Whatever. I am sorry that the only way you can make the player you are trying to fluff up look good is to ensure that he is older than everyone he is compared with.

I'm arguing the general principle. I dont care about your born again fervor after having seen the light about Liljegrens badness. I dont care about how other random 2017 drafted players are doing. I do care what Liljegren has done as a u19 and u20 relative to the historical cohort, what it suggests about what he'll do as a u21 relative to that cohort, and what that says about him as a player.

Your cherry picked example of Vince Dunn was in his 21 year old season when putting up 45 points over a full AHL season, with a full season of top unit PP time to boot. That was his first season after his final year of WJC eligibility.

That is this upcoming season for Liljegren. If given the same amount of powerplay time, chances are Liljegren would surprise you with his AHL totals this upcoming year as well.

Lol it wasnt my example.

I hope Lily gets every opportunity to prove himself for that bottom pairing. It's gonna be interesting though since he will be up against tough competition. I'd give Sandin top pairing minutes all year with the marlies and see where he stands after that.

We have enough depth on D without rostering Lily as or 6th-7th D to start the season.

Give him top pairing minutes with the Marlies and allow us to keep a different D.
Better asset management sending Lily down and not exposing the depth D of choice to be #7.

we'll need him next year for sure

let him season in the A this year and we'll be better off in 2020

Then vs now ... I think the kid is ready for a major role right now

He can PK, he can skate, he can definitely handle sheltered 3rd pairing usage.

Rookie mistakes will happen but I think he's ready, him AND Sandin

After the slow start, Lilly looked solid and as steady as he did with the Marlies in the 2nd half last season. When he and Sandin got paired, they were really good together. Breakout of the zone will just happen with these two.
After this game, I don't think any of them hurt their chances of making the team.

Strong guy who can skate, but also move the puck. I will take that every time.
I didn't think I would have ever said his defensive game would be a strong point for him.
Babcock isn't likely to use 2 kids in Sandin and Lilly on the 3rd pair though, so only one of them at most makes the team, and if it's Sandin, that would be good actually. Lilly can then try to take a step offensively in the AHL.
Defensively, the kid is NHL ready.

I'd agree with this Stickty

I think Liljegren is the superior defensive player (I thought he showed that tonight) out of the two kids but Sandin is head and shoulders ahead offensively

If Sandin sticks and Liljegren goes back to the Marlies he'd be in line for first unit PP time, I don't think he's ever going to be a high end offensive player but there's definitely more to give in that regard imo

I'd go Sandin Schmaltz as the bottom pair as of now, bloody early to make that call though I'll admit and I'll probably change my mind after the next game

Rielly Ceci
Muzzin Barrie
Sandin Schmaltz
Marincin (plays both sides)

I'd rather keep the superior DEFENSIVE player up and leave the other to master that aspect. Unless I've been missing what our strengths and weaknesses are?

Leafs are forward heavy. They will once again go with 4 F - 1 D pp. Reilly and Barrie will be the PP D. No room for Sandin. Send them both back so that they are ready for next season, when they'll be needed.
The thing is that Liljegrens contract starts this year. If he looks ready you might as well give him the bottom pair role and see how he develops (kind of how we sheltered Mo).

No sense in wasting a year if he's going to play the same role as last year with the Marlies.

Sandins contract can slide another year so let him go down, take the Liljegren responsibility this year and see if we can develop guys like Hollowell/Duszak/Lindgren

I'm desperate for Liljeren in the NHL. He's definitely ready in my books, and I believe if he starts out of camp, he'll bump ceci to the 3rd pair by the all-star game.

Sandin goes down, dominates the AHL, and comes in next year.

Some of you are saying send BOTH Sandin and Lilijegren down.

While I do agree it doesn't hurt for more development in the AHL, here's a few points to consider:

1) Lilijegren's ELC kicks in this year. So whether or not we keep/send him down, we're still using a year out of that contract.
2) This year is the perfect year to shelter our rookies. With a stacked top-4 of Rielly/Muzzin/Barrie/Dermott and guys like Ceci there, we can easily give our rookies easier minutes. Next year, we want the rookies to be able to make the next-step and take more responsibilities. We want to be prepared for one or both of Muzzin and Barrie leaving (along with Ceci).

2019-2020:
Scenario 1:
Rielly - Ceci
Muzzin - Barrie
Dermott - Lilijegren

OR

Scenario 2:
Rielly - Dermott*
Muzzin - Barrie
Sandin - Ceci

2020-2021
(I.e Scenario 1 - losing Barrie):
Rielly - Dermott*
Muzzin - Lilijegren
Sandin - Ceci/Schmaltz

(I.e Scenario 2 - losing Muzzin):
Rielly - Dermott*
Sandin - Barrie
xxx - Lilijegren

Lily and Sandin both looked fine last night but imho Kivihalme was more noticeable. I’m kind of hoping that Harpur has more game though, it would be nice to have someone who can stick up for teammates, aggressively.

Right now I’d say that kivihalme has the inside track as the third pairing LD. The guy is a superb skater and puck mover. He basically replaces Gardiner for a fraction of the cost. Hopefully with fewer brain cramps.

Sandin will likely be here next year. He could use another year to work on his strength and defense.

It’s between Liljegren and Schmaltz for the third pairing RD spot.

I thought Sandin was noticeable in the offensive zone but there was a few times where he looked panicked in the D zone and also got knocked down a few times. I would keep him down for one more year and let him dominate.

Liljegren I thought was excellent last night. Was solid on his skates, never buckled under pressure, made good passes and was solid defensively. I think he is ready and I think the 3rd pairing RD spot is his to lose imo.

Liljegren had a good first game, he is getting better, need to see him later on in camp against NHL players
