The imlach reign of terror and the Ballard years did lots and it was generally known as not a hospitable spot

"Despite this financial success, the succeeding decades would see Ballard transform the Leafs from league leaders to league laughingstocks."

No player wanted to come to a team where the owner, coach, GM would throw them under the bus and undermine any attempt they had to win.

I didn't think this was hidden knowledge

With the exception of Frank Mahovlich, I also hated them being Leafs.

I mean even Gio at $1 million is really good :dunno:

As long as people remember Gio is turning 39 soon and will be playing thru to age 40.

98% of the players in the league don't make it, and still playing at age 40, and player decline the main reason. Remember Spezza just called it quits at age 38.

Safe to say this is a very short-term move and a player at the end of his career.

Gio will already be among the 5 or so oldest skaters in the league, depending on a few UFA unsigned players at present that might hang them up,

Leafs are likely hoping he can have development impact on younger players like Liljegren and Sandin similar to when Hainsey was brought in previously.

Sorry, I thought you meant more present day. I agree no one wanted to play for Ballard.

Here comes the usual Lily slander on Overdrive.

I seriously don't know why they hate him so much. I still think he's got very high potential!

It was more recent too. I recall guys like Nolan not wanting to come here and showing up like a whale not a shark. I also recall having to overpay to get players here and then they wanted out. So I was meaning more recent years too

Have to say I don't recall anything like that but I may have forgotten.
Nolan was great until he got hurt and even that was what, 20 years ago?

We're comparing a rookie defensemen to an at the time 550 games played and 28 years old defensemen. Give it a minute.
You started with the comparison. All I mentioned was Sandin's speed is a problem for him and the Leafs and I have not even started with his size and how he often got manhandled in front of the net.

Are you really surprised? I used to think Hayes was the smartest of the three. Now I think it might be Noodles.
For some reason, they really don't like Lilly. I don't understand that one bit.

I can't believe Overdrive actually has some defenders. They showed again why they are 3 clowns who think they know hockey when really they are completely out of touch. Jeff said yeah he made strides but he's not an every day guy so I don't get it. Such an ignorant response.
Hayes whose Liljegren narrative has blown up in his face countless times is in defensive mode said, how can you watch these playoffs and think Liljegren is important? Yeah Bryan, all Avs and Tampa had were slow big Roman Polaks right? Noodles and his jealous Oilers fan opinion was laughing at Liljegren for saying I didn't watch the finals. Hey Jamie, you think the best player of your favorite team in McDavid watched these finals? Not a chance.

Liljegren compares with Travis Dermott in terms of where they were coming out of ELC than any Gardiner comparison. The hope here is he keeps progressing and out performs the $1.4 million at some point during the contract as he keeps improving. Not like Dermott who just flatlined.

They basically hitched their ride to a lazy Liljegren narrative and can’t come around on it.

I brought up Gardiner because he's a great skater but routinely got beat by 4th liners to the outside. I said that because getting beat to the outside isn't a skating issue, it's a hockey IQ issue which isn't a weakness for Sandin.

It's a good deal. But I wouldn't consider him a top 4 player just yet.
If you don't now, you will by the end of next year.

To be fair, I'd hate playing in a place where not playing up to fan expectations meant that you got harrassed. Of course, part of this list could also be the start of "the worst players to ever play for Toronto" list...

And we all know why Healy hates the Leafs; he can claim it was "lack of respect" all he wants, but the truth is he thought he should be handed the GM job in 2008 with no prior experience just because, and he's hated the Leafs for refusing ever since.

Nolan's departure from Toronto was most definitely NOT on friendly terms...

20 years... Maybe I'm out of touch hahaha
Maybe I am trapped in the past but until dubas I don't recall a single vet playing here and taking a solid haircut in salary. Do you?
