation was faceing Florida next Season with Huberdeau, beside no one spoke about it yet.
The Huberdeau trade rumours, floating around now since when. Florida dropped out against NJ.
And since this crazy french Interview this Season, i mention it in the GDT Thread. He spoke like he dont feel 100% sure in Florida.

CGY might get Weegar, 1st they need, Cole Schwindt who might is a real good prospect.
But CGY will have Huberdeau only for one Year, i see him going Home for less and next Season they can afford him.

Wow holy f***. I just woke up to this news. I mean my initial reaction is we did this because we have an average goalie that gets paid $10M a year. We sacrificed some good players to continue to pay that guy.

I believed in selling high on huberdeau but weegar could’ve been like a good #3-4 defenseman for us.

Weegar is never just going to sign for #3-4D money though.

Drop Horqnvist and this trade will be

Tkachuk+ Klingberg for rental Hubs+ Weegar

Wow. Zito has balls. At first I didn't like it, but Tkachuk is 5 years younger, and signed, that extends our window by a few years. That's why I dont mind giving up the pick either.

The thing is, idk how we are gonna ice a competent D this season. Zito MUST have another trade up his sleeve. Schwindt was one of the last prospects I had wanted to give up, too. But it's still a solid trade

Yep, all your core forwards now will be between 21-27y next season with both Barkov& Tkachuk locked up for 8 years.

They can load up the bottom6 next offseason if they want again

This plan needs to right now have Klingberg in it

Klingberg is gonna get 7+, I don't see it. And we don't have the picks to dump Horny, especially now. It's gonna have to be a trade, but not one involving Horny.

It is the right thing to do. Tkachuk is younger and suited for the playoffs. Bolts probably know we did this move because of them..

Remember the Callahan for St. Louis trade worked quite well.

Huberdeau is very good but when teams start to lock us down I gladly take Tkachuk who is younger and annoying as f***

The thing with a pick in 4 years is bob and all the other bad cap will be off the books.. and who else is there to sign? The team will be really in its prime then

True, I'm scared of us being bad around 2030, and with Barky, Ek, Chucky, Lundell, Knight, Fors all hopefully still around, we won't be bad enough to get top 3 picks. But if we win a Cup, I won't care I guess.

Flames fan here. I know there’s a good chunk of Panthers fans that are upset with the trade but I’m sure y’all will grow to love Chucky in time. He’s more than just antics and getting under people’s skin.

He’s consistently described as a “hockey-unicorn” meaning he brings a lot of different things to the table.

He’s very good around the net, has slick hands and has top tier hand-eye coordination. He’s an underrated passer as well.

His biggest weakness is his skating but adding one of the best power forwards in the leauge who’s still young and entering his prime is always a good thing.

Wish him the best of luck in Florida. Good luck to your guy’s team. I was cheering for y’all to beat the Lightning in the playoffs

Safe to say Zito had little faith in contract negotiations with these two.

Huberdeau will want 8x10+ as a 30 year old.

Weegar will want 7-9M with term as a 29 year old.

We absolutely gave up a lot. but we got cost controlled 80-100 point player who is 24-ish.

We traded two near-30 year old UFAs coming off career years for a 24 year old who just put up 100 points.
Yes we paid a lot.

This is how you extend a contention window.
Yea and TKachuk just came off career year too

Who do the Panthers replace Weegar with? Klingberg?
With what money???

Good deal. I'll take an overpay to get MT instead losing Huberdeau and Weegar to FA or overpay to keep

The only thing that was risky was Matt's deal. Top dollar and term. But hey, I can't hate the actual trade. Blueline looks a little weaker and now they got to bubble wrap Ekblads legs

Really stings to lose Huberdeau... but I think this shows a lot of guts and foresight on Zito's end. Huberdeaus 8 year contract would just be getting worse and worse as he ages and his game declines. Reasonable to think Tkachuk is on the upswing and we get out of his contract "early" when hes only 32. It's just smart.

The weegar+ 1st + schwindt aspect to balance the deal is probably overboard, but then again Calgary takes on huge risk with Weegar and Huberdeau possibly (probably imo) not re-signing. In the end they may net schwindt and a 1st for tkchuck which is terrible for them.

Tkachuk-Barkov-Reinhart
Verhaeghe-Lundell-Duclair/Luostarinen
Balcers-Bennett-White
Lomberg-Cousins-Hornqvist

Barkov needed a guy like tkachuk on his line and tkachuk needs a guy who can get him the puck like gaudreau did. Verhaeghe and Duclair are used to playing with each other, just will play with Barkov-lite now. Bennett and Balcers should be a nice combo on that checking line and that 4th will give everyone headaches. Just my own ideas, may look completely different. But I’d definitely keep tkachuk and Barkov together even though Verhaeghe looks best when he’s with Barkov (maybe move to RW)
Bottom 6 is worrisome and so is defense

Hörnqvist would be useful for Seattle because it's a new team that needs to build chemistry. Veteran players help in that. However, he earns too much. Not useful for some teams that have cap space and no cap space where he would be needed.

Zito must have a plan because he was willing to trade Hubie's relatively modest cap hit away. Panthers need to get rid of Horny or Bob.

Nah, I made it happen. You just have to trust your gut instinct and stay the course.

Haha Zitos got a couple girlfriends?
Did you throw a party last night?

Need some help on defense now though.

You thinking Huby goes home to Habs in a year? or you never want to think about him again?
I don't like Schwindt and 1st being added, feel one of those could have be kept but I like that we got meaner and MT's deal buys all his prime years.

It’s only 3-0 who cares
I’ve had some time to process this, and all I can say is you know what, props to Zito. This man has balls I’ll give him that. Tallon would’ve signed both Huberdeau and Weegar to combined 20 years for 20 million. Zito ain’t afraid to make shit happen and part ways and try new things. Gotta respect that. In that sense this is such a breathe of fresh air.

With that said, man I’m gonna miss Huby, thank you for everything.
